Lindsay Lohan’s Ungaro Debut Is An Epic Fail

lindsay lohan at ungaro paris show

“Shocking” is how the fashion world described Emanuel Ungaro’s Lindsay Lohan-influenced Paris runway show (and they didn’t mean it in a good way). Ever since the announcement of the actress’s appointment as creative adviser to the high-fashion house, everyone’s been loving to hate on the decision. And true, Miss Lohan does easily lend herself to criticism, not just because of her past, but also because of her valley girl knowledge of fashion, which The New York Times didn’t even need to comment on to capture:

“This is just so cool,” Ms. Lohan said, turning her attention to a white minidress splattered with sequins. “It needs more rhinestones, just so it pops.” Off to the seamstress it went. Pointing to another white dress, she said: “I call it Michelle Pffeifer in ‘Scarface.’ I was just in my office sketching for next season. I was here until, like, one o’clock last night.”

But the creatives at Ungaro knew what they were doing when they hired LiLo for the job, even admitting they were looking for sensationalism. In a way, it’s smart, because Ungaro gave fashion editors a golden opportunity to do what they love best: criticize. For the most part, they hated on the looks—loud sequined jackets worn shirtless with sparkly pasties, pop pink bandage dresses, and bandeau tops with bright, billowy pants. Yet we gotta say ... it could have been worse. Way worse. Seriously, if you’re going to talk about bad, you might want to start with the garish Jean-Paul Gaultier. Lindsay Lohan: Fashion & Social Media Expert

Lindsay Lohan, working hard

Lindsay Lohan seems to consider herself somewhat of a social media expert and has now found a new use for Twitter. She’s been sending out Fashion Week invitations to the Ungaro show in under 140 characters.

To catch you up a bit on the Lindsay craziness, here’s a recap: despite the woes and complaints of the fashion industry, Emanuel Ungaro went ahead and hired Lindsay Lohan as an artistic advisor for the brand. She showed her diva attitude during Fashion Week in New York, moving around seating cards, and even made her new bosses angry when she missed a press call with the Wall Street Journal and decided to not pose for pictures at Fashion’s Night Out. We hate to say we told you so Ungaro, but well, we told you so.

Fashion Elite: Monkey See, Monkey Do

fashion crowd

Just because fashion editors are at the tippy-top of the new style food chain, watch as the newest and latest looks stroll down the runway and claim fashion is always “individual,” doesn’t mean they don’t jump on trend bandwagons like the rest of us. Want proof? Street style blog Streetpeeper witnessed so many Christopher Kane tops (both the high-end line and the Topshop versions!) this past London Fashion Week, he was moved to do some hilarious Photoshopping, above. Fashion folk sure are loving their Christopher Kane—as is Rihanna. [Streetpeeper]

The Fashion Peacekeepers: Rachel Bilson

Rachel Bilson

Sometimes we feel like Us Weekly‘s “The Fashion Police” and other similar style critics can be a tad harsh. Also, they tend to have these really boring, conservative styles and we have to wonder what their real fashion credentials are. (Case in point: US Weekly‘s “Top Cops” include random comedian Stefanie Novik and Chet Cannon of “The Real World, Brooklyn.” When did they ever go to design school!?) The Fashion Peacekeepers are here to say, hey, can’t everyone’s styles just get along?

So the Fashion Police have a bone to pick with Rachel Bilson, seen here attending the Salvatore Ferragamo fashion show in Milan, asking what’s up with this “funky dress” and dissing her “lace gloves.” Here’s where we stand on the matter: Bilson is a total hottie who can get away with fashion murder, and we think it’s refreshing to see a well-tailored suit that shows off her figure in a more subtle way, as opposed to the usual starlet in flashy strapless bondage dress look. The gloves are actually part of the sheer shirt she’s wearing underneath, and it looks edgy and modern to let longish shirt sleeves peep out from a jacket. In short, back off you prosecutors, this woman is innocent.

