  • In her upcoming interview with Oprah, Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas says she was “bullied” and “isolated” at her Virginia Beach gym for being black and was even called a “slave.” But her gym, Excalibur Gymnastics, denied the claims and called Gabby’s comments “hurtful” and “without merit.” Err, I think she would know what happened to her, guys. That's Some Olympic-Quality Interning!

“Colbert Report” host Stephen Colbert knows probably better than anyone that in order to succeed you have to work with the best. That’s why on his show Wednesday night he said goodbye to his latest crop of interns, and brought on a new, shall we say, more qualified set: the gold medal-winning women’s gymnastic team. That’s right: Gabby, McKayla, Kyla, Aly and Jordyn — along with Aly’s very excitable mom — all made an appearance. And they were tasked with the very important job of making sure Stephen had his pen. You know how Stephen can get about his pens. [Comedy Central]

The first thing you notice about gold medal winning Olympic rower Esther Lofgren is her smile. The next thing you notice is her height — at 6’2″ Esther towers over nearly everyone she meets, but she’s warm and will happily stoop to accomodate those around her. The Harvard grad took home the gold during the London Olympics with an impressive team performance in the women’s eight-person race.

We spoke to Esther while she was getting her nails done at the P&G Family Home salon about how she made it to the Olympics, what it’s like to work with all women, and how she keeps her skin looking so damn good.

Two women made history at the 2012 Olympics for being the first-ever female Saudi Arabians to compete in the Games.

But one of those young women, Wojdan Shakerkai, who competed in judo (and lost), has paid dearly for being a trailblazer: the 16-year-old girl has been lambasted as a “prostitute” by misogynists back home. Keep reading »

Annie Lennox totally killed it during last night’s Olympic closing ceremony. The singer, who got her start as one half of The Eurythmics, performed a rousing, pirate-y rendition of her hit “Little Bird,” which stood out against the four (four!) Jessie J performances and Fat Boy Slim’s faux DJ-ing. We were reminded of Annie’s super original look, especially her standout style during her early years with The Eurythmics, and decided to try and copy her boyish look. After the jump, we give you our best go at Annie’s signature “Sweet Dreams” style, softened just a touch.

Spice Up Your Life

Zig-A-Zig-Ah!

It finally happened: the Spice Girls reunited for Closing Ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics to sing a medley of “Wannabe” and “Spice Up Your Life” atop bling-covered black cabs. Everyone appears … well-preserved. Baby Spice Emma Bunton ditched the kinderwhore look of 1998 and looks decidedly more grown up in her hot pink dress. And it’s weird for me when Victoria Beckham doesn’t scowl. I hope that was worth the six months of being excited about it?!  [Vimeo]

“There Are No Feminists On My Team,” Says U.S. Women’s Basketball Coach

  • The U.S. women’s Olympic basketball team coach Geno Auriemma has said that “there are no feminists on my team … we’re not running around burning our bras trying to make people believe in our team.” I guess he is trying to say talent wins out above all?  But way to not understand feminism at all, dude. The reason the team you coach is allowed to play in the Olympics is because of women’s equality. [Blisstree]
  • …. nevertheless, NPR declares it the “Year Of The Woman” at the London Olympics. [NPR]
  • A woman who braids hair has won a federal lawsuit against the state of Utah over regulations that would have required her to get a cosmetology license. The state of Utah could not prove that hair braiders — who oftentimes are immigrant women for whom attaining a cosmetology license would be a struggle — were a threat to public health. “Broad-shouldered, flat-chested women with small hips; [they are] totally indistinguishable from men. Their breasts – the symbol of womanhood, motherhood – flattened into stubs as they were seen as mere hindrances to speed. I am not even talking about female javelin throwers, shot-put athletes, weightlifters, wrestlers and boxers. Their appearance is just pathetic.”

You know how sometimes crusty old dudes say laughably sexist things? Like, things you can’t even waste the energy getting offended about because they’re so preposterous? Meet Turkish columnist Yuksel Aytut, who wrote a column called “Womanhood Is Dying At The Olympics.” Yes, seriously. Womanhood is dying. All those female athletes are running, swimming and kicking soccer balls when they should be back at home rubbing their husband’s feet. Such a shame!

Oof. Obviously this man has not clicked through a slideshow of women’s beach volleyball butts. [WonketteDaily Mail UK]

The Spice Girls Are Back And They’re Straddling Bedazzled Cabs!

You guys, look, it’s actually happening! This right here is photographic proof that the Spice Girls are hard at work rehearsing for their triumphant reunion performance at the Olympics closing ceremonies on Sunday. Titled “A Symphony of British Music,” the show will also include Adele, Muse, and members of The Who, The Kinks, and Pink Floyd. All the other acts are fine and good, but I mean, really, does it get any more British than Posh, Ginger, Scary, Sporty, and Baby rolling into the stadium on bedazzled cabs, flanked by dapper men in suits? Cheers! [Buzzfeed]
