Anna Wintour Responds To Being Called A “Cold Bitch”

Splash News

“60 Minutes” devoted a 13-minute segment to profiling Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue, this weekend. Journalist Morley Safer described Wintour as “a name that strikes terror in some, loathing in others, and transforms some into obsequious toadies.” Not that his observation is incorrect, but, geez, what a way to introduce someone.

It didn’t stop there. If the “60 Minutes” profile didn’t have you squealing at the high-profile cameos (Karl Lagerfeld! Andre Leon Talley!), maybe you’re a bigger ice queen than this supposed queen of the ice queens herself. Clip after the jump ...

You’re Hot. Your Mom Edits French Vogue. This Is What Your Apartment Looks Like.

Julia and Carine Roitfeld

Maybe the week after Mother’s Day isn’t the most tactful time to be envious of other people’s mothers, but, really, we wish Carine Roitfeld, the editor of French Vogue, was our mom the other 51 weeks of the year. Oh, if only Carine had delivered us, our apartment might look more like daughter Julia Restoin Roitfeld’s than a “before” pad on “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.”

Click through the pics on The Selby for Julia’s trés, trés chic abode, where all is bejeweled, furry, or white—the way we would have imagined it in our flannel bedsheet-ed dreams. Julia wears red lipstick and heels lounging on her couch! There’s a glass skull! Shoes galore! A single, artfully photographed can of Coke Zero! Top that, Bee Schaffer. [The Selby]

Behind The Scenes At Vogue With Anna Wintour

We normally don’t have plans on Sunday night, but this week, we’re booked. At long last, the Anna Wintour “60 Minutes” segment will air on CBS at 7 p.m. ET. Recently, Anna has been opening herself up to the public much more than usual. Not only is “The September Issue” documentary being released this September, but she also spoke in New York earlier this week. I attended her Q&A on Tuesday, and most of the discussion focused on the business of fashion and publishing (though she did divulge that she “hasn’t been able to look at brown the same way” since wearing that color school uniform growing up). We’re hoping the “60 Minutes” segment will let us into her life a little more, and we know we’ll get to hear her talk about her ever-present sunglasses: “They are seriously useful. I can sit in a show and if I am bored out of my mind, nobody will notice… At this point, they have become, really, armor.” [CBS News]

Vogue’s Beyonce Cover, Racist?

Beyonce Cover Of Vogue Shape Issue

Some folks have gotten their panties in a bunch over Beyonce’s cover for the “Shape Issue” of Vogue. Beyonce is one of only five black women to grace the cover of Vogue since it was founded in 1892, but blogs like Jezebel and Sociological Images think the magazine was being sexist and racist by putting her on the cover. I agree to some extent, but not for their reasons.

Style Buzz: Will “The Rachel Zoe Project” Be Back?

Rachel Zoe Being Filmed For Second Season?
  • TV cameras for Bravo trailed stylist-to-the-starlets Rachel Zoe at Fashion Week.  Does this mean The Rachel Zoe Project is up for a second season? I’d die. D.I.E. DIE. [Fashion Week Daily]
  • Vogue put a woman of color of their cover for the second time this year!  First, Michelle Obama…now Beyonce on the April issue! [Jezebel]
  • Last week, European Union banned animal testing for seven different toxicity tests of cosmetics, including skin and eye irritancy.  It’s also banned the import of chemicals that were tested in this way on animals.  Great news for animal lovers, but it won’t go into effect until March 2013. [Nature.com]
  • Um, ew.  Some poor guy in England got a tattoo as a birthday present from his girlfriend but the tat became infected and he died.  That story right there will be repeated millions of times by mothers the world over, I promise you.  [Telegraph]

Michelle Obama Is The Fourth Black Woman To Grace Vogue’s Cover

    Michelle Obama on Vogue

It’s official: Michelle Obama is a Vogue cover girl. The March 2009 issue, which will hit newsstands next week, features the first lady on its cover wearing a Jason Wu dress (the same designer who created her inauguration night gown). Inside the magazine, Obama is pictured at the Hay-Adams hotel in Washington, D.C., wearing a Narciso Rodriguez dress and a J.Crew ensemble. While a number of first ladies have been featured in the so-called fashion Bible, starting with Lou Hoover in 1929, Hillary Clinton is the only other one to make the cover, in 1998. But perhaps what’s more exciting than Obama being the second first lady to be on the cover of Vogue is that she is the fourth black woman to be featured on the cover in the magazine’s history.

What’s With Women’s Fashion Mags Hiring Male Sports Star Interns? And When Can We Get One?

Male Sports Stars Interning At Fashion Magazines

David Beckham*, what hath you wrought?

First, the New York Rangers’ left wing Sean Avery interned at Vogue and blogged for MensVogue.com about everything from what’s in his closet (Dries Van Noten, Chanel) to what it’s like fracturing one’s spleen on the ice.

Now, Philadelphia Eagles football player, Stewart Bradley, (who is a total stud muffin, BTW) is interning at Elle magazine.  The Philadelphia Daily News reports that the 6’4”, 255 lb. linebacker may even be working at Fashion Week later this month.

Hmm, I’d be interested to know if all of Elle‘s interns get to work at Fashion Week.

(*Of course, Becks hasn’t actually interned at a fashion magazine, so this is not exactly his fault.  But Becks is responsible for the idea that gifted athletes could also be metrosexual fashionistas.  Why, just this week we posted a pic of Becks in his undies, posing for Armani.)

