MAC/Rodarte Makeup Collaboration Names Nail Polish After Impoverished, Murdered Women

My favorite makeup brand, MAC, has teamed up with Rodarte designers for a September 2010 collaboration based on their fall collection— but it’s gone horribly wrong. Drawing inspiration from the colors and culture of Mexico, MAC/Rodarte features a pink powder blush called Quinceanera, a sheer white lipstick called Ghost Town, and other items. That’s fine and dandy. But they’ve also tastelessly named their nail polishes Juarez (a pink frost) and Factory (a mint frost). Why’s it tasteless? Juarez is an impoverished Mexican factory town notorious for the number of women between the ages of 12 and 22 who have been raped and murdered with little or no response from police. Keep reading »

If you’re a true Apple fan, you have already signed up with Cupidtino and placed your pre-order for the iPhone 4.0, so here’s a new product to satisfy your Steve Jobs hunger. Nicola Harper from Geekware channeled her Mac addiction into a jewelry fetish and found a way to re-use old computer parts. With two on/off buttons, she created a set of MacBook Power Button Earrings and transformed two command buttons into a set of Apple MacBook Cufflinks. As with everything Apple-related, the items are a bit overpriced, retailing for $29.95 and $49.95, respectively. But for those who shell out upwards of $499 for an iPad, this is spare change, right? These days, everyone has a collaboration. So now it’s Alice + Olivia designer Stacey Bendet Eisner’s turn to get into the collab game, as she’s decided to bring her aesthetics to the world of cosmetics. Stacey teamed up with MAC to create a full line of beauty products including nail polish, lip gloss, and pigments. If you’re a fan of bright colors and unafraid to show your love for bold hues, then this is a collaboration you’ll love. Purples, pinks, turquoise, and yellows dominate the color scheme, promising that you’ll most certainly be noticed while wearing Alice + Olivia designs. Sold? I Love Lipstick

Truth to tell, that lipstick survey — the one that says lipstick is, well, over — has been bumming me out. I love the stuff. But this wasn’t always the case. When I was a little girl in the ’80s watching my mother slather bright pinks across her cheeks and perky blues over her lids, I hassled her. “Moo-o-o-oom,” I’d whine, “I like your face the way it is.” But she didn’t leave the house without putting her face on first. I carried my staunch anti-makeup stance almost entirely through high school, only breaking down occasionally for a little goth-inspired black eyeliner and mascara. Makeup was part of “The Man.” It was the enemy, keeping women down and stuff, by convincing them they’d never be good or pretty enough without another bottle of goopy stuff.

Liberty Of London, The Makeup Version?

Everyone’s currently obsessing over Target’s Liberty of London collection, so it was awfully clever of MAC to launch their new Give Me Liberty of London makeup collection yesterday (a few days before Target’s March 14th launch–zing!). Inspired by London’s Carnaby Street, “the unstudied, Sienna Miller style of Spitalfields Market to the grit and glamour of Portobello Road,” and “the swinging London girl,” the collection features candy-colored eye shadows, white and cornflower blue Nail Lacquer (the latter of which is sold out already–what gives!?), all manner of spring pink lippies and gorgeous floral makeup bags plus a limited-edition scarf. Pro Trick To Get Lips Their Darkest Aubergine

Besides all the signature zigzag prints and tribal silhouettes, the real star of Missoni‘s Fall 2010 show was (for me anyway), the deep, dark eggplant-hued lips the models sported in what MAC makeup artist Lucia Peroni called “A little bit Scottish, a little Masai, a little punk.” Sounds good to me. I’m a little obsessed because I’ve always been drawn to lip shades in blackberries and deep plums–must be my junior high goth roots–but Lucia’s mix is ultra arresting and looks really unique. To get the look she used MAC Eye Pencil in Ebony, mixed Lipsticks in Cyber and Hang-Up and blended them into the lips with a brush, then applied Matte on top to get rid of any and all shine. How ’bout that! Black eye liner to get your darkest plum! Love it. Will I be wearing this look to work Monday? Not bloody likely, but I may do some experimenting this weekend. Keep reading »
