Poll: Can Women Wear Bow Ties?

For Christmas this year, one of my dream gifts was a plaid bow tie. Our Simcha was thoughtful enough to surprise me with one, and I have since spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out how to wear it without looking like a waitress at a Scottish restaurant. Do you think women can wear bow ties and look good doing so? Vote, then leave me some styling suggestion in the comments! [Weardrobe] Keep reading »

Crave: Madewell For Topshop Boilersuit

We just love jumpsuits, and since we bought three last summer we’re happy they’re still in style this year. This one from Madewell is perfect for us because we can show a lot of leg, but the girls remain covered. Plus the dark indigo shade gives it a cool ’70s vibe. Crave: Sterling Silver “Inspirational” Circle Necklace

This necklace is nothing like your typical inspirational necklace that focuses on boring old love, faith, and hope. Instead, it encourages you to lie, cheat, and steal, which is usually considered unladylike behavior. But these verbs can totally be inspirational when you think about them this way: lie about your age, cheat on your diet, and steal your friends’ style. [$14.99, Overstock.com] Keep reading »

Hair Colors Decoded

An easy ways to update your look is to change your hair color. But before you break out a bottle of peroxide, you should know that every hair color has a positive and negative perception. Before you send the wrong idea, find out what your hair color is saying about you.

Poll: Would You Wear This?

One of the beauty trends at New York Fashion Week was the reverse French manicure, where the moon, rather than the tip, is a different color from the rest of the nail. You might not remember this unless you’re a Batman nerd like me, but Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman) had nails like this in “Batman and Robin.” Anyway, would you paint your nails like this? Keep reading »

If James Bond Were A Woman, He Would Wear This Swimsuit

When I was really little, I had a pair of gloves that looked plain when you were inside, but when you went into the cold, a secret design revealed itself! Yeah, they were pretty sweet. Textile designer Yun Ding has taken my favorite pair of gloves and turned them into an awesome concept for a magical chameleon swimsuit. The suit would show a geometric print when dry, but under certain conditions — changes in temperature or moisture — the design would switch to a decorative pattern. Wearing one would make you the envy of everyone at the beach (“What does your suit do? Nothing? How sad.”), but you’ll also have the tools to escape any creeps who are trying to stalk you (“She was wearing a black and white striped suit when she went into the water, so that can’t be her in the patterned suit.”). The Wobble-Inducing Heels Of London Fashion Week

We just go from one city’s fashion week to another’s, and right now designers are showing their Fall 2009 clothes in London. Unlike New York Fashion Week, where the heels seemed lower than usual (except for at Herve Leger), the shoes of London are tall and predominantly platforms. So far, no model has totally bit it and landed on the runway, but there have been a few close calls: a trip at Vivienne Westwood, a removal of shoes at Ely Kishimoto, and a slo-mo walking style at Basso & Brooke.

Crave: Lace Beaded Topshop Jacket

Something about this lace beaded Topshop jacket is kind of Michael Jackson-y but we still think it would look pretty fierce over a few layers of Michael Stars tank tops, paired with tight jeans and high heels. It’s just white — never a good color for outerwear! — so don’t pick up any babies (or drunken hipsters) who
look like they’re gonna puke. [$170, Topshop.com] Keep reading »

Accessorize Your Way To A Thinner Look

Don’t feel guilty or beat yourself up about not shedding a few extra pounds. The gym is for losers! Instead, raid your jewelry box. I know you’re thinking: What do accessories have to do with looking thinner? Well, keep reading to find out. Keep reading »

Hello, SM Kitty

This new ad for MAC Cosmetics is a surreal, kinky take on Alice in Wonderland, featuring a trip through a (ahem) pink tunnel that takes Alice into a faraway land, where she gets molested by a roving gang of shirtless, male, SM-styled Hello Kitties. Well, then! Apparently, the four-minute, outre mini-movie is a tie-in to the new Hello Kitty-MAC collaboration. This time around, though, Hello Kitty goes black, and the product line includes Hello Kitty “kitten-eyes,” crosshatched fake eyelashes, Hello Kitty On the Prowl platinum nail polish, and a Hello Kitty plush doll in black pleather. Clearly, all things Alice in Wonderland are looking to be the new new thing. Tim Burton is at work on a live action/stop motion new movie version of Lewis Carroll’s novel, starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Anne Hathaway. Who knows if Burton’s redux will be quite so fetishistic as this. Keep reading »