Are Plus-Sized Woman Finally Acceptable Fashion Icons?

    Adele

Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour is not known for loving larger women. In fact, she even got Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy to see a trainer and go on a diet for a story in the magazine’s April 2008 issue. But it seems as though Wintour is changing her tune. The British, Grammy-nominated singer Adele was recently photographed by Annie Liebovitz for an issue of Vogue, and Wintour took such a liking to her that the editor offered to style her for the Grammy Awards. Hmm… This sounds a lot like the time when Vogue editor-at-large André Leon Talley took Jennifer Hudson under his Balenciaga-designed wing, after she was nominated for an Oscar for “Dreamgirls.” Could it be possible that Vogue has, at last, realized that amazing women come in double-digit sizes? We certainly hope so, because most of us look a whole lot more like Adele in clothes than we do Kate Moss. Now, if Wintour can aid Adele in landing a deal as the face of some fashion house, then we’ll really know that change has come.

Ring, Ring, Anna Wintour Is Calling

    Anna Wintour

If those Rachel Zoe ringtones weren’t enough to satisfy your fashion-for-your-phone appetite (or if they weren’t compatible with your iPhone), now you can get Anna Wintour and André Leon Talley on your cell, thanks to Cityfile. The Vogue editor-in-chief gives you style advice: “Jeans and T-shirts can be equally fashionable as an Oscar de la Renta ballgown.” And the editor-at-large has a few words for those trying to get into the fashion biz: “Don’t be so fabulous that you can’t Xerox!” which would be an excellent ringtone for when your boss calls. Does Vogue Need A Makeover?

    Anne Hathaway Vogue

Over the past few months, the rumor mill has been churning out gossip about Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour being replaced. While Condé Nast, which owns the magazine, has denied this, many are taking the opportunity to criticize the magazine. In Thursday’s New York Times, fashion critic Cathy Horyn writes that the magazine has become “stale and predictable” over the last few years. Vogue hasn’t changed with the times or the technology, and it covers the same set of people every month.

    The Daily Hotness: Daniel Radcliffe

    Daniel Radcliffe Naked

Harry Potter isn’t afraid to put it all out there. Daniel Radcliffe, who starred as the magical teen titan Harry Potter, earlier this week admitted he has neurological disorder, dyspraxia, which affects his coordination.  But he can still cast a spell on you!  Just check out his pony play spread in the September issue of Vogue.  He’s riding horses and they’re all bareback—giddy up! Although the weird fetal/grandpa shot creeps us out, we’ll blame it (like the Miley Cyrus photo controversy) on famous photographer Annie Leibovitz.  Sure, he says he stripped down to promote the new Broadway play he’s horsing around in—Equus—but we’ll take any excuse to see this barely legal babe in the buff! Vogue Italia’s “Black Issue” Gets A Distribution Increase

    Italian Vogue's Black Issue

While all the techies were clamoring for the new iPhone last Friday, fashionistas were trying to secure Vogue Italia‘s monumental “Black Issue”—all of the featured models are Black and all the featured content addresses Black women. But don’t fret if you haven’t gotten your copy yet. Conde Nast has increased distribution by 40 percent in the U.S. and Italian copies earmarked for return will be sent to the U.S. The company will also print an additional 10,000 copies to keep up with demand for the issue. Cheers to Vogue Italia for taking this giant leap toward diversity. Now let’s hope special issues like this won’t be necessary in the future. And we’ll be watching the runways in September to see diversity in practice. [WWD]

    The Daily Hotness: Rafael Nadal

    Rafael Nadal

I could honestly not give a poop about tennis, but I did go to a US Open game once and it was kind of amazing how hushed the crowd gets during a match—you can hear a pin drop, not to mention every grunt out of the players’ mouths. Anyway, I was kind of interested in Wimbledon this year though, mainly because I am so sick of reading about Roger Federer in Vogue and seeing him sitting front row at every fashion show because of the crush Anna Wintour has on him. I kind of hate a guy who always wins, except maybe Tiger Woods, because he is too sexy to hate. So when Rafael Nadal engaged in the battle to end all battles with Federer yesterday and managed to pull out a win, I was like, “Damn, that is one fine piece of chorizo.” He’s Spanish. Spanish sausage. Get it?

Vogue Italia’s “Black Issue” Doesn’t Address The Real Issue

    Vogue Italia

I can’t remember the last time I picked up a lady mag and saw an African-American woman on the cover that wasn’t Halle Berry. The beauty and hair advice doled out in these magazines is targeted at white women unless otherwise noted and the major runway shows are pitifully powder white (Eastern-European is very in). It’s sucky, to say the least. Vogue Italia decided to do something about it, declaring their July issue “The Black Issue”—all of the featured models would be Black and all the featured content would address Black women. This is all fine and dandy on a purely surface level I suppose, except that by making this issue “special” they’ve defined all other, white-centric issues as the usual and the norm. Rather than having more women of color in every issue, targeting a single issue at one ethnic group doesn’t really do anything to increase diversity, now does it? That’s weak. [NY Times]

Stars, They’re Just Like Us!: Post-Partum Depression

    Gwyneth Paltrow

Even practically perfect in every way celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow occasionally suffer from the ho-hum suckishness of life. The actress tells the May issue of Vogue that she battled post-partum depression after the birth of her son Moses. She suspects missing out on her usual accupuncture routine may have been the cause. God, this reminds me of how I just get the worst mood swings when I don’t get make it to my weekly Reiki session, you know what I mean, ladies?! [Us Weekly]
