Five Things To Know About Chrisette Michelle

Chrisette Michelle

R&B singer Chrisette Michelle‘s second album, Epiphany, tops the pop chart this week, despite selling a mere 83,000 copies, which is a record low for an album debuting at number one. Chrisette’s name was unfamiliar to me, but she’s been around the block and has worked with the biggest names in the music industry over the past couple years. Click through to learn more about the 26-year-old.

Who Is The Silly Boy Rihanna And Lady Gaga Are Singing About?

Rihanna and Lady GaGa Sing Silly Boy

Rihanna and Lady Gaga have paired up for a new song: “Silly Boy,” Do you think the lyrics could be about any particular silly boy?

Cause you had a good girl
That’s a keeper
You had a good girl but
Didn’t know how to treat her
So silly boy get out my face
Why do you like the way regrets taste?
So silly boy get out my hair
No, I don’t want you no more

What’s With Guys Wanting Women Who Don’t Speak?

This morning, I flew back to New York and caught up on my pop music by listening to the Top 20on20 on XM radio, the one perk Airtran provides. Most of the music was expected—Lady GaGa, Miley Cyrus, Black Eyed Peas—but I’d never heard one of the songs that made it into the top 20: “Don’t Trust Me,” by the Boulder, CO, band 3OH!3. At first, I thought it was pretty catchy. That is, until it got to this part of the song:

Shush girl, shut your lips
Do the Helen Keller and talk with your hips
I said, shush girl, shut your lips
Do the Helen Keller and talk with your hips

Maybe I’m overly sensitive, but I couldn’t believe a pop song with such offensive lyrics was a hit. Not only is it regularly played on XM’s 20on20, but it popped to number 13 on Billboard’s Hot 100. What do I find wrong with these lyrics? The band disrespects a historically honored woman who persevered despite limitations—she could neither hear nor see, and yet she made a difference in the world. And the lyrics imply the guys don’t want someone who talks. They want a woman without a mouth, who doesn’t speak and uses her body to communicate, rather than making any noise. Keep reading to listen to the song yourself.

Shut Up And Watch Katy Perry’s “Waking Up In Vegas” Video

The title of this song says it all. High-stakes gambling, luxury hotel rooms, sparkly clothes, and bright lights abound in this Sin City dream featuring a wide-eyed Katy Perry. Oh, and the song isn’t bad either.

Coachella: Where We Wish We’d Been This Weekend

For the past 10 years, the Coachella Music Festival has brought hundreds of thousands of panting people to Indio, CA to shake their moneymakers. [NY Times]. So, put on an ironic tee, grab a PBR, and climb on the shoulders of some dude you just met in Elvis Costello specs. It’ll feel just like being there, I promise.

After the jump, highlights from the festival, including Paul McCartney (dedicating his set to his dear departed Linda), Leonard Cohen, and M.I.A. glowing in the dark.

Mandy Moore’s A Heartbreaker (And A Ball-Buster)

Mandy Moore is a whole new woman these days. Not only is she a newlywed (her husband is musician Ryan Adams), but she has an album coming out May 26. The video for her first single, “I Could Break Your Heart Any Day of The Week,” is out, and after watching it, we’ll be very interested in hear her other new songs. While Mandy was über pop-tastic back in her early days, her last album, Wild Hope, was very folksy and more our speed. Has she gone back to a more “Candy”-like style, or has Ryan had an influence on her sound? I guess we’ll find out when Amanda Leigh hits stores next month.

Crave: Metric’s Fantasies

Metric Band New Release Fantasies Album

Dream girl/rocker Emily Haines, and her electronic indie rock outfit Metric have just released their new record, Fantasies. But all those things she imagined are now, four records later, more like Emily’s reality. And as a committed career gal, she still wants more! Fantasies was a year-and-a-half in the making because the band had been on the road for a long ass time and needed to, as Emily put it, “reconnect with our humanity.” However, from the sounds of tracks like “Stadium Love” and “Help I’m Alive,” it seems she got frustrated and bored with her own success and the men back home. So, if you’re looking for a friend who can dish dirt you can empathize with while making you want to shake it (off), Metric’s got your back! [$9.99, Amazon]

Crave: Jenny Owen Youngs’ “Led To The Sea”

Jenny Owen Youngs single

We don’t develop girl crushes on many women. In fact, we’re kind of picky about who gets our admiration, because not many possess smarts, looks, spunk, and silliness in one package. Jenny Owen Youngs meets our criteria, and we can’t wait for her album Transmitter Failure to come out next month. We snuck a listen, and the songs are fun without being fluffy, with witty lines we wish we’d said ourselves.

Download Jenny Owen Youngs’ song “Led to the Sea,” FOR FREE! The Led to the Sea EP is out now, and Jenny’s album Transmitter Failure hits stores May 26.

Eminem’s “We Made You” Video

Eminem’s “We Made You” video pokes fun at celebrities who have made headlines over the past couple years—Bret Michaels for his skanky love search, Jessica Simpson for her weight (should Em really be throwing stones?), Amy Winehouse for her yellow teeth and general cracked-out appearance, Lindsay Lohan for dating Sam Ronson, and Kim Kardashian for her huge booty. The video even features the star of “Nailin’ Palin,” a Hustler porno spoofing Sarah Palin. Obviously, Eminem has been reading tabloids and watching reality TV during his time off, but it’s all in good fun, or at least Kim Kardashian thinks so. “I think this video is so funny! I am a huge Eminem fan and find it flattering that he would rap about me,” said Kim. “He’s a bit harsh about some other celebrities, but you just have to let it go and have a sense of humor. Personally, I’m honored.” The video is rather hilarious, but the song isn’t that funny, entertaining, or catchy when you don’t listen and watch. It just sounds like the usual Eminem fare updated for 2009. Kudos to Dr. Dre for a banging beat, though.

