An Open Audition For The Purr-fect Black Cat

The year was 1961. Vincent Price needed a black cat for his new movie, “Tales of Terror.” An open audition was held. The results, captured by Life magazine photographer Ralph Crane, are a little ridiculous, a little spooky, and totally awesome. See more photos from the series over at Bored Panda.

Vintage Style Inspiration: Brigitte Bardot

It’s easy to see why Brigitte Bardot was a style icon: she was a sex symbol, a trendsetter, and her outfits from the ’60s and ’70s still look fresh today. I’ve always loved this photo of her in cropped polka-dot pants, a simple white tank, and ballet flats. It’s so fresh and summery, and easy to recreate with this season’s printed denim trend. After the jump, our modern take on Brigitte’s outfit, and all the shopping details to get the look for yourself… Keep reading »

4-Year-Old Girl Genius Inducted Into Mensa

How to talk to teenage girls
Anyone can be a mentor. Here's how! Read More »

Heidi Hankins has always been a smartypants: by age two she could read and count to 40, by age three she could add and subtract, and now, at age 4, she has been inducted into Mensa with an IQ of 159. To put that number into perspective, the average adult has an IQ of 100; Stephen Hawking has an IQ of 160. Heidi’s parents, a public health lecturer and an artist from Winchester, England, suspected she was bright but were shocked when they heard the results. And according to her father, Heidi’s already mastered the art of sarcasm as well: “The other day I gave her mash and fishfingers for dinner — something quite boring — and her response was ‘that’s impressive,’ so she has a sense of humor, too.” Damn, between the 86-year-old gymnasts and the 4-year-old geniuses, I’m feeling like quite the underachiever these days. It’s spring! The trees are blossoming! All six of them! Or maybe that’s just on my block. The several tufts of grass are violently green. I suddenly want to buy at least two pairs of gladiator sandals. Because suddenly one doesn’t feel like enough. And also, because it’s spring, weight-loss advice is blooming. It’s everywhere. Shed those extra pounds before summer! Be able to fit into those shorts! Get your bikini bod on! Or, you know, catchier slogans.

I am going to the Caribbean in a couple months. My dad won a trip at an auction, and he’s taking the family, significant others included. When I found out, my first thought was “Yay!” and my second thought was, “Shit.” The “shit” related to the fact that I have not put on a bikini in well over a year, and since then, I’ve gained about 15 pounds. It’s not a new trend to name your child after a favorite character from pop-culture but the last few years have lent themselves to trendy names from film making their way to the top of the list. For the last few years, “Twilight”’s Bella has been a popular name but this year it’s another young adult franchise that’s getting everyones’ attention – “The Hunger Games.” One of the characters took the number one spot on a preview list of what’s going to be hot this year, while a second name from the series also made it onto their radar. I think you’ll be surprised at the results. Read more…

A new study from the University of Illinois should make college students very happy: apparently drinking a couple beers before a test may improve your performance. Researchers administered a brain teaser quiz to a group of 40 men. Study participants who had two drinks before the test –either two pints of beer or two medium glasses of wine–were able to solve 40 percent more brain teasers than the sober participants, and they solved them considerably faster. The researchers say this is because alcohol hinders analytical thinking and opens your mind to creative problem solving. Tipsy test-takers also spend less time second-guessing themselves. Study co-author Jennifer Wiley is quick to point out that these results do not apply to binge drinking, though: “We tested what happens when people are slightly merry — not when people drink to extremes.” So there you have it. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to get slightly merry and take some online IQ tests. [MSN]

Ever since I started rockin’ bangs a few months ago, an eyebrow emergency has been steadily escalating on my forehead. If no one can see what my brows look like, what’s the point of waxing them? I can save money and time and stop humiliating myself by being such a sissy about the pain! But I’ve recently decided to grow my bangs out again — too much hassle, I can’t deal — and it was time to make a waxing appointment. I wanted it done well, seeing as its been awhile since I’ve waxed, so I made an appointment at Anastasia Brow Bar at Sephora … and found myself forking over $32 plus tip. Keep reading »

Recently, I ended up naked in front of a full-length mirror. It was an accident. Seriously, it was. I don’t walk around naked that much. Anyway, there I was, naked, in front of this mirror. And for some reason, I took a long moment, just to look. And it was weird. Because it occurred to me that I never do that. Which I guess is actually pretty normal. But the weird part was that I didn’t really know my own naked body. It was vaguely familiar, of course. I mean, I do take showers and stuff. But I almost never pay attention to it, except to give it some unhelpful critique or be surprised by how chubby it’s gotten in certain places. Actually, ever since I gained some weight, I’ve wanted to be naked even less. Especially when there’s no immediate sex involved. Standing in front of the mirror, I had a small epiphany. I should get to know my naked body. I should get good at being naked. Actually, everyone should. If I was a dictator, I’d mandate daily naked time. And free healthcare for all! And cake! But mostly naked time. Why? Here are some reasons… Keep reading »

Skincare used to be a whole daunting arena of the beauty industry that I avoided out of fear. My dry, sensitive skin is so fickle. I washed daily with Cetaphil, scrubbed once or twice a week with St. Ives Apricot Scrub, and glopped on a pricy Bliss face mask every month or so. Most days I removed my makeup before going to bed, but not always, because I am lazy. My skin neither looked nor felt particularly good or particularly bad — just kinda blah and dry, as usual.

In the past few months, I’ve gotten really into skincare for my criminally dry visage.  I’ve added new skincare products to my arsenal, which I’ll save for Beauty Test Drives another day. My skin has really been perking up, to the point where The Frisky’s boss has been complimenting me! And for the past few days, I have been using a little handheld device called the Clarisonic Mia 2. No joke, it’s already making my skin look and feel amazing.  Keep reading »
