Black Is Back For Spring (Not That It Went Anywhere, Really)

We all just dodged a fashion bullet—black is the new black for spring 2010. Deep breath. OK, yeah, you would have worn black whether it was anointed “in” or not. But if you think about it, this declaration is really going to save us all a bundle of cash. Picture any fashionable chick—she wants to look even a little bit with it; so what does she do? She buys a few pieces that are in the color everyone is talking about. But not this year, oh no, she doesn’t have to buy a thing (well, ideally, anyway!) because she’s most likely got 40 percent of her closet devoted to black pants, dresses, tops, you name it. Rejoice! However, not that we’re pushing you into the stores, if you are looking to drop some dough on a black something, here’s what to look for. Keep reading »

Baby Phat Gets All Exotic With Beauty Cues From Morocco

The beauty look of the models at the Baby Phat fashion show captured the Moroccan essence of the collection. True to Baby Phat form, the sex-factor was also a huge focus. But I wonder how the beauty team was able to get anything done because the teensy-tiny hair and makeup area was shear pandemonium. Well, maybe it was more like an ordered chaos with hair and makeup brushes going in every direction while flashbulbs went off every second. I had to sneak behind curtains and stand on a chair in four-inch heels to get my own shots. But I couldn’t slink my way into the crowd that mobbed Kim Kardashian when she appeared. Sadly, my photo of her isn’t fit to publish. Music by Jay-Z blasting from unseen speakers helped keep the mood festively frenzied. PS. Where the you-know-what was Kimora? Luckily, I was able to score some cool beauty secrets. Keep reading for how you can get a look that oozes opulence and sex appeal. Keep reading »

Weird Stuff My Mom Tells Me: Put Spoons On Your Face

My mother—along with your mom and generations of moms behind us—is crazy. Most of our talks aren’t so much conversations as they are her instructing me to do insane things. “Start a low-carb gift basket company!” “Learn masonry!” “Do a flamenco dance in the face of men!” Last night it was, “You look tired, you should put cold spoons under your eyes.” Huh? Stick two in the freezer, and each morning hold the backs of the spoons beneath your eyes. It will relieve puffiness and make you look refreshed. Apparently, this is a pretty old beauty trick in the book. But, I tried it, and, I must say…sheer genius. What are some other weird (but helpful) beauty tips your mother has given you? 5 Kind Of Wearable Items From Lauren Conrad’s New Kohl’s Line

Lauren Conrad‘s latest attempt at designing clothes, called LC Lauren Conrad, is now available exclusively at Kohl’s. We weren’t fans of Lauren’s first try since we abhor jersey fabric, especially when it’s priced a gillion times higher than Forever 21, but some of these new clothes aren’t bad. After the jump, the five pieces from LC Lauren Conrad that we might wear (though we’d have to lie about who designed them). Keep reading »

Quick Pic: Attack Of The Semi-Naked Models

To celebrate the launch of their “New World Order” line of lingerie, Agent Provocateur deposited a fleet of underwear models wearing leather, thigh-high boots in front of the department store Selfridges and managed to literally stop traffic. Wonder why? [9/16/09, London] Keep reading »

Would You Let Your Teen (Or Pre-Teen!) Wear Avril Lavigne’s Line?

Avril Lavigne has a clothing line called Abbey Dawn. Oh yes, it is true, and she showed it off in all its Hot Top-erif-ic glory at New York Fashion Week. How she managed this, we do not know. Chock-full of “punk rock” plaids, tulle skirts, bad-girl pink prints, and graphic t-shirts, Avril says of the collection: “I’m making sure that I think people in their 20s are going to wear it because it’s going to be a sexy fit, not just, ‘Oh, T-shirts and hoodies.’” Eloquently put, Avril.

As it were, it looks like the pop-punk musician’s fashions aren’t really targeting a 20-something mature audience but rather teens (through its cheap prices and national availability at Kohl’s) and even pre-teens. The second part of the collection showcased fashions for juniors with 12-year-old models strutting down the runway in ripped jeans, school girl skirts, and thigh-high athletic socks. Just say no children! A few more pics after the jump. [Daily Mail]

What Is Mickey Rourke Doing At Fashion Week?

Fashion Week is not all about the clothes, people. It’s prime celeb-stalking territory, as everyone from Solange Knowles to Rachel Bilson attends the shows at Bryant Park to show support for their favorite designers. Every season it varies — which designer will bring in the most Hollywood power. One season it was Rock & Republic, while another it was Miss Sixty. Marc Jacobs, on the other hand, tried to go the no-celebrity route this year, though Madonna and Lady Gaga were in attendance for his spring 2010 collection. Keep reading »

Thakoon Spring 2010: MObama-Worthy?

Get First Lady Michelle Obama on your side (or in one of your dresses), and your business is guaranteed to boom. That’s what happened to some of MObama’s favorite labels, like Thakoon. So, is it just us, or does Thakoon’s spring 2010 presentation look like it’s playing pretty hard to attract Michelle and all her fashion fans? (Not that we would blame him! Or J.Crew, or Jason Wu, or … )

One half of the collection took things to a wilder side with mish-mashing prints and loose-fitting resort wear for the jet-set crowd. Yet, the rest of the pieces seemed to directly channel the First Lady’s preferences for floral prints, simple lines of boat necks and long-sleeved shifts, and draped cocktail dresses meant for showing off those famous arms. Think some of these designs have already made their way into Michelle’s closet? [Telegraph.co.uk] Keep reading »

The Frisky’s Chic On The Street: London Sep. 16th 2009

Check out these denim harem pants! Julia stood out in the crowd at the Thames Festival in London with this modern take on jeans. She looked effortless and stylish, accessorized with a simple necklace and scarf that didn’t compete with the complicated pants. She discovered these trendsetters at Bershka on Oxford Street in London. As they say around here, cheers to Julia for a brilliant look! Keep reading »

Punk Rock Makeup That Doesn’t Involve Smoky Eyes

Designer Catherine Malandrino’s spring 2010 collection was inspired by four locales: the Sudan, the Sahara, Peru, and Polynesia. The makeup, designed by Tom Pecheux for MAC, reflected these far-flung places. “The look is very ethnic, quite tribal,” Pecheux told us. “There’s a desert flavor, and the makeup is a bit rough. Brushes aren’t allowed. We’re only using fingers.” While the inspiration wasn’t the least bit rock ‘n’ roll, the makeup would be totally fitting for the lead singer of a band. Keep reading »
