Riot Grrl = Better Halloween Costume Than A Spice Girl

I want to hate this costume because it doesn’t represent the ’90′s riot grrl scene at all (think: underground feminist punk like Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney, Bratmobile). But I’d much rather have my little niece go as a botched riot grrl for Halloween than Noah Cyrussexy witch with dominatrix boots get-up! [HalloweenCostumes4U] Keep reading »

Wanna Design Your Own Shoes?

Custom made shoes for women bring orthopedic issues to mind. I obsess over Louboutin and Manolo heels, not specially made footwear. That’s all changing now. For years, bespoke items for men have been well publicized and crave-worthy, but the idea of personalized shoes hasn’t quite made it to the ladies’ realm. Why this is, who knows? Women love shoes more than anything. Finally the bespoke idea is taking hold, and women have the chance to become their own footwear creators. (Hey, if Dina Lohan can do it, anyone can.) But an interesting fact to note is that the term “bespoke” might be switched up for women, leaning towards “footwear couture” to give off a brand new feel. Keep reading »

Jessica Simpson Braves Swine Flu Hotbed In The Name Of Beauty

Poor Jessica Simpson! First she had to sleep between not one, but two nets to keep the bugs out of her bed in Uganda, and now she has risked her life for her new show, “The Price of Beauty.” Here is a Twitpic the singer posted of her and BF hairstylist Ken Paves at the airport departing for India. See how happy and blissfully unaware they are about what horrors they might encounter upon their arrival? The same day they landed in Bollywood to film a segment for the reality program, Indian health officials announced that over 13,000 people are infected with swine flu. Still, brave Jessica and Ken soldiered on, and as of press time, neither one has contracted the illness. The price of beauty, indeed. (Am I the only person who kind of can’t wait to see this show? Quite possibly, yes.) [Examiner] Keep reading »

Get A Closer Look At the Jimmy Choo Collection For H&M

Been chomping at the bit to see more of the Jimmy Choo collection for H&M? Check out this exclusive video with Choo’s founder (and quite the stylish-looking lady) Tamara Mellon, who gives a walk-through of the line. Surprisingly, one of the best parts of the collection is actually the clothes, which have been overshadowed by Choo’s main draw (shoes, obvi). For starters, the cute electric blue shift Mellon wears in the video is part of the deal, plus there’s a glam black evening jumper and a one-shouldered leather dress with ruffle details. Everything is designed to be mixed and matched.

Some great fashion advice from Mellon: she starts conceptualizing an outfit based on the shoes first, and then the accessories. Do you ever dress from the bottom up? Or do you start with the clothes and then add on? [YouTube] Keep reading »

Amelia Earhart—The New Sexy Style Icon?

For Hermès’ fall/winter catalog, the high-fashion house has created an Amelia Earhart-themed spread for its Jean Paul Gaultier-designed collection. Inspired by the new movie? Or just coincidence? In any case, the image of Amelia has been brought back—the aviation record breaker, that is, and not our lovely site editor (although she is super stylish, too).

In this series photographed by Peter Lindbergh, “Amelia” is sexier than ever with strong and manly trench coats, fur-collar bomber jackets, and leather driving gloves. The looks are pretty badass, but we’re not so sure we’d accessorize with aviator goggles and a large wrench. Think we’ll be seeing more sexy Amelia Earhart-inspired designs? Check out a few more pics after the jump. [ViewonFashion Magazine] Keep reading »

Han Cholo Straight Razorblade Pendant

So this pendant is meant for a boy, which is kind of cool, but on a girl it would be totally badass. Take away all images of all the places a lady could shave, and instead think of this as a warning to all foes: “You’ll get cut if you mess with me!” We’re not condoning violence, mind you. We usually cut and slash egos, not flesh, with our quick wit. [$57, 80's Purple] Keep reading »

The Halloween Inspiration Board: Carrie Prejean

Oh Carrie Prejean, we’ve had so much fun getting to know the former Miss California and her distaste for gay marriage in the last year. She’s become one of the most recognizable beauty queens that we’ve ever had the pleasure to see actin’ a fool on national TV! In fact, she makes the perfect Halloween costume, especially if you live in a warm part of the country and can feasibly wear a bathing suit at the end of October. (If not, a tacky white evening dress is a good substitute.) Keep reading »

How To Get The Layered Look Right

After looking through this blog post of all sorts of beautifully (and expertly) layered folks on the street, I came to the following sartorial realization: creating a slim and cohesive layered look ain’t all that easy. (Though this girl, above, certainly makes it look that way!) So many people (myself included sometimes) end up with big, bulky outfits that look disheveled, and not artfully so. So I figured it was high time we passed on a few layering tricks and tips—it’s all about balance, color and texture. Check out all 10 after the jump, and if you have any fail-safe methods for looking chicly layered, I’m dying to hear!

The Frisky’s Chic On The Street: A Hamburglar Sighting In Prague

Staska looks like an adorable, bohemian version of the Hamburglar while on a break from work in Prague. She meticulously chooses her accessories to compliment her look. Where do we start? Check out her two different earrings, the way her socks echo her undershirt, and the red trainers that make it all come together. We’re getting hungry. Keep reading »

Quick Tip Of The Day: How To Tuck In A Too-Long Belt

While I like a nice bangle bracelet or a long charm-laden necklace as much as the next girl, my go-to accessory is the belt, because adding one — or switching them up — can change an entire outfit. The only problem is that belts that work with lower-slung pants are way too long to wear with dresses or over cardigans. J.Crew often styles its catalog models with the end of their belts tucked in, and while we like the casual coolness of this, Kristen Bell took this technique one step further by turning a too-long belt into a decorative knot in the front. To tuck yours the way Kristen did, take the end of your belt and slip it under, then over the belt, pulling it through the loop you created. Voilà! Keep reading »
