The “Cathy” Comic Strip Was “Sex & The City,” “Bridget Jones,” And “30 Rock” Before Their Time

By now you’ve probably read a news article with the lede: “Ack! The ‘Cathy’ comic strip is ending!” Yes, it’s true. Cartoonist Cathy Guisewite, 60, announced yesterday that she will retire the 34-year-old comic strip in October for the usual reasons: to spend more time with her family and pursue other creative projects.

It’s as good a time as any to put the old girl down. After decades as a swinging desperate single gal, the Cathy character married her cartoon beau, Irving, in 2005. Cathy’s other trials and tribulations — fending off both unwanted pounds and unwanted mothering — are neuroses she’ll apparently never get over.

As stereotypical as the “Cathy” comic strip (which I’ll admit I haven’t read regularly since high school) was regarding single ladies, I’m not about to say “Good riddance!” Yes, she was obsessed with finding a husband. Yes, she was obsessed with her scale. I’ll just say it: she was annoying. But “Cathy” was also pretty groundbreaking. Keep reading »

Porn Star Savanna Samson To Play Liz Lemon On “30 Rock”

We’ve already told you about the “30 Rock” porn spoof, but now the for-realz TV show on NBC has hired a porn star to play Liz Lemon. Wait, Tina Fey is leaving the show?! Hardly. Mega-famous adult film actress Savanna Samson will play the porn version of Liz in tonight’s episode, titled “Into the Crevasse.” According to Ace Showbiz, “the synopsis from this week’s episode does not indicate clearly any storyline concerning a Porn Liz. It says that Tracy and Jenna both have reason to be angry with Liz and are determined to make her life miserable. What You’ve Been Waiting For: A “30 Rock” Porn Spoof

And, no, it’s not called “30 C**k.” Porn company New Sensations — which produced porn spoofs based on hit shows like “The Office” and “Scrubs” — has released the XXX flick, featuring characters “Limon,” (based on Tina Fey’s “Liz Lemon”) “Trey Jordan,” (“Tracy Jordan”) and “Jake,” (“Jack Donaghy”). I’m pretty sure “Limon” is played by the same actress that portrayed “Sara Paylin” in “Nailin’ Paylin.” NYMag.com rightly points out that the skin flick does its parody well. “Someone out there in porn-making land has actually done their ’30 Rock’ homework — there’s even a TGS movie-parody-within-a-show-within-a-show-within-a-parody-porn scene. Tina Fey And “30 Rock” Get Rich(er)

Yay! Everyone’s favorite Palin-impersonating, geeky-smart, bespectacled, funny gal is about to get a whole lot richer. Emmy winner Tina Fey’s hilarious show, “30 Rock,” whose commercial success has only recently started to catch up to its critical acclaim has been sold for syndication — where the real money is. Comedy Central and WGN outbid E! and TBS for rights to pay Universal Media Studios a combined $800,000 per episode, to air the show five nights a week beginning in a little over two years. For a show that’s been on the brink of cancellation, despite its many awards and critical acclaim, this is an astounding victory. If NBC is successful in securing buys from local stations as it’s trying to do, Tina Fey is pretty much guaranteed the comfiest of retirements when she decides to take one. We just hope that doesn’t happen for a LONG time. A new episode of the show, we’d be happy to see sooner rather than later, though. [via Variety via Vulture] Keep reading »

    Liz Lemon Attempts To Use Her Feminine Wiles To Save Her Staff

    On last night’s episode of “30 Rock,” the company has to undergo some cuts, and Liz Lemon is told she has to pare away 25 percent of her budget. But she can’t find anything to get rid of (straw are not an unnecessary expense!). Liz tries to play by the rules, pleading her case to the consultant who is overseeing the budget cuts, but that doesn’t help. So, she decides to try to give the budget consultant “a taste of the Lemon” in exchange for her staff not getting fired. Things work out in the end, but not because she dons a slutty red ruched dress and hooker boots.
