The Frisky’s Chic On The Street: Rome Oct. 12th 2009

Caragh Johnson

When I discovered that over-the-knee boots were fall’s “must have,” I flashed to the opening scene of “Pretty Woman” and promptly dismissed them from my future. After seeing the look executed on a non-prostitute, I may have to reconsider. The thigh is the limit for Marta; her Calvin Klein Jeans dress and Zara boots both just reach.

The Frisky’s Chic On The Street: Bordeaux Oct. 9th 2009

Anais

The menswear look is always a winner, but it’s best to not look like you just piled on your boyfriend’s clothes. Anais has the tomboy-chic look down pat on the streets of Bordeaux. Her Sandro ankle-skimming pants and oxford shoes are masculine yet sexy. So, uh, you know, let’s hear it for the boys!

The Frisky’s Chic On The Street: Venice Oct. 7th 2009

Natalie

Venice is 99 percent filled with tourists wearing t-shirts, sneakers, and fanny packs. In the land of over 400 walking bridges and stone alleys, making a wardrobe effort does not go unnoticed. Natalie, studying art history abroad, wears a custom-made tweed topper from her native Republic of Maldova.  She picks out the fabric and buttons, and her tailor measures and sews. This is the original design collaboration, before the H&Ms and Topshops of the world!

Travel Diary: My Costa Rican Surf Adventure

Costa Rica

I recently crossed something off my bucket list. At 29-almost-30, I finally learned how to surf. Despite growing up in sunny San Diego, I’d never learned, and after a failed attempt to teach myself in Hawaii as a teenager—resulting in bloody knees and feet after a detour through a coral reef—I never tried again. Until this summer.

British Socialite Teaches Us How NOT To Behave On A Plane

How Not To Behave On An Airplane

Want to know what not to do when you fly the friendly skies? Just ask British socialite Clare Irby, a descendant of the Guinness family, and random dude Daniel Melia, who may go down in history as the worst passengers ever. They tore s**t up on an 11-hour flight from India to London—they were so punk-rock that the cops were waiting to arrest them on the tarmac. The two got it on while Clare’s two-year-old son cried and Daniel’s girlfriend slept nearby. When the GF woke up, she and Daniel got in a fight and he threw his iPod headphones at her. Meanwhile, Clare woke sleeping passengers, demanding wine and accusing the in-flight staff of stealing her bag filled with diamonds. The ruckus continues, after the jump.

It was only a matter of time before we covered a city famous for sex. But Amsterdam is really less about the Red Light District and coffee shops than it is about great Dutch architecture, trendy restaurants, and great vintage shopping.

Glamping: Camping For The High-Maintenance Set

Glamping: Camping For The High-Maintenance Set

I’ve never understood the appeal of roughing it. Communing with nature can be fun for some, but I prefer a concrete jungle any day. Modern amenities like hot showers and flushing toilets are necessities to me, not luxuries. But pretty soon I might be singing a different tune because, apparently, “glamping” is on the rise. Glamorous camping sites make roughing it a little more palatable because most of the comforts of home are available in the outdoors, making camping an upscale vacation option. Most glamping establishments currently cater to a very upscale clientele, according to The Wall Street Journal,  but you can turn a normal campsite into a glamping paradise with our suggestions after the jump. And for more info on everything glamping, check out GlampingGirl.com.

Six Tips For Having An Unbelievable Staycation

how to have a staycation

Last weekend, while some of my friends were off on weekend trips to grand places like the Poconos and St. Louis, I was in the place you can generally find me: home. But, thanks to a little planning, I felt like I had traveled hundreds of miles away from my apartment and had a relaxing, indulgent two days.

Staycations have gotten a lot of hype lately since people have less money to spend on actual trips out of town, but I didn’t believe it was actually possible to have a vacation-like time while remaining in the city I call home. I proved myself wrong. After the jump, the five things I learned about going on a staycation.

