10 Reasons We Love…Cloris Leachman

1. She’s the oldest contestant ever on “Dancing With The Stars” and freaking KILLED IT in her first performance last night.
2. She’s a longtime vegetarian. I eat meat (Catherine is a veg, though) but I think it’s kind of awesome that Cloris has been off the animal flesh since before it was cool.
3. Cloris attempted to keep one of our favorite shows of the 1980s alive, by appearing as the replacement den mother on “The Facts Of Life”, after Charlotte Rae’s character, Mrs. Garrett, left the show.

5 Reasons We Love…Rachel Maddow

1. Maddow consistently holds her own with loud mouths like Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews as a regular panelist on MSNBC. She’s so impressive that she scored a hosting gig for her own news show, The Rachel Maddow Show, starting tonight at 9pm on MSNBC.

2. Despite reports, she refused to be “prettied up” for her new show. And thank goodness – like we need another fembot anchor with too much eyeliner and teased hair.

5 Reasons We Love…Skins

  1. The show is about a bunch of teenagers who live in Bristol, England, so they use all sorts of awesome slang, i.e., “spliff” means marijuana.
  2. Skins has its own Twitter, and if you follow it, you’ll learn a new British word every day.
  3. Each episode focuses on one character’s perspective, so you see Cassie battling an eating disorder, Jal dealing with a famous father, and Tony trying to pick up private school girls by joining a choir — stuff that wouldn’t really get touched on if the show just focused on the group as a whole. And the characters are so different you’ll fall in love with at least one of them (we heart Cassie).
  4. BBC America airs episodes Sundays at 9 and 10 p.m. but replays them Mondays at 12, 1, 3, and 4 a.m., so if you’re an insomniac, you’ll have something to watch besides infomercials at least one day a week.
  5. The actors actually look like they’re 17 years old and in high school, unlike Naomi on the new 90210, who looks about 30.

5 Reasons We Love…Margaret Cho

In honor of the recent premiere of Margaret Cho’s hysterical new show, “The Cho Show”, (quite a mouthful right there!) we’ve decided to compile a little list of why we love this comedian. And check out a clip from her show, after the jump.

1. Cho started performing stand-up at age 16 and shortly after was chosen to open for Jerry Seinfeld. Jerry frickin’ Seinfeld.
2. No one will ever imitate their parents with as much accuracy and hilarity.
3. She’s got a bad ass array of colorful body art.

5 Reasons We Love…Simon Rich

  1. He published his first book, Ant Farm, while still in college. And it was actually funny. So funny that we’re not jealous of him (even though he got a book deal when he was 22).
  2. He became a writer for Saturday Night Live right after graduating from Harvard in 2007 and still we’re not envious.
  3. He’s one of three finalists for the 2008 Thurber Prize for American Humor, our country’s “highest recognition of the art of humor writing,” according to the award’s website.
  4. He looks young for his age, and so do we. It’s hard being in your 20s and being mistaken for a 16 year old. Simon, we feel for ya.
  5. We laughed out loud on the subway while reading his new collection of hilarious made-up conversations, like this one, which takes place between two frogs who have just figured out where all of their friends and relatives go: middle school science classes to be dissected. The book, titled Free-Range Chickens, comes out today.

5 Reasons We Love…Passion Pit

  1. Frontman Michael Angelakos took the band’s name from a slang term for drive-ins where teens ignored the screen in favor of other, um, activities.
  2. Their Chunk of Change EP was originally created as a belated Valentine’s Day present for Angelakos’s girlfriend.
  3. They’ve opened for Death Cab for Cutie and Girl Talk, two of our faves.
  4. The five guys who make up the band are super cute and nerdy looking. (We’re crushing on the three in glasses.)
  5. We listened to “Sleepyhead” 25 times in a row the other day (seriously) and still want to jump up and down every time we hear it.

Download “Sleepyhead” for free at Music.Download.com. The Chunk of Change EP will be released September 16. Keep reading »
