Louise Goldin For Topshop Will Put Your Eye Out

Louise Goldin

If these shoes are a question, the correct answer is yes. Jimmy Choo did H&M; now, Louise Goldin does Topshop. We love these studded pumps that look like porcupine spines for your feet. They come in chrome too and are a toned-down version of what Goldin’s models wore on the runway, sans crystals. We’ll take every color they’ve got, please. [MYKROMAG]

Amelia’s Style Diary: Wednesday

Amelia's Style Diary: Wednesday

What I’m Wearing Today:

  • Lorick Dress
  • Red Bird Cargidan/Vest
  • Club Monaco Blazer
  • Gold Chain Necklace (birthday gift!)
  • J.Crew Tights
  • J.Crew Shoes
  • Moscot Glasses

So, aside from the tights and dress (this one is by the designer who does Blair’s mom’s line on “Gossip Girl”), I am wearing the same outfit as Monday. I’m a creature of habit, y’all. Seriously, I just can’t not wear these shoes! They’re so cute and fancy and, also, all my other heels need to be resoled, so there’s that. Anyway, I decided to take it up a notch today, after yesterday’s slobfest. And I’m wearing my glasses more: A) because I love them and B) because I need to place a new order at 1-800-Contacts. Anyway, loving my outfit today. Very happy with it.

Fashion Scandal Du Jour: Underage Drinking On Shopbop!

OK, people, brace yourselves: There are kids who are drinking underage, probably all the time. We know, we know. How do we know? Because we watched this Stylecaster and Shopbop video of Manhattan socials Poppy Delevinge, Hayley Bloomingdale and Isabelle McNally getting ready for a night on the town (styled by Shopbop’s own fashion director Kate Ciepluch), and it starts with swigs of champers and involves some flip cup. Only problem is, Miss McNally is still a teenager. D’oh! Oh well, like we care. Plus, what’s that show the kids are wild about? The “Gossip Girl” thingie? Aren’t those fictional rich gals always downing martinis? Anyway ... In my day that was an after-school special. Now, not so much. [Shopbop]

Do High-End Boutiques Fashionably Discriminate?

Woman Robber

The other day, I went into a very exclusive boutique. You know, the kind with the all-glass front, and the man at the door who has to unlock the door for you, and the shoes start at $1,500 a pop and the dresses run into the tens of thousands. I wasn’t going in there just to be a lookie-loo, either. I was interested in buying a ring that they had in stock. Unfortunately, I got treated like a potential shoplifter. Is that right?

Is Madonna A Fashion Has-Been?

Photos of Madonna

I’ve noticed lately that many fashion magazines and blogs are referencing Madonna‘s style from eras past, as they’ve often done. Take, for instance, this mini photo spread from the October 2009 issue of InStyle, in which Madonna’s style influence is evident on three of today’s biggest pop stars—Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears. The only problem is the most recent look from Madonna that is reinterpreted is from 1994, which makes me wonder if anyone takes their fashion cues from her present style. Don’t get me wrong, Madonna is still fashionable, but is she also setting trends like she used to or is she simply following the fashion pack? Check out 10 of her recent looks, decide for yourself, and let me know your verdict in the comments. I’m sure you’ll definitely notice a color theme.

Hermes Is Not This Homeowner’s Favorite Luxury Brand

Hermes Is Not This Homeowner's Favorite Luxury Brand

Despite being a fan of plaid, I’ve never particularly liked Burberry’s signature print. But that’s OK, because the owner of this home, Norwegian artist Jens Werner Andersen, more than makes up for my lack of enthusiasm. [via Buzzfeed]

Gift Idea For The Literary Fashionista

Moby Dick Clutch

Well, or so we thought. Olympia Le Tan’s canvas, brass, felt and silk thread clutches feature first-edition covers of 21 different classics are certainly “different” and chic in the nerdiest way possible. (In fact, Tilda Swinton reportedly scooped one up.) Then we found out they cost $1500.00 each, and our collective jaws dropped. So, um yeah. [Inventor Spot]

Who Is CFDA Fund Winner Sophie Theallet?

sophie theallet

Winning the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund usually means a designer’s career is on the verge of becoming the next big thing. Last year, Alexander Wang took away the prize, and look at him—we can’t even afford to buy one of his jersey tanks. This year’s award goes to French-born designer Sophie Theallet, who started garnering a reputation for her feminine, floral dresses, especially after Michelle Obama wore one (call it the Mobama Bump).

Theallet is one of the few designers out there to really embrace multiculturalism and make it marketable. Her influences are extremely eclectic, but somehow seem to work together via classic French and Rykiel-esque color schemes, Native American-inspired headbands, and subtle African touches in bunching and billowy skirts. She also uses a diverse cast of models in each show, which definitely increases the collection’s worldly view. Click through to see some of Sophie Theallet’s designs! [WWD]

The Old-School Fashion Hierarchy Is Falling Down

Fashion Revolution

What would the fashion industry look like if it shrugged off the exclusivity that has characterized it for, well, centuries, and cut out the middleman? It seems like the process is already well underway. This year’s Fashion Weeks had everyone wondering the same thing, and the buzz is best summed up thusly:

“The shows during September and October were a first glimpse of what the elitist fashion world could soon become: a business where designers take their collections directly to customers, no longer filtered through fashion editors at glossy magazines and buyers at top stores.”

