A few years ago, I heard a rumor about a female fight club on a college campus in North Carolina. I tried for months to find someone who was a member so that I could write a story about them, but I never got very far because, well, we all know the first rule of fight club. Turns out, I should have been talking to Drew Barrymore. In the new issue of Time Out New York, in addition to snapping some gorgeous photos of New York City, Drew sat down for an interview to talk about her directorial debut, the roller derby flick “Whip It.” Here’s what she had to say about the movie and the huge bruises all over her body.

“What I love about [roller derby] is that it’s real and high stakes. And by the way, it’s scary as sh*t to do. I wouldn’t have guessed that the first film I directed would have a sports element, but then again it doesn’t surprise me, because I love girls getting to do what boys do…We also had female fight club. We discovered at a bar one night that I definitely have that, like, feisty little boy inside of me, and when I drink he comes out.” [Time Out]

The gloves are off! Ashley Dupre, the high-priced escort who brought down former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, lashed out at other women in a blog post.

The Vanity Fair “Me and Mrs. Palin” article by Levi Johnston—which he appears to not have “written” so much as dictated to the editors—is the juiciest, gooeyiest, gossipiest smear I’ve ever sunk my teeth into. Did you know Sarah Palin wanted her and the First Dude to secretly adopt Bristol and Levi’s baby, Tripp, so no one would know her teen daughter had been pregnant?!?! Or that Cindy McCain offered to let Bristol and Levi marry at the White House if McCain won?!?! Allegedly.

But beneath all the gossip that supports the theory that, yes, these chuckleheads and their hunting gear are just as ridic as we’ve always thought they were, Levi (and the Vanity Fair editors who approved his piece) tells another story: Sarah Palin is a bad mother and wife. As much as I dislike the Alaskan ex-governor’s character as a politician, that particular story is not one that’s fair to tell.

We raised an eyebrow when Susan Sarandon and her daughter took a pole dancing class together. We shook our heads when Demi Moore took daughter Rumer to a strip club. But we are completely and totally scandalized by Traci Young, 39, and her daughter Tami Smith, 22, who used their mother-daughter bond as a gimmick to reel in johns in Philadelphia. The two posted ads on Craigslist, under the now-discontinued erotic services section, with the subject line, “Mother and Daughter Tag Team.” An undercover police officer responded to the ad and met the two women at their house, where they decided on the price of $200 smackeroos to have a threesome. Then he slapped handcuffs on them. The pair went on trial this week, and were just found guilty of prostitution. “It’s a messed up world out there and we have to do this just to get by,” Young told reporters. Yeah, I’d say so. Supposedly, disgraced former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer is considering another run for public office, and the mother of the call girl at the center of the scandal that brought down the “Love Gov” is speaking out. In an interview with the New York Post, Ashley Dupre‘s mother, Carolyn Capalbo, opined of Spitzer’s slow-but-steady career resurrection: “Only in America.” Dupre, in contrast, is “having a rough go”; surely, coming back from being outed as a sex worker who brought down a politician is no easy feat. A friend of Dupre pointed out that in this case the woman gets the short end of the stick: “The woman always ends up the filthy, marked whore and he ends up coming back the savior of politics.” Dupre may have gotten paid, but it seems she’s the one paying now. Now, the ousted beauty queen runner-up is suing Miss USA California pageant co-directors, Shanna Moakler and Keith Lewis, for slander, libel, public disclosure of private facts, intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress, and religious discrimination.

Holy creepy. Last night, Philip Garrido, the man who allegedly kidnapped Jaycee Lee Dugard, kept her in a compound in his backyard, raped her, and fathered her two children, called a reporter from jail. Finally, some good news to come out of this sad story: Phoenix police will pursue felony child abuse charges for the parents, Liberian refugees, who abandoned their eight-year-old daughter in July—after she was allegedly gang-raped by four boys—because they were ashamed.

The boys, ages 10 to 14, who are also Liberian refugees, allegedly lured the eight-year-old girl to a storage shed, by promising her chewing gum, where the alleged assault took place. When the parents learned their daughter had been raped, they apparently told police they did not want her to return home. She has been living in protective custody since the incident.