Mind Of Man: Now Playing—Crappy Love Songs

Guy's Opinion On How Music Relates To Sex And Love Memories

I just can’t emotionally or physically connect with a woman unless there is some kind of terrible music playing.

When it comes to love and romance, timing is everything. There is so little choice when it comes to the fickle demands of your heart. And it’s the same with the music that serves as the soundtrack of your life. The songs you fall in love with pick you, not the other way around. There’s a reason the mythical symbol of love is a creepy flying baby who capriciously shoots arrows at random people, coupling them up. He is a stupid, bitter man-baby eternally blighted with an infants diddle.

Crave: Pearl Jam’s “Ten” Collector’s Edition

Pearl Jam's Ten Collector's Edition

Chances are, if you’re between the ages of 25-40, you owned Pearl Jam’s debut album Ten as a teenager or twentysomething. The album was released 18 years ago and to celebrate, the band is re-releasing the record, newly remastered, with bonus tracks, including “Brother,” “Just a Girl,” “2,000 Mile Blues” and “Evil Little Goat.” Out today, the deluxe version also comes with a DVD of previously unreleased 1992 Pearl Jam MTV Unplugged performance, an LP of the band’s 1992 “Drop in the Park” concert, and a replica of Pearl Jam three-song demo cassette with Eddie Vedder’s original vocal dubs, among other obsessive additions. The one letdown? They didn’t redesign the album cover artwork, which is possibly among the lamest in history. [$27.99 for the double disc CD plus DVD or $124.99 for the collector’s edition, Amazon]

Justin Timberlake Gets Manhandled By Ciara

We feel a little dirty watching so much gyrating this early in the morning, but what better way to wake up than by seeing Ciara and Justin Timberlake shake it in the video for “Love Sex Magic”? What do you think of Ciara’s style? We think she’s copping Beyonce’s look a little with all those unitards.

Crave: Hollywood, Mon Amour

Hollywood, Mon Amour

The French have an uncanny ability to take anything and make it chic—just think about how cute they look toting loaves of bread under their armpits! On Hollywood, Mon Amour, Nouvelle Vague producer Marc Colin takes songs from ‘80s movies—“Take my Breath Away” from “Top Gun,” “Don’t you Forget About Me” from “The Breakfast Club,” etc.—and has various singers record them in a way that sounds sexy but simple. After listening to Yael Naim’s rendition of “Flashdance What A Feeling,” you will never again associate that song with oversized, off-the-shoulder sweatshirts or Jennifer Beals’ fancy footwork. New Bat for Lashes Video: Daniel

A new video arrives from Bat for Lashes: “Daniel.” Directed by Johan Renck, who’s directed videos for Madonna and Kylie Minogue, it’s sort of in the same surreal vein as “What’s a Girl to Do?” A little bit Stevie Nicks, a little bit Bjork, the melancholy music vid stars Natasha Khan in tear-streaked makeup getting molested by a pack of black-clad freaks who look like they just escaped from an insane asylum in which everyone is forced to wear Gareth Pugh. It’s a pretty, sad love song—although why it ends with a Karate Kid reunion, I cannot fathom. The track is the first cut released from the upcoming Bat album, Two Suns. Do you love it or hate it? Shout out in the comments.

What Musicians In Formerly Popular Bands Do: Start A New Band

Tinted Windows

A lot of famous musicians have side projects because they’re just so creative that one band isn’t enough, i.e., Damon Albarn is in both Blur and Gorillaz, and Spencer Krug is in both Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown. Well, there’s a new band that’s made up of the most random mix of musicians—we think they must have been bored and looking for something to do since all of their bands peaked in the ‘90s or early ‘00s. Tinted Windows is made up of Taylor Hanson (Hanson), Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne), James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins), and Bun E. Carlos (of Cheap Trick), and their first record comes out next month. The initial idea to work together came when Hanson and Schlesinger met in the mid-‘90s, and they just kept adding members, I guess. The first single, “Kind of A Girl,” sounds like a Fountains of Wayne song being sung by Hanson. We think they should add a member of Soul Asylum or Goo Goo Dolls to the group, too.

Runway DJ: New York Fashion Week Music

model listening to iPod

Fashion Week isn’t just an event for seeing next season’s clothes and spotting celebs sitting front row. It’s also one of the best places to hear new music (and remember songs that you’d long forgotten). While live music was a huge trend for Fall 2009—Zac Posen had the 5 Browns playing five Steinway pianos on his runway, and Lissy Trullie and her band rocked Phillip Lim’s show—there were still awesome tunes blaring as models stomped down the runways last week. After the jump, listen to 15 of our favorite songs playing during New York Fashion Week.

Lily Allen Does More Than Get Photographed By Paparazzi

In the two years since Lily Allen released Alright, Still, the girl managed to get into a fight with Elton John, dye her hair blond, dye her hair black, dye her hair pink, get pregnant, have a miscarriage, have an affair with a married man, get help losing weight with hypnosis, and continue expressing herself on her blog. Oh, and she also made a new album. It’s Not Me, It’s You hits stores next Tuesday, but you can listen to the whole thing on Lily’s MySpace page. While it’s not as catchy as her first record, this album will help you get through today, at the very least. Just put on your headphones, and the weekend will be here before you know it.
