The Worst Library Books Ever

Awful Library Books

Two librarians from Michigan, Mary and Holly, have given us yet another website to make Tuesday mornings at the office completely unproductive. Their blog, Awful Library Books, documents the ridiculous books that you find year after year in the $1 bin at your local library’s annual book sale. I laughed hysterically when I saw a hardcover with the title More Great Pantyhose Crafts. The most ridiculous part, aside from the fact that you can make a full-sized hammock from stockings, is that the word “more” is in the title, which implies that there was a volume preceding this one.

Washington Post’s New Video Blog: Are You Inspired By Street Style, Too?

Washington Post Scene It Style Video Blog

These days, I get more ideas about what to wear from watching people on the street or looking at blogs that document the clothes of everyday people than from looking at high-concept photo shoots in fashion magazines. The Washington Post has caught on to this trend and gone all Sartorialist on us by shooting videos around D.C. of attractive, well-dressed people talking about what they’re wearing for its “Scene In” series. Personal style is so hard to define and categorize, so the descriptions people come up with are pretty wild, i.e., “What inspires my style—India, Pakistan, the ocean, my mother, my great-grandmother, Kenya, Ethiopia, Mexico…” Watch the video, and you tell us: Do you prefer your style inspiration served up by celebrities and models in magazines, or real people on the street? Claudia Kishi, Style Icon

What Claudia Wore Blog

Hilarious nostalgic blog alert! “What Claudia Wore” discusses in great detail the fashion choices of Claudia Kishi, as depicted on the covers of one of my favorite young adult book series of all time, The Babysitters Club. Kim, the blogger behind “What Claudia Wore,” is totally obsessed with Claudia’s style, as I think all of us book nerds were during the ‘80s. Claudia, who was Japanese, artsy, and addicted to candy, had some of the most fashion forward outfits of all time, which Kim discusses both via the descriptions in the books as well as the book cover illustrations. She also critiques the other babysitters’ outfits, from Kristy’s affinity for sweaters over turtlenecks, Dawn’s love of the “Texas Tuxedo” (that’s denim-on-denim, y’all), NYC gal Stacy’s pre-“Gossip Girl” attempts at prep, and all of the various looks that would totally be sold at Urban Outfitters in 2009. Some of the more hilarious commentary, after the jump…

Check This Out: Passive Aggressive Notes

passive aggressive notes

It’s one thing to write a passive aggressive note. It’s doubly passive for the recipient to then post the note online. And yet it makes for wonderful entertainment, thanks to PassiveAggressiveNotes.com, a blog showcasing the best in annoying, written interactions. Some of the goodies include a letter written on Hello Kitty paper that reads, “Hi neighbors! You smoked us out with your barbeque right under the bedroom window.” That’s fairly pleasant compared to some of the meaner posts, like a note written to office workers: “Attention to whoever is fond of taking my things!!!! Well I don’t remember signing any bond/contract with anyone to have access to my things!!!” Sheesh! [PassiveAggressiveNotes.com]

Check Out This Site: Nerd Boyfriend

Nerd Boyfriend Website

Steve Urkel would have you thinking that he was pretty much born with suspenders and thick-rimmed glasses. Yet, the truth is, nerd style, like the disheveled hipster look, is carefully cultivated. Now, there’s NerdBoyfriend.com, a website that features pictures of dorky (yet famous) dudes, along with style suggestions on how to get those looks.

We know your guy’s been lusting after Steve Martin’s camel hair blazer and Bob Dylan’s glasses. He need look no further. You’ll find looks for well-knowns like George Harrison, Christopher Walken, and the band Kraftwerk. Mostly, we’re loving the site for the photos. Keep talking nerdy to us. [NerdBoyfriend.com]

Look At This F**king Hipster

Dumb Pictures Of Hipsters

File this in the “why didn’t I think of it first?” folder: Look At This F**king Hipster is a hilarious new blog that pokes fun at everyone’s favorite brand of poser. With their absurd sense of style and their even more ridiculous sense of entitlement, hipsters are sort of like your favorite animal at the zoo. It’s not like you’d ever want to be stuck in a cage with them — or at a party, for that matter — but they’re pretty fun to point and gawk at, which is why this blog is all kinds of brilliant. Saving you the annoyance of having to actually deal with these badly dressed trust fund kids yourself, or giving you an outlet an outlet if you do, Look At This F**king Hipster posts photos of real-life hipsters in and out of their natural habitat. From subway platforms to house parties, they bring their collective brand of irony everywhere they go, making themselves the perfect target for caption like this: “Someone told me there’s going to be a rodeo over at Barcade tonight.” [via Scanner]

Who Should Be The New NonSociety Girl?

Yesterday, a breaking news item of epic importance tore its way across the blogosphere. Mary Rambin, the blond, bebobbed, bubbly third portion of the NonSociety crew, was leaving the fold. After we picked ourselves up off the floor, wiped away our tears, and told ourselves everything really would be OK if we just prayed a lot, we started wondering who would be fit to replace the Rambin. It’s hard to imagine someone else filling her overpriced shoes, and be as devoted to live blogging their colon cleansings with such vim, such vigor. But we persevered. After the jump, the top 10 contenders for who should replace Mary on NonSociety, even though she can never be replaced in our hearts.