Ditching their kid is not the main reason police are pursuing abuse charges, however. According to the Associated Press, the young girl and her family have been referred to Child Protective Services in Phoenix five times since the girl was four years old. Altogether, past reports (including several times the young girl was found by neighbors or police to be wandering around the neighborhood by herself stealing or begging for food) could comprise felony child abuse. Let’s start Friday off on a happy/incredibly disturbing note, shall we? In 1991, Jaycee Dugard, 11, was kidnapped and presumed dead. This week, a woman walked into a police station in the Bay Area and told officers that she was Dugard, now 29. She had been kidnapped and kept a prisoner in the backyard of Phillip Garrido, a registered sex offender and religious fanatic, and his wife, Nancy. Garrido had raped her repeatedly over the years, fathering two children, now 11 and 15. Dugard and the girls were kept in tents and sheds in the Garridos’ backyard and police suspect that this week might have been the first time she or her children had left the compound. The three have since been reunited with Dugard’s family and the Garridos will be arraigned today. [LA Times]

Caster Semenya won the 800-meter race at the world championships last week, but the controversy surrounding her continues. A source close to the investigation of Semenya said the runner underwent tests before the start of the World Championship that revealed she had three times the normal female’s level of testosterone in her body. This could be natural, but the Telegraph reported that the head coach of the South African team was once accused of giving a female athlete so many anabolic steroids she was forced to have a sex-change operation and now lives as a man. The coach insists he hasn’t been involved with performance-enhancing drugs since 1989.

After that video of her nakey with Dr. McSteamy and the Noxzema Girl made the rounds on the internet last week, former Miss United States Teen-turned-Playboy -model-turned-(maybe?)-madam Kari Ann Peniche cut a deal with E! to do a two-part exclusive interview. However, over the weekend, she sat down for an interview with Steppin’ Out Magazine. What, you’ve never of it? Well, it’s only the #1 weekly entertainment magazine in New Jersey, people! With 140,000 weekly readers!

Rosemary Port, the blogger behind “Skanks in NYC,” is suing Google for $15 million for revealing her identity to model Liskula Cohen, whom Port called a “psychotic, lying, whoring ... skank” on the blog. Initially, Cohen was going to sue Port for defamation, but then she realized she knew this angry blogger and decided to call her up and sort things out without clogging up the legal system. We thought the whole saga was over. Until Port said, “I’m ready to take this all the way to the Supreme Court.”

Remember the J.C. Penny scandal of the week before last? Recap: New York Times style writer Cintra Wilson managed to offend the masses by calling Middle Americans fat, J.C. Penney shoppers fat, and even managed to insult their mannequins with the barb, “[J. C. Penney] has the most obese mannequins I have ever seen. They probably need special insulin-based epoxy injections just to make their limbs stay on.” She apologized for her behavior once with the rawtha dismissive: “You know I didn’t mean it that way, so please remove the knot from your panties and when you’re ready, join me for a cigarette and several Pucker martinis,” followed by a more “heartfelt,” “I very much regret that my J. C. Penney article in the Times caused any wounded feelings whatsoever, particularly to people who already feel they take more than their share of abuse from our very shallow and ridiculous society. I sincerely apologize.” Er, yeeaahhh…

Ever since Michael Jackson died, there’s been a steady stream of folks who have said that he was murdered, most of them bearing the last name Jackson. LaToya was quick to tell News of the World newspaper, “Michael was murdered. It was a conspiracy to get his money. We don’t think just one person was involved.” And a week before that, the King of Pop’s lawyer divulged to Life & Style, “He feared somebody wanted to kill him. He was even concerned people would kill him to somehow try to take control of the Beatles back catalog.”

It sounded far fetched. But it now looks like they could be right.

After alleged murderer and former “Megan Wants A Millionaire” contestant Ryan Jenkins was found hanging from a coat rack in a Vancouver motel room yesterday, the mother and ex-boyfriend of Jasmine Fiore, the woman he allegedly murdered, sat down on the “Today Show” to talk about this crazy mess. The ex, Robert Hasman, claims he didn’t know about Ryan, but said he’d been exchanging intimate messages and emails with Jasmine. In their last text, Jasmine supposedly told him she was coming to Las Vegas so the two could reunite.

Ryan Jenkins, the man wanted in the death of Jasmine Fiore—and a contestant on VH1’s “Megan Wants A Millionaire,” which has since been canceled—was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room. It’s believed he took his own life. Jenkins has been on the run from authorities, who wanted to speak to the man about the death of his wife. Fiore’s body was found in a dumpster, stuffed in a suitcase, without her teeth and fingers; her body was identified via her breast implants. All signs—including Jenkins’ evasion of police—pointed to her husband as the killer. [Vancouver Sun]
