Side-Eye: Chanel Runway Show Concludes With Second Wave “Feminist Protest”

Side-Eye: Chanel Runway Show Concludes With Second Wave "Feminist Protest"

This is why people think fashion is stupid. Because designers like Karl Lagerfeld, who seriously could give two shits about women’s rights, co-opts the feminist movement as some sort of aesthetic inspiration for his fashion mood board and then parades an array of mostly white, skinny models down the runway holding ridiculous signs like “Free Freedom,” “We Can Match The Machos,” “Be Your Own Stylist,” “Boys Should Get Pregnant Too” and “Tweed Is Better Than Tweet.” I get the tenuous connection between the designs for his Spring 2015 collection, which was basically his take on fashion for working women, and the second wave feminist movement, I GUESS, but come on. This is so dumb it hurts my eyes to look at.

Chanel Uses Native American Headdresses In Dallas Fashion Show, Kind Of Apologizes

It seems like these days, it’s not a fashion show unless someone appropriates someone else’s culture and causes a PR fracas. Today’s guilty party: Chanel, whose Metiers d’Art show staged last week in Dallas showcased several models in Native American headdresses and clothes. According to New York magazine’s blog The Cut, the feathers sticking out of the models’ hair were imprinted with Chanel’s double Cs and they wore makeup in their cheeks to emulate Native American war paint. Well Played: Jessica Biel Wears Chanel Like A Champ

Jessica Biel in Chanel

I’m really feeling the love for Jessica Biel today, probably because I watched her 1998 classic “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” (also starring Jonathan Taylor Thomas!!!) over the weekend. What a film! So while I’m aboard the Biel train, I figure I better congratulate her on the extraordinarily well-played look she wore the Museum of Modern Art’s annual Film Benefit. This white Chanel frock, if pretty, is unremarkable on its own, but the bronze shoulder chains and unexpected burgundy [Wait, are they burgundy or bronze? -- Amelia] pumps take it above and beyond. Turquoise eyeliner keeps the whole thing playful, and her hair, as always, is something I would like very much to pet. Well done!

If only...

Say what you will about (kooky/krazy/kreepy) Karl Lagerfeld, but when it comes to his creative directorial role at Chanel, the man is aces. Filmmaker Trevor Undi took Karl’s vision and interpreted it into this hypnotic 2 and a half-minute video comprised of clips from the French fashion house’s Paris-Édimbourg Métiers d’Art 2012/13 runway show, which took place in a castle in the Scottish highlands. Never before have runway-side iPhone photographers looked so, well, otherworldly. [Vimeo]

Oh, Karl!

Karl Lagerfeld isn’t the most politically correct fellow around, nor is he necessarily the most reasonable, but he is delightful in the way that many kooky, mildly racist old European men just are. He has terrible things to say about almost everyone, but he says them so straight-forwardly and in such bastardized English that it’s next to impossible not to chuckle — he’s just kind of hilarious in the most inadvertent way. “I am not that pretentious; you have a distorted image of me,” Karl tells Harper’s Bazaar‘s executive editor, the fabulous Laura Brown, in this installment of “The Comedown,” her webseries for the mag. They chat about everything from Choupette (who, yes, Karl realizes is “the most beautiful and most famous cat in the world”) to what he would do if he was invisible for a day (robbery). You may want to skip this video if you’re firmly anti-Karl, because there’s a considerable chance you might actually start to find the man wildly endearing, warts and all. [Fashionista]

Karl Lagerfeld is one kooky old bigot (whom I happen to find quite endearing, though others may not agree and despite the fact that I am most definitely too fat for his tastes anyway), but he is now responsible for one of the best moves ever made in the history of celebrities-as-fashion faces. It involves Chanel. Also, Tilda Swinton. Tilda Swinton! That’s right: Karl has tapped Tilda to front the ad campaign for his most recent couture collection. The collection was shown in an old castle in Scotland, Tilda is Scottish; it all makes perfect Chanel sense! This is the first time representing a major luxury brand for Tilda, which, how is that even possible given that she is tall, pale, willowy, crazy-cheekboned, ridiculously elegant Bowie-alike perfection? A mystery. Not that I’m complaining, because Tilda plus Chanel equals unnggghghghgjdghdf. It’s going to be so good. That’s the first image from the campaign, above. Very Narnia indeed. [The Cut]
