“I’m very country at heart. I have a real desire to be outdoors, a desire for simplicity — a slightly slower, relaxed approach to life. A community, not a big-city feel. That’s what I grew up with, and it’s what I prefer.”
–Nicole Kidman talks about her laid-back life in Nashville in this month’s InStyle cover story, and as a Music City resident, I enthusiastically co-sign her statements (for the record, I still haven’t run into her at Whole Foods, and I’m still really sad about it). She also confirmed widespread suspicions that her hubby, country star Keith Urban, is the most romantic man in the world: “For every single night he’s away, he leaves me a love letter,” she says. “Every single night of our relationship.” Damn, Keith, way to raise the bar for every other guy, especially the week of Valentine’s Day. “I was raised by a feminist mother. And yes, she said never be frightened about using the ‘F’ word. So I’m not. She believes in the sisterhood, and so do I. And she planted the seed in me early to speak out against the fact that women are so often treated differently than men. … No matter how long I devote my time to this I still cannot comprehend that one in three girls in their lifetime will be beaten, abused, or raped. It’s just an unbelievable statistic.”
Here’s Nicole Kidman speaking at Variety‘s Women and Power luncheon on Friday afternoon revealing she’s totally OK using the “F” word — feminist, that is. I never got a huge activist vibe from Nicole before, I suppose because she’s fairly private. But she has played writer Virginia Woolf and photographer Diane Arbus on film and both of those women are instrumental to women’s history. It’s important to have people in the streets fighting for women’s rights, it’s also important to bring complex, important female characters to life on film. Welcome to the club, Nicole! Princesses are so hot right now, what with their pretty hair and pretty clothes and … um …. that’s it. Unfortunately, Warner Brothers couldn’t think of much else to tease about Princess Grace — otherwise known as the actress Grace Kelly — in the trailer for their forthcoming biopic, “Grace Of Monaco.” Grace Kelly won an Academy Award in her early 20s and appeared in several of Alfred Hitchcock’s most famous films, including “Rear Window,” “Dial M For Murder” and “To Catch A Thief.” Yet after a brief courtship, she quit acting at age 26 to marry Prince Rainier III of Monaco (an elaborate celebration, called “the Wedding of the Century” of its time) and become a full-time princess and international style icon. She popped out three kids but saw her acting career wilt, as her husband and the people of Monaco didn’t would not support it. Maybe “Grace Of Monaco” will touch upon some of this, but in the trailer we only see Grace, played by Nicole Kidman, looking pretty here and looking pretty there. Here’s hoping the actual movie has some meat on its bones, like “The Iron Lady,” “My Week With Marilyn,” and “The Queen.” [YouTube]
I always feel a little let down when I see photos of Nicole Kidman at events and premieres overseas, because you guys have no idea how much time I spend hanging out at the Nashville Whole Foods’ salad bar hoping to “accidentally” run into her and Keith Urban. When I realize she’s been out of the country for the entire time I was pretending to carefully examine the cherry tomato selection, I feel a bit cheated, you know? But hey, she’s gotta pay the bills, and when her trips abroad provide fashion eye candy as gorgeous as this exquisitely beaded light blue dress she wore to a dinner in Berlin, I can almost forgive her for leaving me all alone at the salad bar. Almost. [Photo: Fame Flynet]

True, we haven’t actually seen Nicole Kidman’s face move in quite a few years. but perhaps that will help lend an air of regalness to her portrayal of Princess Grace Kelly. Kidman is starring as Grace in the new film “Grace of Monaco,” which chronicles Kelly’s life as a film actress, erstwhile monarch and muse. The film also stars Tim Roth, Parker Posey, and Milo Ventimiglia. We can’t wait. [FashionIndie]
Watching the Emmys this weekend, I was totally blown away by how amazing Julianna Margulies looked. “She hasn’t aged a day in 10 years!” I gasped, and then I saw Edie Falco, and thought the same thing, and then Nicole Kidman showed up, and I realized a photo slideshow was in order. Click through to check out side-by-side pics of 12 celebs who, through the magic of sunscreen or Botox or the blood of virgins, look exactly the same (or younger!) as they did a decade ago…
The comparisons were inevitable so is Katie Holmes’ decision to keep Suri Cruise out of Tom Cruise and Scientology’s clutches making Nicole Kidman look like an uncaring mother or was she just a victim of Tom’s overwhelming power?
You knew it was going to get back to Nicole somehow because she hasn’t talked about Katie and Tom’s divorce. I can understand why she wouldn’t but I can’t understand why she hasn’t be hounded by the press yet. Obviously it’s not in Nicole’s nature to talk. She’s barely said a word about her ten-year marriage to Cruise since their divorce eleven years ago. But that divorce was weird and got weirder as time went on. People whisper that Tom had something on Nicole which is why she was able to go free with joint custody but pretty much left the kids behind to be raised 100 percent by Tom and his Scientology minions. Both Tom and Nicole’s kids are true Scientologists in every sense of the word. Read more… Keep reading »
These two! They’re at Cannes (of course) at the premiere of “The Paperboy,” starring Kidman, McConaughey and a delicate little flower known as Zac Efron. I like to imagine they’re having an “attractive-off” and Kidman is chiding McConaughey for wearing a shirt. Or maybe she’s asking him why he left his bongos at home. What do you think?
