It’s obvious enough that “old-fashioned” guidebooks won’t help if you’re trying to pack light. No matter what your destination is, there are about a million travel iPhone apps out there for you to choose from, but we prefer Wallpaper’s City Guides. Why? For starters, we prefer to cut down on costs by not depleting our data allowance while abroad. These guides are all packed in there, so you don’t need a 3G network to access the info. And it’s only $3.99, which is less than you’d spend on any book.
One of life’s little pleasures: spritzing yourself with your perfume, the one that you’ve really adopted as your smell. The problem with this is that perfumes are generally expensive (unless you somehow enjoy dousing yourself in Eau de Britney each day). After wearing the relatively affordable Ralph by Ralph Lauren scent since my teenage years, I recently came across a fragrance I absolutely fell in love with—Byredo’s “Blanche.” But at $200 a bottle, it’s not something I’m going to drop down for. So instead, I’ve savored my itty bitty samples and feared the day of the last drop. My prayers, however, have been answered: The Perfumed Court is a service that decants scents and repackages them into 1-15 ml spray bottles and roll-ons. You’ll find top brands like Pucci, Chanel, and Jo Malone, along with lower-level names like Fresh or even … Paris Hilton. In case you just want to give that a try. [The Perfumed Court] Keep reading »
Over at Broadsheet, Tracy Clark-Flory shares the amazing work of artist Rachel Mahlke, who turns stripper shoes into … planters. Yep, you heard right. Mahlke removes the strap over the toe portion of a stripper shoe, drills holes in the platform for drainage, and plants it with cacti or succulents. “Each reclaimed stiletto planter, sold individually, costs in the ballpark of $55 to $80,” Creative Loafing reports. But why stiletto planters? The description for this one says it’s “a stark reminder of how hard it is to … well, to be a woman.” We’re not going to argue with that. [Broadsheet] Keep reading »
Sofia Coppola‘s new film, “Somewhere,” is set to debut at the Venice Film Festival next week (sorry if you weren’t invited—you’ll have to wait for the December release date). We’re itching to see it because, no matter the story line, Sofia’s work is usually a visual playground of nostalgic places, saccharine candy colors, and compelling landscapes. We’re surprised, however, to see a new example from her decidedly un-creative work with Louis Vuitton. Keep reading »
Indie fashion mag Love has just put out its fourth issue. We got a taste after seeing Gisele done up as a bombshell pin-up cover girl. But wait—that’s only the beginning. Looks like Love knows how to tease an audience, because we keep finding new covers for the same issue. We’ve counted eight cover girls, each categorized by type. There’s Gisele (the bombshell), Alessandra Ambrosio (the angel), Sienna Miller (the pin-up), Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (the siren), Lauren Hutton (the heroine), Agyness Deyn (the rebel), Kelly Brook (the sweetheart), and, um, a doll, Ms. Perfect (the mannequin). Are we missing any? Check out the rest after the jump! Keep reading »
