Magnetic Attraction Makes For Good Dating ... And Skin Care?

Ildi Pekar

When it comes to facials, our interests have run the gamut from bird poop to beer. Yet, most of these treatments seem more salable on their weirdness factor than their efficacy. The latest to cross our paths is the “Iron Mask” facial offered by Ildi Pekar Skin Care in New York City, that incorporates magnets to suck dirt out of your pores. The intriguing process might be the best facial we’ve ever had.

The treatment gets complicated with about a dozen products applied to your face in a one-hour period (including a variety of essential oils, lotions, and tonics), but the crux of the experience is the maschera al ferro, a pure iron mask that’s massaged into your skin. It feels surprisingly rich and smooth. The facialist then takes a magnet to the material, which removes the iron particles because of the opposite charge, extracting dirt and dead skin with it. You can actually look at the magnet afterward to see the waste, which you may find gross, but we found astounding. The best part is that there’s very little extraction, which in normal facials, can leave you red for days. Meaning you can go out the same night, and have luck with attraction of your own. Blue Nails: Love It Or Loathe It?

Summer Trend Blue Nail Polish

A few years ago, we all fell hard for Chanel’s black nail polish. Celebs started sporting this goth color and soon it spread faster than the H1N1 virus. But can they cause another nail craze again? Come summer, most of us turn to bright pinks, corals and reds when we head into the nail salon (if we head in at all); however, this summer may be different…Read More

Beauty Tips For Stealing The Bride’s Show

Kate Bosworth at Met Ball

You can’t wear a white dress to a wedding. It’s just not a subtle enough method for stealing the show. Turn up at the ceremony wearing a floor-length cream silk number, and suddenly everyone’s muttering insults about how you’re the “Inappropriate One.” Instead, walk in looking a level of gorgeous that diverts attention without being completely trashy. Kate Bosworth’s Met Ball hair and makeup (and dress) absolutely slaughtered the competition, and we show you how to steal her look after the jump.

O.P.I. Permanent Manicure Creates A Whole Other Nail Problem

OPI Axxium Soak Off Gels

I feel so ladylike and put-together when I have a fresh manicure, but that same polish job makes me feel like a sloppy slacker when it chips a few days later. I’ve tried a couple of things to solve this problem. I was a dedicated daily re-applier of Nail Tek Xtra, but then I got a life. Now I’ve settled on boring light colors that make peeling polish less noticeable, along with Creative Nail Design’s Stickey Base Coat. I was really excited when I read about O.P.I.‘s Axxium Soak-Off Gels, a permanent nail lacquer that lasts and lasts. It’s basically the same powder used for acrylic nails applied thinner. When dried under a UV light, the powder forms a chip-proof bond with the nail. To maintain the color, wearers get “color fills,” similar to an acrylic tips fill-in, when their nails grow out. Permanent in this sense doesn’t mean you have to rock the same nail color forever, though. Regular nail polish can be applied on top of the Soak-Off Gels. And the gels are removed by soaking the nails in an acetone solution.

Beauty Test Drive: Skyn Icelandic Relief Eye Pen

skyn stick

Being puffy is only in style when Diddy is around. Combat it with Skyn Iceland’s Relief Eye Pen, a portable spot treatment that’s (remarkably) fun to use. Meant to help beat stress by reducing puffiness and dark circles, the blend of vitamin K, orange peel and cotton powder (weird) creates a cooling effect when applied for a mini-relief from summer heat. It’s an especially great purchase for contact-wearers and sufferers of seasonal allergies who constantly have puffy eyes. [$20, Sephora]

Becca Bronzer Is Bitchin’

Becca Bronzer

I’ve been scared to use bronzer since an experiment went so terribly wrong for me circa freshman year of high school: I thought I was using bronzer sparingly, but pictures from back in the day reveal I looked like an oompa loompa. The mere thought of returning to those months of orange-y glow is a tad traumatic. But we’d do anything for a good beauty test drive, so I gave Becca’s Mineral Powder Bronzer a go. And I loved it.

As long as you’re careful with the quantity—one or two brushes per cheek, please—you’ll look subtly tan and not at all like you belong in Willy Wonka’s factory. Warning though: if you’re looking for a dark bronzer, this isn’t the one for you. Putting on a ton of it will just make you look silly.