But does that really mean the end of old-school power players like, say, Anna Wintour and Joe Zee? [New York Times]

This Wolf Trend Has Really Taken Off

Daisy Lowe

Judging from oh, say, all those three wolf moon shirts that keep popping up all over the place, wolves are (still) hot, hot, hot right now! They must be if international “it” girl Daisy Lowe wore this fetching (har) hat to Rihanna’s “it” concert in London this evening. Being complete sheep (ha), we scoured the web in search of this cap, because we simply had to have it. So the bad news is we stumbled upon a few sort-of-but-not-really similar versions at Ecrater and, um, the Minnesota Historical Society, but go figure, they’re waaay too scary-looking. The good news is we finally started to wonder why the hell we were looking for a hat like this in the first place and stopped doing so immediately. Whew, that was a close one.

Frederick’s Of Hollywood Way Ahead Of Its Time In 1963

Frederick's of Hollywood 1963 catalog

We stumbled across the Frederick’s of Hollywood catalog from fall 1963 (don’t ask), and while looking through its pages, we came to the conclusion that even though some of us think Frederick’s sells tacky stuff nowadays, back in the ‘60s, the retailer was ahead of its time.

For example, the above page depicts a “high heel boot.” Sold for $19.99 a pair, the description of these shoes reads:

Get with the swing to the big fashion! The feline favorite, the high boot with the collar cuff that can be turned up or down. Glamorous almost 4” heel. Goes great at all sporty affairs. Soft Black Calf. Sizes 4 to 10, Med.

Today, shoes like these are known as “booties” or “shooties,” and they’re on everyone’s feet this fall. Did people think they were trashy back in ‘63? We don’t know, but maybe this means we’ll be into buffalo check halter dresses, currently available at Frederick’s, 30 years from now.

Amelia's Style Diary: Tuesday

What I’m Wearing Today:

  • Moscot Glasses
  • Gap Button-Down
  • J.Crew Jeans
  • J.Crew Shoes
  • J.Crew ring
  • Lucca Dog

So I’m working from home today, which has NOTHING to do with the fact that I went out for a big ol’ birthday celebration last night, oh no it doesn’t. This is what I wore, however, to walk my dog, Lucca, and to see my therapist. Yes, even the gold shoes. What? I love them.

Why Are These 10 Models So Valuable?

A list of the “10 Most Valuable Models of the Year” was just released by The Daily Beast. Though the compilers based it on everything from earnings to ad campaigns to magazine covers, we’re going to explain it on an easier scale: according to awesomeness.

Let’s start with the 10th most awesome model, Carolyn Murphy. She looks like your cool aunt, provided that your cool aunt is also ridiculously gorgeous. Murphy’s cache is a little more mainstream, but she’s definitely on the classiest possible end of mainstream. Love her.

You’ll Be One Stylish Present Wearing Kate Spade’s Bow Accessories

Kate Spade bow accessories

While some clothing companies sew sequins on a sweater and call it holiday attire, Kate Spade takes a more original approach, turning the classic bows that get stuck on top of presents into hair accessories, ballet flats, necklaces, and, our personal favorite, rings. These aren’t accessories you’d wear year-round, but it sure would be fun to bring them out every November through New Year’s—and maybe on our birthday, too.

Naomi Campbell Has A Kind Of Awesome Side

Naomi Campbell in Tanzania

For once, controversial supermodel Naomi Campbell is making headlines for something other than cell phone beatdowns. I don’t know how long she’s been involved in charity work (maybe it’s been overshadowed by her more notorious exploits), but evidently she visits Africa often and is the global ambassador for the White Ribbon Alliance, an international coalition for maternal health, which is holding its annual general meeting in Tanzania, where a woman dies in childbirth every hour. To raise money, she helped organize the Fashion for Relief charity featuring local designers, and gave a talk from the runway, which she used as a platform for another cause as well:

“Where do we see a woman of color in an advert? It’s quite blatant. There’s definitely space for more black models but has there been enough effort? It was getting better but it’s slipped back this year. Women of color who have had a great experience in life need to share their experiences with others. The world is not made up of blonde hair and blue eyes. We need to share ourselves.”

Maybe she hired some spin doctors to fix up her image, but we like this new direction for Naomi, as crusader of change for the fashion industry and doing important charity work. Hey, it worked for Angelina. [Daily Mail]

6 Tips For Wearing A Belt Well

Belted top and skirt

In the wake of last week’s belts slide show, we had a lot of readers asking exactly how to add a belt to an outfit without messing it up. Because we’ve been there and we love you, dear readers, we’ve got a few tips and tricks ...
