Lauryn Hill Releases New Song, “Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)”

Listen Up!

It’s crazy to think about, but this coming August will mark 15 years since the incredible album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was released. Since then, the former Fugee has not released another studio album, instead busying herself by having kids (six in total, five with Bob Marley’s son Rohan), practicing her faith with the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, pissing off the Vatican, and not paying her taxes. While she’s done a little bit of performing over the years — touring with Nas, an appearance at Coachella in 2011 — and a couple of new songs have been leaked, the clamor for a new Lauryn Hill album has seemingly fallen on deaf ears. Until now! Keep reading »

Lauryn Hill Says Her Newborn Son Isn’t Rohan Marley’s

“Mr. Marley and I have a long and complex history about which MANY inaccuracies have been reported since the beginning. Contrary to the numerous reports, Mr. Marley did not abandon me while pregnant with his child. We have had long periods of separation over the years but our five children together remain a joy to both of us. Thank you for your concern and I appreciate all of the well wishes regarding the birth of my new son.”

Lauryn Hill could be talking to us in this message she posted on her website, regarding the birth of her son this week and the rumors that Rohan Marley left her while she was pregnant. Apparently, they parted before the pregnancy? Sorry we got it wrong, Lauryn. We hope you and your babY are doing very well. And we hope you give birth to a new album soon, too! Lauryn Hill’s Daughter Selah Marley Is A Model

Selah Marley, the daughter of Lauryn Hill and Rohan Marley, has already graced the pages of Teen Vogue, and now new modeling pics of the gorgeous 12-year-old have surfaced. Knowing a bit about how jaded Lauryn became with the music industry and fans after the release of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, I’m surprised she’s allowed Selah to plunge into the modeling world at such a young age. But if Willow and Jaden Smith have taught us anything, it’s that kids of famous parents have to work, too. Check out more photos of Selah here. Keep reading »

Lauryn Hill To Tour

I know what I want for Christmas—tickets to see Lauryn Hill in concert! I loved her in The Fugees and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill remains one of my favorite albums of all time. But after that, she totally dropped off the pop culture radar, went into a self-imposed seclusion, and had lots of babies with Rohan Marley. Now Lauryn is back and has just announced a tour of small venues. Woo hoo! Hope I can snag tix to one of her New York shows. [EW] Keep reading »

Lauryn Hill Is Really Vague About New Album And Today’s Artists

Lauryn Hill sat down with MTV after performing during last weekend’s Rock the Bells concert in NYC. L-Boogie says she’s “getting closer” to releasing a new album. Just how “close” she is we won’t really know until the Tuesday when the album is actually released. Well, that’s the impression I got from Lauryn, who was seriously vague about her comeback and the state of today’s artists. And to think I used to hang on this woman’s every word … now, I only vaguely know what she’s actually talking about. But I ain’t mad at her because I, along with many other fans, put a lot of pressure on her. No wonder she’s more reserved now. [MTV] Keep reading »

Quotable: Lauryn Hill Explains Why She Left Us And If She’ll Be Back

“There were a number of different reasons. But partly, the support system that I needed was not necessarily in place. There were things about myself, personal-growth things, that I had to go through in order to feel like it was worth it. In fact, as musicians and artists, it’s important we have an environment — and I guess when I say environment, I really mean the [music] industry, that really nurtures these gifts. Oftentimes, the machine can overlook the need to take care of the people who produce the sounds that have a lot to do with the health and well-being of society, or at least some aspect of society. And it’s important that people be given the time that they need to go through, to grow, so that the consciousness level of the general public is properly affected. Oftentimes, I think people are forced to make decisions prematurely. And then that sound radiates … I have five children. The youngest is 2 now, so she’s old enough that I can leave her for a period of time and know she’s going to be OK. That’s one reason. And I think it’s just time. I’m starting to get excited again. Believe it or not, I think what people are attracted to about me, if anything, is my passion. People got exposed to my passion through music and song first. I think people might realize, you know, ‘We love the way she sounds, we love the music, but I think we just love how fearless she is. How boundless she is, when it comes to what she wants to do.’ And I think that can be infectious.”

Lauryn Hill gave a rare interview to NPR, in which she speaks candidly about the business reasons that led to her music hiatus, but she makes no reference to the personal aspects (ahem, Rohan Marley) that she alluded to during her MTV Unplugged special. Either way, I’m happy Ms. Hill, as she wants people to call her, is back onstage, even if I can’t see her at this summer’s Rock the Bells festival. [NPR] Keep reading »
