Is It OK To Write About An Ex For Revenge, A La “(500) Days Of Summer”?

From the beginning, screenwriter Scott Neustadter said “(500) Days of Summer” was not a love story. To celebrate the movie’s opening in the UK, Scott penned an article this week for the Daily Mail titled, “Revenge is Writing a Film About the Girl Who Dumped You.” In it, he dishes about his failed relationship with Jenny Beckman. Remember the disclaimer in the opening credits? “Any resemblance to people living or dead is purely coincidental. Especially you, Jenny Beckman. Bitch.” Scott is still pleading the fifth about whether or not his ex’s real name is Jenny Beckman. I hope for her sake, it’s not.

But something in his essay really struck me. He says that writing the movie, a thinly veiled account of his doomed relationship with Jenny, actually felt good.

The “(500) Days Of Summer” Reunion Bank Dance

I’m off next week for a much needed vacation—Costa Rica! Surfing! Yoga! Beer!—leaving The Frisky in the very capable hands of your regular bloggers. Consider this video my parting gift. There’s a dance sequence in ”(500) Days Of Summer,” in which Joseph Gordon-Levitt is so high on life that he dances through the streets of L.A., but Zooey Deschanel‘s own sweet moves were absent. On his website, hitRECord.org, Joe posted this video and wrote:

I mean, it really felt a bit wrong—Zooey’s born for musical numbers, and the one day she wasn’t on set, we go and shoot a musical number? The wrong had to be righted. So when it came time to start promoting the movie, we had the idea to kill two birds with one stone…. It’s a work of art in its own right. And to me, it seems like so much more effective an endorsement of the movie than any interview or fashion shoot…. Plus it was about as purely fun a day on a set as I’ve ever had. Hope you like it!

I like it so much, I am overlooking the fact that JGL still hasn’t responded to my Twitter date invite.

We See Chick Flicks: “(500) Days Of Summer”

(500) Days Of Summer Review

Starring Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Full disclosure. I knew I was going to be in love with this movie before I even saw it. Typically, this kind of over-hyping would cause me to end up being disappointed—“Marie Antoinette” directed by Sofia Coppola suffered this fate—but not so. I laughed, I cried, and Ryan Gosling, poor thing, has been usurped by the wonderfulness that is Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I know, I can’t believe it either.

Trailer Park: “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” And “(500) Days of Summer”

A Peak At This Week's Movie Releases

There’s really no sense in trying to goad you into going to the movie theater this week, because you already know what’s there. In fact, you’ve been waiting in anticipation for months, crossing the days off calendars. It’s epic. Not only is “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” out now (approximately eight months late), but “500 Days of Summer,” which seemingly took 500 days to arrive in theaters, is out, too. If you’re not already waiting in line, you’re too late. Get ‘er done.

“(500) Days Of Summer” Plus Five Other Indie Chick Flicks

I’ve been waiting for this day for months. ”(500) Days Of Summer,” which is guaranteed to be my new most favorite movie, is in theaters today! Sadly, however, I’m under the weather and likely won’t be getting off my couch to go see it tonight, as planned. Sniff. But the film, starring eternally adorable Zooey Deschanel and uber hottie Joseph Gordon Levitt, is hardly the first indie chick flick. After the jump, five you may have missed that don’t star Sandra, Reese, or Katherine. I know what I’m renting from Blockbuster tonight!

We’re Dying To See “500 Days Of Summer”

Hi, guys. So, this is my favorite movie: “500 Days Of Summer.” I haven’t actually seen it yet, but the trailer is above, and honestly if it doesn’t turn out to be my favorite movie, I will be super surprised. Also, can I please walk into an elevator and meet someone like Joseph Gordon Levitt, please? Thanks.