Sweatpants Are Suddenly Cool

Alexander Wang Spring 2010 show

From Alexander Wang to Marc by Marc Jacobs, something rather odd happened on the spring 2010 runways during Fashion Week: Sweatpants became cool again. Whether we’re talking fleecy material dresses or actual sweats, they were everywhere and looked much more fashionable and much less Juicy Couture. As lovers of cool-looking comfort clothes, we fully approve of this move towards clothing that allow us to breathe just a little. [CBS News]

How To Rock A Headscarf A La The Marni Runway

marni milan fashion show

While designers in New York and London were sculpting elaborate hairdos this year at Fashion Week, Marni went the opposite route by covering it all up—just goes to show you that you that sometimes revealing less is sexier. At the designer’s summer 2010 runway show in Milan, models sported bright, printed headscarves and chunky jewelry, giving off a jet-set vibe that we’re dying to try out ourselves. While it’s probably not a look you can wear to the office (unless you have a casual/stylish work zone like The Frisky does!), a Marni-inspired headscarf style would be great for weekend wear (bring on the large sunglasses) or going out (we’re thinking skinny jeans, a clutch, and some vintage jewelry).

Find out how to wrap it up after the jump!

Milan Fashion Week Wrap-Up

milan fashion week photos

Milan Fashion Week is finishing up, and then it’s off to gay Paree. If you were suffering from fashion fatigue this week, here’s a cheat sheet to what the critics had to say:

  • NYT fashion scribe Cathy Horyn was none too pleased with Milan’s presenters, singling out Dolce & Gabbana for “cafe curtain lace” corsets, Marni for “Dr. Seuss characters,” and, “Heavy on beige, Karl Lagerfeld’s boudoir show for Fendi made you think a giant pair of old pantyhose had fallen over Milan.” Ooh, burn. Lucite Is A Contagious Disease That’s Spreading From Heels To Toes

clear toenails at Prada spring 2010

While generally reserved for strippers, Lucite heels might break into the mainstream thanks to their presence on the Prada runway and in Maison Martin Margiela’s collection. But the ones we’ve seen are pricey—to the tune of a grand and more—and some would say they still look cheap.

So, if clear heels aren’t your thing, you can still jump on the see-through bandwagon. There are always clear accessories or clear nails, the latter which was at Prada’s spring 2010 show and seems to be on the forefront of transparent since we certainly haven’t seen them before.

Not to be confused with nude nails or ones painted with clear polish, transparent nails are clear extensions that go atop normal nails. They sort of resemble when we put pieces of Scotch tape on our hands at a very young age. While Miuccia Prada designs clothes that launch trends, we’re not sure who’s going to get behind this one. Maybe the people who are already into Lucite heels? [British Vogue]

Pam Anderson Is (Still) A Lovable Hot Mess

    Pam Anderson and Richie Rich

Vivienne Westwood isn’t the only designer who is looking to Pamela Anderson as a muse. Heatherette designer and legendary NYC club kid Richie Rich, seen here in skates (you’ve heard of models falling, now designers are wiping out, too), teamed up with Pam to create an eco-line called A.Muse. The two decided to debut it during New Zealand Fashion Week, and Pam really went out of her way to show the entire collection, including her ass cheeks, after the jump!

Fashion Week Runway Moments That Channel Disney Characters

    Fairytale runway looks

No matter how grown up you are now, don’t even try to tell us you weren’t full-on obsessed with at least one Disney character way back when. The thing is, you hit your teens and all of a sudden it was “weird” that you were still dressing up as Little Red Riding Hood. (Or so I was told.) But a handful of designers are clearly sick of the stigma attached to dressing like you’ve just left the set of a Disney movie. Designer Christopher Kane, for example, marched the perfect little gingham dress down the runway, channeling “Alice in Wonderland” but cooler. Refinery29 rounded up a few more look-alikes, after the jump. [Refinery29]

Will Fashion Become Virtual For The Masses?

    Burberry Spring 2010

Fashion Week is a generally an invite-only occasion. Shows like Marc Jacobs are impossible to get in to even for celebrities, and the lines for the chicest parties are astronomically long. So usually, unless you’re in the industry or uber A-list, being a part of it all entails stalking blogs and Twitter for information on the designer’s latest collections and all the late night party details.

But change is in the air! There have been a few advancements recently in opening the insidery world of fashion to the world.