But let’s be honest, any really pale girl trying to look sexily South American with the help of powder and a brush is going to look silly. [$38, Becca, Amazon]

Putting A Lid On It: Tape Gives Women Eyes Creases

Koji Technical Eye Tape Is Used By Women Who Want More Crease In Their Eye Lids

Most of us have some body hangup, whether we hate our hair (“Too curly!” “Too straight!”) or bodies (“My boobs are too small!” “My boobs are too big!”). For many Asian women, it’s the lack of an eye crease — some Asians don’t have defined indentations above their eye, which is called a “double eyelid.” The trouble, women claim, is that this “single eyelid” look makes them appear tired or mad.

Eye surgery is a very popular procedure, but now the Japanese have created a product to fix this “problem,” at least temporarily: Koji Technical Eye Tape. The tape can be applied on top of makeup in the morning to create this coveted “deep lid” look. While it sounds wacky, it’s probably not any weirder than other things we do in the name of beauty. And it’s a lot less dramatic than going under the knife. What do you think? [Koji Technical Eye Tape, Amazon]

Alcohol Does A Body Good

alcoholic beverage-related beauty products

Mojito Lip Balm, $12, Malin + Goetz
Senorita Margarita Ultra Rich 3-in-1 Shampoo, Shower Gel, and Bubble Bath, $16, Philosophy

Drinking too much alcohol will make you have a bad face day, and it might cause premature aging. However, cocktails in the form of beauty products will perk you up as much as a poolside Tecate.

Seriously, Wear More Eye Makeup

Makeup

There are a lot of guys who like nothing better than a girl who rolls out of bed, brushes her chompers, throws on a pair of jeans and a shirt and is ready for whatever life has to throw at her. I am not one of those guys. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate that sometimes you (or I) may want to throw on a non-Red Sox cap and beeline it to the quickie mart for all the essentials (Fruit Roll-Ups, TP, ketchup, Olde English, the basics).

Would You Prefer Brains Or Beauty Or Friendship?

Women Are Conflicted Between Brains And Beauty

Last week, we asked you whether you’d want to be called a slut or fat. More of you picked slut over fat (1,573 vs. 689). Obviously, perceived promiscuity is a less hurtful label to Frisky readers than assaults on our appearance, even if we’re playing into archaic ideals. But when it’s a choice of brains versus beauty, women are still conflicted, according to a an Oxygen network poll of more than 2,000 women aged 18 to 34.

Stop Staring At Me With Your Giant Eyeball Head

Eye Fashion

Here’s looking at you, kid. This model wasn’t crying when she paraded down the runway during Milan Fashion Week wearing this surrealist-psycho ensemble designed by Madrid’s Agatha Ruiz de la Prada—or, heck, was she? It’s impossible to tell with that giant eyeball she’s wearing on her head. Who knew cyclopses were the new black? And if that skirt’s not sexual, I don’t know what it is. Or, you know, maybe that’s just me. Of course, this frock wasn’t the only crazy creation the Spanish designer concocted for her Fall/Winter 2009 line. There’s the baguette hat, the trapped-in-a-birdcage exoskeleton, Rainbow Brite Chewbacca, and, I don’t know, this chick just looks like a hedge. [China Daily]

Off With Your Head!

Headless Woman

Want a new look? Montreal-based beauty salon Käaz suggests that if you really want a total makeover, it would be best if you let them decapitate you first. Created by ad agency Bleublancrouge, the Canadian campaign promises to “CHANGE YOUR STYLE.” I’m not quite sure how this works, though. So, you go into the salon, you hand them your head, they do what they want with it, and when you come back, they sew your new head back on for you? The super-rolled and devil-Pixie hairstyles are questionable enough, but you’d think if they were going to throw in the plastic surgery, they’d do a better job of suturing you back up. Also, neither of these post-styled chicks looks very happy. Or maybe it’s just me, and looking like the Queen of Hearts just had her way with you is the next thing in hairstyling. Misogyny or beauty? That’s your call. [Copyranter]

Why Men Need You To Groom Them

Groomed Man

Women, take note: when the appearance of men’s toenails suggest that we are either vying for a Guinness World Record—or preparing for an underground cage fighting match—feel free to mention that they’ve gotten a tad long. We don’t mind.

Study Shows That Beauty Is In The Gender Of The Beholder

Study Reveals How Men And Women View Beauty

A recent study says women and men view beauty differently. Yeah, we kind of already suspected that. But now there is proof to back it up! Apparently, women use their whole brain to absorb beauty, whereas men use the right side of their brains.
