Awesome Affordable Etsy Find: Blast From The Past

My friend Brittany and I used to play MASH in our Mead composition books. Now I have the opportunity to mash my money into a wallet that looks like a Mead composition book. The whole thing is just blowing my mind. It’s also reminding me that I’m destined to live in a shack with eight kids and my husband, AJ McLean from the Backstreet Boys. Sweet. Frisky Q&A: Chrisette Michele Says Red Lipstick Gives Her Freedom

In anticipation of the release of her third LP, Let Freedom Reign (out today, Nov. 30), Island Def Jam recording artist Chrisette Michele let a bunch of bloggers pick her brain last night at an event hosted by the Carol’s Daughter store in Harlem. We all know she’s an extremely talented singer and musician (you know, one who actually has a voice and isn’t about gyrating for attention), so what I really wanted to know were Chrisette’s style and beauty preferences. Find out how she gets the power to voice her thoughts and why the reaction to her natural hair was annoying, after the jump. Keep reading »

Black TV Newswoman Vows To “Go Natural” With Her Hair

At the beginning of reporter Rochelle Ritchie’s TV news career, she was told she had to get hair extensions. Like millions of black women, Rochelle has worn long, shiny extensions and wigs because she thought it made her look more professional. For six years, she “faithfully” wore wigs and weaves and progressed up the corporate ladder. But that’s come to an end. “After years of manipulation, I took the break step of going natural,” she now says on this great five-minute-long segment on WPTV. From now on, Rochelle will be reporting from West Palm Beach, Florida, with just her own ‘do — and she looks gorgeous. Keep reading »

Would You Wear: House Of Dereon Spring 2011 Shoes?

Photos of the spring 2011 shoe collection from Beyonce’s House of Dereon have hit the web. And I’m completely underwhelmed because all these styles look really familiar. Similar incarnations of that gladiator sandal, for instance, made their debut two summers ago and were extremely popular this past summer. And the black and white sandal and the white studded sandal look like shoes anyone could buy from Target or Payless. There isn’t anything wrong with shopping at Target and Payless, mind you, but isn’t Beyonce trying to establish House of Dereon as a brand ahead of the curve? That is the goal of most designers, isn’t it — to start the trends, not copy them? So, you know my opinion now, but would you wear shoes from the House of Dereon spring collection? Um, No: Ch’Arms, The Bodyshapers For Your Arms

You can blame Michelle Obama for this one. Thanks, Mobama, for making America so obsessed with your sculpted guns. Of course, most of us are too lazy to work out hardcore enough to actually attain Mobama-worthy results. So now there are shaping devices for your arms to fake having toned limbs. In the bizarro mixed-up world of the Home Shopping Network, you may come across these: Ch’Arms, the Spanx-like body shapers for your arms. Keep reading »

A Winter Hat To Tap Into Your Animal Instincts

Guess what: winter sucks. If you live in the Eastern hemisphere like we do, you know that starting December 1st or so, it can be nearly impossible to go outside and feel even moderately warm. You need armor. And preferably something heavy-duty that doesn’t look crazy (read: no homemade mustache knit caps or scary bank robber-style hats). Our pick? This Topshop faux fur trapper hat, which will keep you cozy and make a statement.
