The Daily Squeeze: Scarlett Goes Brunette, Curvy Bodies, And The New “Gossip Girl” Couple

Splash News
  • Scarlett Johansson dyed her hair darker for winter. Now she looks more normal girl and less sex kitten, which makes me like her more. [Marie Claire, U.K.]
  • This is bananas: Bravo has ordered a second season of “The Rachel Zoe Project”! [LA Times]
  • Having a body that’s not the ideal hourglass shape by could be better for your health. This is because the hormones that makes women stronger and better able to deal with stress tend to redistribute fat from the hips to the waist, making for a less curvy shape. [EurekAlert]

    Barbie’s Big Birthday

Barbie Turns 50, Mattel Sponsors New York Fashion Week

Barbie is turning 50 next year (doesn’t she look good for her age?), and her birthday celebration is going to be huge. She’s getting a line of beauty products, collaborating with Vera Wang on a wedding dress and Jeremy Scott on a capsule collection, and getting her own show at New York Fashion Week in February. For the show, 50 designers will produce life-sized outfits inspired by the doll—oh, to be a style icon. We’re curious whether the models who will walk in Barbie’s fashion show will all resemble her. If so, they’re going to have a hard time finding anyone, because even models don’t have her kind of proportions. Check out Barbie’s many, many, many looks over the years, after the jump…

    Creepy Or Cool? Barbie Baubles

    Barbie Body Part Jewelry

Personally, I think these are really rad. Made by Etsy retailer Margaux Lange, these earrings, necklaces, and rings are made from disembodied Barbie parts. Edgy? Subversive? Icky? Or all of the above? [$110-$185, Etsy]

10 Favorite Dolls From Our Childhood

10 Favorite Dolls From Our Childhood

I was kind of obsessed with Barbie dolls when I was younger. Although I had over 50 Barbies, my mom knew we couldn’t leave a toy store without visiting the Barbie aisle. I didn’t get a new doll most of the time, but sometimes she would buy me a new Barbie outfit, which is just like getting a new doll. Anyone that wanted to buy me a gift knew that anything Barbie would delight me. I could play with my Barbies for hours on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, but on some rare occasions, I did play with baby dolls. For most girls dolls are a large part of childhood because dolls allow them to play at adult situations, like being a mother or having a career. Some women continue their doll play even as adults. We’re not longing for our childhoods, but every now and then we feel the pull of nostalgia, so we put together a list of our favorite dolls. Check out the list, as well as some classic commercials, after the jump.

Barbie: Now With Even More Vinyl!

    Black Canary Barbie

There’s some stiff competition, but the sluttiest Barbie of all time has just come out: Black Canary. It’s based on the comic book character and conservative Christian groups are pissed because the kids brand doll has been (even more) tricked out in this outfit—a vinyl teddy and knee high boots with fishnets. Does Barbie like it rough? Now, we’re not sure who the market for this S&M Barbie is, but it looks just like Cher from the “If I Could Turn Back Time” video. Patent vinyl is clearly a timeless fashion classic.  [Dlisted]

Mattel Releases Barbie For The Birds

    The Birds Barbie

I hated Barbie as a fat kid, for obvious reasons. She was super skinny, had cooler clothes than me, hung out with yuppies, and her make-up looked like my evil babysitter’s. Back in the day, Barbie seemed like the suburban spawn of Satan in her perfect little princess castle.  But now that I’m an adult, I finally want one!  Sure, she’s still thin, but at least this Barbie is a little twisted.  Mattel has announced plans to release a doll based on the Hitchcock horror flick The Birds. Set to hit shelves in October, this Barbie is dressed in a pea-green, ‘60s suit with attacking seagulls attached, carrying a matching handbag (of course).  How cool, dark, and un-Barbie-like!  Take that Bratz, Barbie’s back….and ready to fight for her life.  [Nerd Approved]

Barbie Is Ruining The World, Some Say

    Kimora Lee Simmons Barbie

In a letter to Iran’s vice president, Prosecutor General Ghorban Ali Dori Najafabadi writes that importing Western toys into the country is a “danger” that needs to be stopped. In Iran, importing Western toys is discouraged but not illegal, and many toys are smuggled into the country. Najafabadi says their increased visibility is worrisome: “The displays of personalities such as Barbie, Batman, Spiderman and Harry Potter ... as well as the irregular importation of unsanctioned computer games and movies are all warning bells to the officials in the cultural arena.” Maybe he’s just pissed he doesn’t have the Kimora Lee Simmons Barbie, complete with a faux-Chinchilla coat.