A Blogger-Commenter Union Gives Us Hope

A blogger is marrying one of her regular commenters.

Since a lot of us spend our free time updating our Facebook status, Tweeting, reblogging Tumblr posts, and keeping up with the world online, it can be hard to connect with people in real life. But from time to time, online activity can lead to relationships with real, live humans. On Sunday, the New York Times profiled a blogger-commenter romance in the Style Section. True love comes to those who comment!

F**k Yeah, Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling Tumblr Blog

We’ve posted about amazing Tumblr blogs that we love before, but I have a new favorite that’s obviously a little particular to my tastes. F*ck Yeah! Ryan Gosling posts random photos of my hunk of burning love with hilarious smooth come-ons like, “Hey girl, I heard you like beards so I grew one last night,” “Hey girl, I heard you like songs so I wrote you one,” and “Hey girl, when I tackle some body I think I’m giving you the biggest hug ever.” The genius behind the blog THAT I SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF, also posts for F*ck Yeah! Anne Hathaway, which is funny, but not nearly as sexy.

Coco Rocha Has A Blog

Coco Rocha

Model of the moment Coco Rocha has a blog: Oh So Coco. The 20-year-old, Toronto-born model, who once famously Irish stepdanced down Jean Paul Gaultier’s runway, offers a peek behind the scenes at days in the life of a fashion plate. She hopes a woman on the street who takes her photograph, sans makeup, has Photoshop, posts a video of herself dancing around while brushing her teeth, and reveals that Vogue had the exclusive rights to her new red hair, so she had to keep it under wraps until the January issue hit the newsstands. For other fashion icons online, check out Chanel Iman‘s YouTube channel and Hedi Slimane‘s diary. [The Cut]

10 Tumblogs To Follow

10 Tumblogs To Follow

Tumblr is the awesome blogging platform out there right now. Unlike Typepad or Blogger, you don’t need to know a lick of HTML to post thoughts or images onto your own blog from your computer or phone. Best of all, it also allows you to follow other Tumblr bloggers via your dashboard, similar to the way you’d follow websites you like via an RSS feed. Even if you just want a place to post your favorite photos for friends and family to see, or compile favorite quotes, Tumblr makes it idiot proof, and the more bloggers you follow on your dashboard, the more cool information, pictures, and articles you’ll discover. After the jump, some of my favorite Tumblogs to follow.

Five Sex Writers Who Get Us Off

Five Sex Writers Who Get Us Off

Tracy Clark-Flory wrote an interesting piece for Salon’s Broadsheet this week about the increasing number of sex writers facing termination at major newspapers and websites like Fleshbot and the Village Voice, saying, “These are scary times for sex writers.” Our own Susannah Breslin says, “Sometimes people become sex writers because they screw a lot, not necessarily because they can write well.” With that in mind, we’ve compiled a short list of some sex writers who DO write well and should be on your radar, recession lay (offs) be damned!

Diablo Cody Rips Blogosphere A New One

Diablo Cody

Stripper turned Academy Award-winning “Juno” screenwriter Diablo Cody has returned to ranting on her MySpace page, and this one’s a doozy. After she climbed out of Midwestern obscurity to win an Oscar, work with Spielberg, and garner the attention of the international media, the former blogger found herself a target for those who didn’t appreciate her writing abilities, her pole dancing skills, or her ascent to the top of the Hollywood pile.

What Would Mad Men’s Joan Holloway Do?

Joan from Mad Men

Now you can take more than style tips—kudos to the genius person who set up the blog “What Would Joan Holloway Do?”, answering oh-so-cerebral reader questions from the redhead’s fictional perspective. Our favorite so far:

How do you deal with a hysterical co-worker? There’s one woman in my office that is always running off to the powder room to sob. I don’t know her, so I feel strange asking her what’s wrong.

You do nothing, sister. Keep your trap shut and your eyes open. The last thing you need to do is show the office that you’re best pals with the tearful girl who can’t keep a secret.

The Washingtonienne Comes To HBO

The Washingtonienne

Did you guys ever read the book The Washingtonienne? I didn’t, because I listened to the book on tape. Anyway, The Washingtonienne was a book based on the anonymous blog written by Washington, D.C. political aide, Jessica Cutler a few years back, which detailed her sexual exploits with various high-powered political types (lots of times for money and gifts), including a state Representative or something. Anyway, it was slutty and juicy and had lots of sex in it, including anal. So yeah! HBO has green-lit a pilot! Produced by Sarah Jessica Parker! Which means it will totally be a DC-based Sex And The City rip-off only with more butt sex. Can’t wait. [Variety and Amazon]

I Am Neurotic And So Are You!

I’ve thought for a very long time that I have some sort of O.C.D. because I can’t function during the day if my bed is unmade and can spot a dust bunny from 20 feet away. But then I heard about this site, i am neurotic, where people submit examples of their own wakcy neurosis, and realized I am totally pretty normal. But wow, do people have funny, interesting little things they have to do in order to remain sane during their every day lives, like:

  • “I cannot poop if my shirt is all the way on. I have to put one arm out of my sleeve, and put that side of my shirt on my shoulder. I also find it hard to poop with my shoes on, and will take them off if I’m at home. If I’m out and about I will suffer through the shoe thing, but not the shirt.”
