How Did You Spend Your Wedding Night?

If you’re newly married, like I am, New York Magazine has a question for you. While they couldn’t care less about the “amazing D.J. who complied with your drunken friend’s repeated requests for Journey” or any other detail about your wedding day, they are interested in your wedding night. Specifically, they want to know if you got busy with your new spouse. Replies will be published (anonymously, of course) in their winter “Weddings” issue. For the record, after an intense week and a very emotionally-heightened day, I passed out fully clothed in a drunken stupor sometime between 2 and 3 a.m. on my wedding night. There were, however, several free hours between our lunch reception and the after-party at our apartment, and when someone asked how we were going to fill the time, I replied, “Consummate and decorate,” and that’s exactly what we did. You May Now Marry Your HRP-4C Robot Bride

Robot Bride

Back in March, Annika posted about a robot supermodel walking the catwalk who was threatening to take jobs away from the ranks of sniveling supermodels. Now that robot, otherwise known as HRP-4C, has gone bridal. The bride bot, who was created by Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, made her blushing debut in an Osaka fashion show and wore a princess bride creation by designer Yumi Katsura. She didn’t exactly speed down the runway, but she did slowly glide down the catwalk, casting sidelong glances at the audience to the tune of Michael Jackson‘s “Billie Jean.” After the jump, check out the video of the fembot bride and her glow-in-the-dark wedding dress. Wedding Debt Can Last Longer Than Marriage

Wedding Loans Outlast Marriage

If you have an extravagant wedding, you might be in debt longer than your marriage lasts. According to a U.K. financial management company, couples borrow an average of $42,000 to pay for their wedding. This can take 16 years to pay off with interest and everything, and the average marriage supposedly lasts 11.5 years! So, when it’s time for you to get divorced, you might end up divvying up debt, rather than assets. If you’re engaged, take the advice of our recently married Wendy and make your wedding more about memories than money. [Marie Claire U.K.]

A NY Times Wedding Announcement That Hits Close To Home

A NY Times Wedding Announcement That Hits Close To Home

A little shout-out is in order to our own Wendy Atterberry, who married Andrew Condell on Friday. The twosome got an announcement written up in The New York Times today (which, um, also resulted in The Frisky’s first mention in the newspaper) and Times readers got a little insight into their love story. Of course, Frisky readers know it well. Wendy lived in Chicago, but a friend set her up on a date with a guy who lived in NYC. Things went so well that they started a long-distance relationship. Eventually, Wendy moved to NYC to be with Andrew, but planned on getting her own apartment. Instead ... “We were so happy together, I never left.” They got engaged in February, and despite ominous weather reports and a last-minute flu, their wedding occurred under clear skies and without a hitch. Santa’s Helpers Get Married

Santa Claus World Congress Wedding

The Santa Claus World Congress in Copenhagen, Denmark, brings together Santas from around the world, and this year, the event got off to a cute start with a wedding between Rune Hamrath Hansen (who has elf ears!) and Sine Andersen. The two married in a Christmas-themed wedding. Andersen wore a red dress and veil and Hansen sported an outfit that looks like what elves wear while making toys in Santa’s workshop. Do the two just really love Christmas and Jolly Old St. Nick? We have no idea, but we bet the bride wore green lingerie under her dress. [AP]

Wedding Disasters Of Varying Degrees

Today’s lesson in doing things the old fashioned way comes from Tuscany, where a couple getting married in a park hired a small aircraft to fly over and toss the bouquet to a hopeful line of women. As you can imagine, it was an epic failure. A passenger on the craft—not the bride—threw the bouquet, and instead of it floating down to the wedding guests, it got caught in the plane’s rotor, which caused an engine fire and explosion. This not only horrified the wedding guests, but the craft continued to do harm by crashing into the woods next to a hostel hosting 50 children. But for all their stupidity, the couple can give thanks—both the pilot and passenger escaped unharmed. After the jump, a couple of videos to show that these wedding mishaps never fail to shock or amuse. [Daily Mail]

Help Me Be The Best Bridesmaid Ever!

advice for a bridesmaid in a wedding

Three of my friends recently got engaged, and I’m feeling a little overwhelmed. I’m a bridesmaid in one of the weddings and want to be as helpful to all three of them as I can, but I’m not sure what I’m supposed to be doing. In fact, I actually picked up a copy of Modern Bride last weekend when I was in a nail salon, because I thought it might give me a clue! It did not. Since many of you Frisky readers have been in friends’ weddings, or at least gone to one, I’d love for you to share the tips and tricks you’ve picked up along the way in the comments.

Girl Talk: How Engagements Are A Crash-Course In Marriage

Engagements Prepare Couples For Marriage

Before I got engaged, I used to think a couple’s truest test of compatibility and readiness for marriage was living together. What could be more of a test, I reasoned, than successfully sharing the same space, splitting the bills, and delegating household chores while still enjoying each other’s company and remaining sexually attracted to one another? That’s why, when my boyfriend proposed after nearly a year and a half of co-habitation, I didn’t hesitate in saying ‘yes.’ I’d lived with a boyfriend before — for over three years — and when that relationship eventually became more like brother-sister than boyfriend-girlfriend, I ended things and wondered if it was even possible for me to live with someone and continue loving him in the romantic sense. But then I met Drew and realized it was.

