Dracula Therapy Is The Scariest Anti-Aging Treatment We’ve Ever Heard Of

Daily Mail

Warning: for those who are squeamish about needles, blood, or both, this beauty treatment is definitely not for you. So please, carry on, and we’ll catch you later. For the “True Blood” lovers or facial-happy folks, prepared to be intrigued. The latest in anti-aging treatments, according to the Daily Mail, is what’s referred to as “Dracula Therapy,” where a doctor draws your blood, extracts minerals from it, and injects it back into the skin on your face with dozens of pricks. The supposed result? Disappearance of fine lines, improvement of skin tone, and rejuvenated skin. Sounds like something straight out of a horror movie, right?

Scientists’ Study Of Twins Confirms What We Already Knew About Looking Younger Longer

wrinkled face

Science reveals common sense to be fact! A study conducted by Dr. Bahman Guyuron and published in The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal researched the appearance of aging twins to determine why one half of the pair would be protected by time while the other would become wrinkled. While the side-by-side slide shows can be shocking, the reasons behind the wrinkles are exactly what your mama warned you about. Keep reading to find out how some of the twins stayed young-looking:

Gadzooks, We’re Putting Our Makeup On Backwards!

makeup application

So, picture it, I’m putting on my makeup last night (fascinating right?)—mostly doing the same, exact thing I do every freaking time. Clearly, I need to change up my “look”—but that’s a whole different post. Anyway, the application order goes something like this: Clarins Flash Beauty Balm, concealer, bronzer/powder, eyeliner (I’m way into navy liner these days), mascara, blush and lipgloss. No deviation whatsoever. Apparently, I’m a bit in the wrong—you are supposed to do your eyes before everything else, even your foundation/concealer, or so says makeup artist Kate Lee (she’s glammed up every Hollywood starlet from Anne Hathaway and Keira Knightley to Diane Kruger and Sienna Miller): “I like to do the smoky eye before starting any other makeup. That way, if you accidentally get a little bit of eyeshadow on your face, you don’t end up ruining your foundation or powder.” Interesting. What about you gals, do you have a make-up application formula? It looks like mine is sort of all wrong. [Teen Vogue]

Taking Halloween As Seriously As A Wedding

Taking Halloween As Seriously As A Wedding

I love Halloween. I want to believe that everyone loves Halloween—like it’s a universal Tim Burton-style Christmas—and that we all come together, unified, for the sake of weirdness and costumes, zombies, vampires, princesses, and gore. I’m torn, though, on whether I love it enough to take Vogue‘s costume suggestions. For the haute couture undead look that’s all the rage, they suggest booking a professional stylist. The people of MAC, Sephora, Nars, or Henri Bendel will make you fabulous for a price. Some of these ghastly makeovers run over $200. I didn’t even spend that much for my wedding up-do! Silly and frivolous or the expensive style solution for the biggest dress-up day of the year? What’s a ghoul to do?

Snoreplasty: The New Injection To End Snoring

injection

Girls don’t snore, right? (Wink.) But your guy probably does. For those with snoring problems, there’s a frightening new solution—an injection treatment called “snoreplasty,” which can supposedly replace surgery for those who wish to solve their severe snoring issues (or, at least, appease the women they’re torturing on a nightly basis). The shot, currently available in England, is done under local anesthetic, and targets the roof of the mouth. The compound is a “hardening agent” which prevents vibration in the nasal passageways. While the injection sounds pretty suspect and a little nasty, snoreplasty is apparently cheap, only 3 GBPs (about $5), and it takes only two minutes to administer. Whaddya think? Wanna sign the man friend up? (Or, um, someone else you know?) [Marie Claire]

Beauty Trend We Heart: Flecked Nail Polish

Flecked nail polish

If you have an unbearable case of nail ennui, here’s the cure: flecked nail polish. Deborah Lippmann has been leading this trend with her 10th Anniversary Set, which contains three bedazzled shades (red, copper and black), and her holiday shades (multi-colored Happy Birthday (left) and silvery Marquee Moon), $18 each. Kinda spendy but we love the look—it’s chunkier and less precious than glitter, and an unexpected touch when paired with winter tweeds and thick sweaters. [Beauty Snob]

Beauty Test Drive: Bliss Ingrown Hair Eliminating Pads

Bliss ingrown hair eliminating pads

Aside from being unsightly, ingrown hairs are actually kind of uncomfortable. And sneaky. What are those hairs doing growing back into our follicles anyway? We don’t like it. Apparently, Bliss feels the same way and sells these alpha and beta hydroxy-based Ingrown Eliminating Pads. Swipe them over your problem spots daily and you’ll notice a legitimate improvement in a few days. Seriously. Couple the pads with loofah-ing in the ingrown areas and those telltale red bumps will disappear entirely in a couple of weeks. [$38, Bliss, Sephora]

What I Want Now: Super-Shiny Hair

Courteney Cox

OK, here it is: I am dying, dy-ing for super shiny hair. Maybe it’s because the weather’s turning cold and depressing and it’s only October, maybe it’s because I’m not feeling all that purdy these days, or perhaps it’s because I just came across this photo of Courteney Cox and can’t stop obsessing over her freaking super-glossy hair. (Um, not to mention Charlize Theron’s hair these days—yeah, perfection.) I don’t know. But what I do know is I want. I need. How do I get? Let’s see…

Free Teeth Whitening (For Your Facebook Photos At Least)

whiten it on facebook

It’s like red-eye corrector but for your yellow teeth! According to a recent study (via Teen Vogue) white teeth actually make you hotter (no, uh, kidding), confident and more likely to get hired (legit, yo). So, let’s get us some pearly whites—at least the after-the-fact photo kind! Did you know Crest has a Facebook tool that instantly whitens up your teeth in photos? It’s called the Whiten-Up! app, and it’s high time we all start bleaching it up. Check out what it looks like, above. It’s pretty easy to do, but just don’t go too white—no one wants to have glowing teeth. [Crest Whiten-Up!]

