Trend In The Making: Brown Paper Handbags

Hey, handbag, lookin’ good. You lose some weight?
If your purse has been looking thinner lately, it’s probably a sign of a growing trend: Glamour reports that a new study finds that women have been downsizing their handbags. According to these findings, bags are now the “lightest they’ve been in seven years, down from their heaviest average (7.3 pounds) of two and a half years ago. Now the average woman is schlepping just three extra pounds on her arm.” The reason? Electronic gadgets like the iPhone, which combine several things you might have previously toted. If this is true, then there’s hope for defeating female stereotypes yet—perhaps someday soon women will finally be able to shed that “I carry the entire world in my handbag” preconception. (Now if someone could just create an app for storing your gym clothes and makeup ... )
Do you think this is true? Has technology lightened your load? [Glamour]
Ahh ... shoe shopping is sometimes better than sex. Wearing a pair of shoes that you love can make you feel as sexy as you do post-climax. And getting them for a good deal doesn’t hurt either. So we’re loving the fact that we don’t have to walk up and down long aisles to really appreciate DSW’s affordable offerings. We’d much rather shoe shop from our desks. Check out our favorite DSW finds after the jump.
Gotta say, Ann Taylor has really been stepping up its style game lately! I happened upon the brand’s spring 2010 jewelry line and immediately fell in love. Witness the above necklace, $128. (A tiny bit steep, but if you head on over to the site, you can get an extra 25 percent off all the sale pieces.) And here’s my thing: J.Crew has some pretty jewelry, but you see it all over the place—this stuff feels a lot like theirs, but you won’t be one of a million people wearing it. See a few more pieces, after the jump!
Iconic bag brand LeSportsac has a new way to carry you through the day—the company’s just branched out into footwear, and is launching a new collection next month. If you’ve been a LeSportsac lover since you were a kid, then you’ll definitely find something you like. There are flirty ballet flats that come in LeSportsac signature prints as well as punchy and metallic colors. Also in the mix are patterned rain boots decked out in floral or gingham motifs (with matching backpacks and purses!).
While most of the offerings stay on the side of cute, we do have to say that we’re all about those black glitter rain booties that are pretty edgy, and dare we say it ... Darth-tastic? Check out some more images after the jump! [Nylon]
We’ve been seeing platform pumps all over the red carpet lately. The all-grown-up Dakota Fanning wore a crimson D&G pair to the L.A. premiere of “New Moon” and Kate Hudson put on a super high white pair by Casadei for this weekend’s Golden Globes. Plus, stylist to the stars Rachel Zoe and Style.com’s Candy Pratts Price wrote up Alexander McQueen’s Titanic Ballerina Pumps. And the trend-following Steve Madden already has pairs of platform pumps in stock. Obviously, they’re the hot new shoe, but we can’t decide whether they’re totally weird or an awesome way to add height. What do you think?

I’ve talked about my l-o-v-e, love for shoulders before—they’re the one body part that, no matter what your weight or gym-going schedule is, are always looking sexy. So, imagine my excitement when I stumbled across jewelry for your shoulders! Babette Epaulette designed an entire line of various shoulder jewelry from chains, mesh pieces and feathers—you can wear ‘em over a sleek and snug jacket or paired with a strapless dress. They really draw attention to your shoulders—but I’m not sure if I think it’s a good kind of attention? What are your thoughts here, sexy or sort of silly? [Babette Epaulette]
Most American motorcyclists pride themselves on looking grungy, but we’re sure there’s a market for helmut couture somewhere (we’re thinking Paris and Milan): Karl Lagerfeld has teamed up with Jérôme Coste to create this limited-edition, tweed number which is also outfitted with an iPod pocket. The price? A cool as a cucumber $1,737. [Luxury Launches]
Get ready for it—ChUggs are coming your way. While it might seem like a fashion prank, the Jimmy Choo and Uggs are indeed teaming up to work on a collaboration. (Our Photoshop magic, however, is a fashion prank.) Yet, it does sound like the final product will be a pretty decent mix of the two styles. According to WWD and an official press release, “The collection will be based on the construction of Ugg’s sheepskin boots ‘with design details that embody the spirit of the Jimmy Choo brand,’ the two companies said in a statement.” And prices? Sky-high, of course. Expect to pay upwards of $500 for a pair!
