Radical Read

We suppose it’s a little weird to be writing about wanting a book — but if you’ve read even a tiny excerpt of Rachel Shukert’s impossibly funny travel memoir, Everything Is Going to Be Great, you’ll understand. We started reading a copy of Shukert’s second book over the weekend at a friend’s house, but only made it halfway through — and now we can’t wait to finish it. Shukert’s hilarious tales of bungled travels abroad feature odd places, weird delicacies and even stranger men. It’s basically Eat, Pray, Love‘s younger, more fun sister (with a probable alcohol problem).

In Praise Of Realistic Movie Wardrobes: “The Town”

Have you seen “The Town” yet? I loved it so much that I saw it once, waited a day, and saw it again. “The Town” was a hugely male-dominated movie, so one thing that really impressed me was the main female character’s cute-but-realistic wardrobe. Keep reading »

Creepy Or Cool: The Self-Painting Dress

No, this is not a costume left over from “The Fifth Element.” It’s a project called Pseudomorphs, created by Dutch designer Anouk Wipprecht. The concept: a self-painting dress that brings together art, fashion and technology. The futuristic-looking felt garment is hooked up to stores of paint, which are fed through tubes by a mechanical system. As the paint disperses through the fabric, it creates a unique design. Check out the video to see how it works! [Fashioning Tech] Keep reading »

These Are American Apparel’s “Halloween Costumes”

We understand that since American Apparel is having financial troubles, the company might try to get creative with its ways to push merchandise. A product of this is perhaps the Costume Builder you’ll now find online. Except … it would appear that American Apparel’s idea of a “Halloween costume” is shockingly similar to the outfits the retailer normally peddles (which, to some, may indeed be quite scary). Above, you’ll find costumes for a “Disco Chick,” an “Archaeologist,” and a “Slumber Party” (which apparently can be manifested as a person wearing a scrunchy). To be fair, some of the other styling suggestions are a bit more traditional, like the hula girl, bumble bee, and pirate. So it might not actually be such a bad idea if you’re in need of a last-minute or easy costume and want to be able to wear it again–unless you cut it up like a lot of the themes encourage.

Or you could just go as an American Apparel employee. [American Apparel] Keep reading »

Trend Report: Is The Fanny Pack Making A Comeback (Again)?

One of fashion’s most despised accessories: the fanny pack. The purse-alternative accessory seems to come and go, sometimes ironically, sometimes in seriousness. It’s been a while since we spotted one, but today we came across a Zambos & Siega python print version as well as a Rebecca Minkoff studded model. These pouches seem to add an edge to the style, making the look a bit more luxe, rocker-esque, and bad-ass. Think we can expect to see the fanny pack return as a winter trend? Would you be ready to saddle up with one? [Shopbop, Kitson] Keep reading »