Why I Hated His Strip-Club Bachelor Party

Stag Party

Being the modern, liberated, well-educated woman that I am, I never thought I would mind the man in my life going to a strip club. Years ago, I would even occassionally join my guy friends for an evening at a gentlemen’s club. It meant free cocktails all night, and have you ever seen the ladies’ room at a strip club?  The restrooms are girly bonanzas that range between the cosmetics aisle at a drug store to a miniature Sephora. Plus, strippers on their bathroom breaks have the best gossip. “Desperate Housewives”? “Days of Our Lives”? Child’s play in comparison.

What If I Don’t Want to Get Married?

Bride

This afternoon, I was at my parents’ house for a family friend get-together. I always enjoy these “parties” because they are both low-key and you are able to receive an update on the lives of people that you haven’t seen for years! But, slowly the conversation always dwindles to a certain sensitive topic, or one that I am incredibly passionate about. As a single young woman, I am also a huge feminist, and I get this certain itch in my chest when I hear statements that just don’t agree with my heart.

The “New” Wedding Food Looks A Lot Like What We Eat At Backyard Barbecues

backyard barbecue-style weddings

Weddings are just one opulent aspect of life that has gotten downsized during this recession. In an effort to at least make it look as though they’re not spending loads of dough on their wedding, more brides have been taking a “down home” approach to the ceremony and reception. The New York Times reports that more women are throwing backyard barbecue-like parties with pies instead of tiered wedding cakes, and slider burgers instead of salmon. This is cute and all, but more folksy weddings don’t actually cost less than extravagant ones. But, since we’re not really into excessive displays of wealth, here’s what we’d serve if we threw tradition (and smoked salmon) out the window…

A Dream Wedding For Star Trek Fans

Star Trek Enterprise

Destination weddings are all the rage in this recession, and now one lucky couple will get to live long and prosper with a “Star Trek” wedding of their dreams. The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia is holding a contest to find a couple who wants to be married or renew their vows on the bridge of the Enterprise inside a Star Trek exhibit at the Institute. The deadline to apply is June 24, so engaged Trekkies, you’d better hurry up and submit a photo and paragraph explaining why you’d want to say “I do” on the Enterprise. Sadly, we doubt Chris Pine will be able to make it to the ceremony. [Franklin Institute via Luxist]

“Hitched Or Ditched” Makes Us Wonder About Weddings

While “Hitched or Ditched” is quite possibly the most terrible show on television, I have found myself watching it on more than one occasion. The show gives a couple who seem to be ready for marriage but are avoiding it the chance to have their dream ceremony. Over a period of four days, they have to decide whether they should indeed get married, or split up for good. Of course, drama ensues, exes are brought back to life, and in-laws do embarrassing things.

Tokyo Couples Can Rent Guests For Their Wedding

Rented Wedding Guests In Tokyo

While most couples are trying to lessen the expense of their wedding during these tough economic times, couples in Japan actually rent extra family members, friends, and coworkers. In Japan, a wedding is seen as a formal event, so it must be attended by as many people as possible. Bosses usually give speeches and colleagues or friends perform at the party. But if a cousin, boss, or some other guest can’t attend, the bride or groom can hire a staff member of Office Agents for 20,000 yen ($200) to come in their place. “Suddenly, a guest might not be able to make it. Or maybe you are concerned about the gap in the number of guests you have compared to your partner. Or, there are many temp workers these days and they may be uncomfortable inviting the boss,” said Hiroshi Mizutani, who heads Office Agents, to Reuters. At one wedding, each of the groom’s 30 guests were fake friends and family. But this firm doesn’t just rent wedding guests. They also specialize in fake funeral attendees, secretaries for those that want to seem more important, and even lovers to introduce to the family.

All My Friends Are Getting Married, And I’m, Well, Not Even Close

I'm OK with being single when all my friends are getting engaged.

In the last month or so, three of my close friends have gotten engaged. Meanwhile, I haven’t had a serious relationship for three years. For some reason, whenever I tell people that another one of my pals has a ring on her finger, they get a sad, sympathetic look on their face, like they’re afraid I might start crying or go into a deep depression. They shouldn’t be concerned, though, because I’m not the least bit jealous.

Beauty Tips For Stealing The Bride’s Show

Kate Bosworth at Met Ball

You can’t wear a white dress to a wedding. It’s just not a subtle enough method for stealing the show. Turn up at the ceremony wearing a floor-length cream silk number, and suddenly everyone’s muttering insults about how you’re the “Inappropriate One.” Instead, walk in looking a level of gorgeous that diverts attention without being completely trashy. Kate Bosworth’s Met Ball hair and makeup (and dress) absolutely slaughtered the competition, and we show you how to steal her look after the jump.