Jessica Simpson Braves Swine Flu Hotbed In The Name Of Beauty

Jessica Simpson and Ken Paves

Poor Jessica Simpson! First she had to sleep between not one, but two nets to keep the bugs out of her bed in Uganda, and now she has risked her life for her new show, “The Price of Beauty.” Here is a Twitpic the singer posted of her and BF hairstylist Ken Paves at the airport departing for India. See how happy and blissfully unaware they are about what horrors they might encounter upon their arrival? The same day they landed in Bollywood to film a segment for the reality program, Indian health officials announced that over 13,000 people are infected with swine flu. Still, brave Jessica and Ken soldiered on, and as of press time, neither one has contracted the illness. The price of beauty, indeed. (Am I the only person who kind of can’t wait to see this show? Quite possibly, yes.) [Examiner]

$10,000 Buys You A Lifetime Of Not Smelling Like The Joneses

$10,000 Perfume

Sure, in a perfect world, our favorite fragrance would be all our own. It would be an exclusive scent that smells like no other, and when we left a room, people would say, “Oh, it still smells like her,” and sigh wistfully. (For that matter, no one would have the same H&M dresses either, hate that.) Sadly, that privilege isn’t exactly realistic when you consider that L’Artisan Parfumeur is selling that very exclusivity to the tune of $10,000. For that low, low price, you can purchase one of eight new couture fragrances that comes with a “certificate of authentication,” and twelve bottles of various sizes. You may also opt to purchase another bottle for $450 at some point during your lifetime, and can will the certificate, or “ownership,” of the scent to your heirs. Personally, if I was rich and decided to blow 10 grand on some perfume, I would kind of want some say in choosing what it smelled like. But then again I’d probably be too lazy busy eating bonbons in bed sooo .... [Stylelist]

Ageism Campaign Wants You To Embrace Wrinkles

wrinkle billboards

Being wrinkly makes you interesting? And here we’ve been obsessing about wrinkle creams and anti-aging beauty products, thinking that getting old is a big downer. This ad campaign, called “See The Person, Not The Age,” recently launched in Scotland and aims to fight ageism through wrinkled-up billboards that display slogans like these: “This is proof you can still have wrinkles and do a good job” and “Why don’t you notice people with wrinkles too?”

Could wrinkles ever really be thought of as “beautiful”? Why not? If this prevents just one person from feeling pressured to get Botox, it’s a very good thing. Why do wrinkles have to be so stigmatized anyway? What do you think of this campaign? Progressive? Or did you just wrinkle your nose? [StyleFrizz.com]

The Ultimate In Halloween Face Masks

Halloween make-up

So, I’m late to this train, but apparently, every year, MAC Cosmetics asks their artists from around the world to submit their fantasy Halloween makeup looks that can be recreated for you and me. (Sort of a great way to put in minimal effort on the Halloween front—they paint your face and you throw on those randy cat ears you’ve still got kicking around from last year. An instant getup!) Check out a video on how they put together the makeup sheets, like the one above, into actual faces, on real-live people—after the jump!

Major Beauty Dilemma: Bug Bites Vs. Zits—Help!

mosquito

I woke up this morning with two bug bites on my face. Yeah, my face. Not to be a negative Nelly, but c’mon—as if I don’t have enough other “challenges” to getting a zit-free face, now I’ve got two big, red mosquito bites that look like hellacious pimples to contend with? Great. (Also, it’s almost winter; how are mosquitos still alive? And why are they still buzzing around?) Here’s my dilemma: One of the bites is right next to my nose looking like an angry pimple, so I want to get it tamed ASAP. How do I do that? My first thought, no picking at it or scratching—I could end up with a scar. A few of my other mosquito bite tactics? After the jump ....

Beauty Test Drive: Ellen Sirot Hand Perfection Nail And Cuticle Treatment

Beauty Test Drive Ellen Sirot Hand Perfection Nail And Cuticle Treatment

I have the kind of cuticles that look dry and ragged a day or two after a manicure, and my cracked knuckles sometimes look as if I walk like a gorilla. Despite my best efforts to re-apply lotion after washing my hands and sleeping with my hands slathered in Vaseline and covered with moisturizing gloves, my hands never quite achieve hand model-level beauty. Every winter I’m on a quest to find a miracle in a bottle or tube that will give me soft, weather- and life-proof hands, but spring usually rolls around before that ever happens.

This year, though, I’ve gotten a head start and I think I might have even won the race. For a week now, I’ve been using the Ellen Sirot Hand Perfection Nail and Cuticle Treatment. It contains omega-3 fatty acids to lessen moisture loss, vitamins A and E to neutralize damage from free radicals, caprylic (derived from coconuts) to moisturize, and rosemary and lavender extracts as an antiseptic. I noticed smoother and more supple cuticles after the first application, and the results only improved as I applied the Nail and Cuticle Treatment at least three times a day or whenever I thought about it. I didn’t even follow-up religiously with the Night Solution for Hands, but can report that my hands now feel nourished and toned, too. While I’m happy with the results of the cuticle treatment, I’m not sure if I’d spend $22 on it and forget the $75 for the Night Solution. What do you do for dry hands?
