Before you assume you can’t wear white denim, consider these tricks. I’m not a size zero or two — far from it — and blanco jeans don’t look tragic on me.
- Buy a half size or a full size bigger. When they’re white, tight jeans flatter no one. Avoid the sausage leg look—no one is looking at your size tag. I’m a fan of the J.Crew cropped matchstick jeans with platform heels. [$85, J.Crew]
- You can go cheap—but try them on first. The cheaper the jean, the thinner the jean. With regular wash, thin is fine—but with white denim you can see everything. The recession has had some pretty obvious effects on the fashion industry. Designers dropped out of fashion week, labels have closed, and mega sales are a regular occurrence as stores try to stay afloat. One unforeseen consequence of the economy is that blond models are getting most of the work in editorial shoots and ad campaigns.
Instead of sticking with the recent trend to use quirkier-looking girls, blond-haired, blue-eyed models are getting booked left and right. When there’s money at stake in a tough economy, no one wants to be blamed for making risky decisions that fail. According to Storm Models managing director Sarah Doukas, who discovered Kate Moss, “Ultimately, blonds are a safer bet for clients who want to hedge their bets. Plus when we’re constantly surrounded by bad news, that blond stereotype is zingy and upbeat.” Her agency and Premier Model Management have seen increases in the number of requests for blond models.
This reasoning may be why girls like Lily Donaldson and Toni Garn are getting so many jobs, and why Claudia Schiffer is back in business with Ferragamo and YSL ads. Even Gap’s spring campaign featured only blonds and a few minorities. Flip through the pages of Vogue or Elle and see how many pages feature flaxen-haired models. The New York-based fashion photographer is famous for concocting stylish still life pictures, and his latest series depicts lollipops in the shape of luxury brand logos. A UK writer scoped out the cleavage facial in which a spa professional massaged “bust uplifting serums” onto her breasts, followed by a rose oil hydrating mask. Alas, she wrote, the cleavage facial didn’t make her bust appear perkier, but she wasn’t complaining, saying it felt like “75 minutes of pure indulgence.”

In the Met Ball Special, WWWWD reports that Karl Lagerfeld was thought dead due to the death of a German farmer with the same name, and caused a stir when he showed up alive: “… Anna Wintour threw herself at his feet, crying ‘I’m sorry I never respond to your Evites!’ while kissing his shiny patent toes, Karl claimed to have been ‘a touch surprised.’” Other news includes a Tweet roundup (Mario Testino: “@gwyneth’s place. blaming my farts on apple. must quit cheese”), a report on Blake Lively’s new gender-neutral fragrance, and model Erin Wasson’s crack addict date.

This is one of those head-scratcher products I’m not sure who would want to buy. This Souffrez Pour Moi underwear is made with “artfully placed seams, beads, and textured fabric to create intimate, temporary patterns in the skin.” I don’t know about you, but if I ever discovered an “intimate, temporary pattern” on my skin, I’d make an appointment with my doctor and be tempted to warn any previous sex partners of the new development. The underwear isn’t meant to just be worn, though, oh, no — it’s supposed to provoke thought, too, on “how beauty and suffering are subtly intertwined.” Call me crazy, but I don’t think there’s anything subtle — or beautiful, for that matter — about bejeweled panties.