What will this mean? High heeled boots? Fuzzy stilettos? We’ll be anxious to see where the two designers end up—and we can only hope that our vision is nowhere near the truth. [WWD]
As so often is the case when it comes to the tastiest of fashion morsels, there’s good news, and, well, there’s bad news. We couldn’t be happier to discover that, as of today, super groovy designer Matthew Williamson’s gorgeous wares are officially on sale online for all the ladies who care to shop to their hearts’ contents from the convenience of home. The sad news is, unlike most web retailers clearing out their inventories via major post-holiday clearance discounts right now, there’s nary a red tag in site over at club Williamson. With that in mind, we made some sacrifices and forced ourselves to look at the lower priced items, where we managed to fall in love with this completely affordable brocade belt which retails for $895. Cough. [Matthew Williamson]
Louis Vuitton’s now-famous bunny ears retail for about $335, which, given that you have to tie them yourself, is a bit steep for us. To remedy the situation, Topshop has just knocked them off at a lower price ($36!) and with a more convenient headband attachment. Yes, this remains a particularly ridiculous accessory, but they’re at least good for a costume…or a day when you’re feeling mischievous and know that work is going to be particularly boring. [Refinery 29]
I’m convinced that there are two types of people in this world—you’re either a long-time thong wearer and devotee or you just can’t stand having a piece of fabric wedged in between your butt cheeks. Personally, I loathe thongs. But a thong as jewelry? I’m all about it! Check out this cheeky (sorry, couldn’t resist) piece of jewelry by designer Delfina Delettrez, interestingly called “Saffo” (after the bisexual Ancient Greek poet). The gold and black diamond ring, though, is an investment at $3,502—yow. [Trend de la Creme]
Bored of your bling? Sorry, you’re out of luck ... well, unless you bought this interchangeable diamond stone ring. The ring “set” (that’s what we’re calling it) by Sruli Recht comes with a total of three stones, which are in different colors and shapes so they can be switched out depending on your mood. It’s like a slightly more expensive (the stones are rough, uncut diamonds totaling €3530, approximately $5,060) mood ring! OK, so the price isn’t exactly accessible, but how cool-looking do these untreated gems look? [InventorSpot]
Oh, the irony. Last night, British socialite Peaches Geldof attended a store opening, and later lamented on Twitter: “Tonight was too indie. Even for me. Never though I’d say it but I’m gonna have to - too many hipsters spoil the b[r]oth.” Too indie, you say? Then what’s that ridiculously bizarre fur tail doing on your purse? Because that looks pretty hipsterific, if you ask us.
For a moment we thought the accessory might have been part of the Louis Vuitton SS 2010 collection, which included dangling fox fur tassels. But no, the LV designs were larger and featured dyes in splashy colors. Geldof’s tail appears to be the real deal, au naturel. Coming soon to an Urban Outfitters near you. [DailyMail.co.uk]
While this Rosey Ring is grown-up and sexy, it inevitably brings us back to childhood: “Ring around the rosey ... ” Is it weird that something can be seductive and childish at the same time? (Although that rhyme was about the bubonic plague ... but we digress.) A concept by German designer Fabien Seibert, the laser-cut rose silhouette elegantly wraps around the wearer’s finger. Its open form and stainless steel material lets you adjust it to make a perfect fit, which is great for those with small hands. Or big. Whatever. [$98, MoMA Store]
Looking for unique jewelry that suggests you may be interested in having someone cut across your dotted line? This Punctirus piece can be worn as a necklace or a bracelet, and the strange design makes it appear that a pair of tiny scissors are preparing to cut off your head or nip your hand off at the wrist. For those girls who like their accessories a bit more, um, daring, this would be a perfect fit. [NOTCOT]