Tripping Out: The Top 10 Dos And Don’ts Of Vacationing Together

Suitcases

After two and half years together and a few short domestic trips, my now-husband and I put our relationship to the test with a two-week jaunt through China. Sure, hiking the Great Wall, braving squatter toilets, and eating breakfast with chopsticks were all an adventure, but the real challenge of vacationing together was spending every minute together for 15 days straight. If you think your relationship is up to the test, do yourself (and him) a favor by following my hard-learned tips after the jump…

The Frisky Guidebook: The Mile-High City

Denver Guidebook

Maybe it’s the altitude. Or all the hard-bodied, active, young folks sauntering around. Or maybe it’s the fact that the city is exactly one mile high. Regardless, Denver has come into its own as a city that demands the nation’s attention (perfectly proven by the recent kick-ass DNC event). If you’re lucky enough to visit D-Town, don’t just hotfoot it to the mountains; take a few days to explore the city. Maybe you’ll be lucky enough to discover why the natives like to do it at 5,280 feet.

The Frisky Guidebook: The Holy City

Charleston, South Carolina Guidebook

Don’t let the old moniker fool you, what Charlestonians worship the most is a good party. At its busiest during wedding season and the summer months, this tourist town is worth visiting year-round with various festivals, galas, events and shows. The climate is often blessed with bouts of 70-degree weather in the dead of winter, ensuring that there is a party going on somewhere every single night of the week in any given month.

Montreal Guidebook

Only a few hours away from both New York City and Boston, there are always plenty of Americans visiting Montreal for its reputation as Canada’s Sin City, as well as for its fab European influence. With strip clubs and sex shops galore—not to mention the gay-friendly vibe, drag queens, French food, and beer with higher alcohol content—Montreal can easily intoxicate your senses. Here are some of our suggestions for a weekend jaunt to La Belle Ville.

Seattle’s got Starbucks, Microsoft, grunge, and yes, lots of rain. But it’s also got a whole lot more than that. There’s your standard tourist fare in the form of the Space Needle, Seattle Center and Frank Gehry’s monster of a museum, Experience Music Project, among others. But dig in a little deeper and you’ll find some hidden doors, some sultry sweet spots and some spectacular waterways. Here’s our guide to Seattle’s sexier side.

Skimpy Speedos Banned At UK Resort

Skimpy Speedos Banned At UK Resort

First, France bans topless sunbathing. Now this! OK, maaaaaaybe this is a publicity stunt, but Alton Towers, a UK resort with a bitchin’ water park, has banned guys from wearing Speedos and other tight swimming trunks. According to Yahoo, Speedos are now verboten in order to maintain a “family friendly” atmosphere and to “prevent further embarrassment among members of the public.” It’s unclear whether it’s the dignity of the Speedo-wearers or the gentle eyes of Speedo-oglers that the resort endeavors to protect. Alton Towers bosses recommended their male guests wear board shorts instead, and said skimpy skivvies are “more suited to Spain than Staffordshire,” which sounds like a ringing endorsement of Spain to me. Weird Fashion Museums Around The World

musee du slip

Fashion has long been a subject of analysis, and the concept of museums devoted to it isn’t new. However, more recently we’re seeing museums that present style in quirkier ways. The most recent of this bunch is the Musée du Slip (underwear museums) in Brussels, which showcases the underthings of mainly Belgian artists, singers, and politicians. After the jump, a selection of fashion museums from around the world, some awesome, some downright weird.

Reese Witherspoon and Jake

With Ashley Olsen and boyfriend, Justin Bartha, doing the sightseeing thing around Paris this week and actual summer weather finally upon us, it’s vacay season! So, do celebs rock tourist style in the same way as us “civilians”? Not really. If you’re thinking flat shoes, sneakers or a fanny pack—you won’t find ‘em on stars, no matter how perilous the cobblestone streets. (Example: Check out Jake and Reese in Paris dressed just as chicly as the locals.)

Confessions Of An Over-Packer

How To Pack For A Weekend Vacation

I sort of have a packing problem. In theory you don’t need all that much for a weekend away, it’s only two or three days after all. I always start out very organized and plan my outfits to save space by avoiding redundancy. This forces me to think of what I will need, and that’s where I go wrong. How can I possibly pack for all the potential occasions, weather, activities, meals? There so many possibilities I just can’t plan for. I don’t know where to begin, or more appropriately, I just don’t know where to stop. That’s why I am doing a serious inventory of what one actually needs for a summer weekend away… scratch that, what a slightly obsessive fashion lovin’ gal “needs” to pack for a weekend away.
