Mother arrested for allegedly putting her 5-year-old in a tanning bed. Read More »

I wouldn’t know if I could tan naturally because I’ve never actually tried. Aside from the fact that, you know, the sun wants to give you cancer and shit, I’m just not someone who has ever liked to bask outside and broil. My brother and I, unlike our medium-skinned parents and the rest of our family on both sides, are both super-fair, easily burnt freckle faces. We often wonder whose children we actually are (in fact, we both bear a slight resemblance to Guy Fieri). In summers of yore I’ve been totally content with my bright white (seriously, I am the whitest) complexion, but I think I’m on the brink of a change of heart. Frightened by the starkness of my legs, and sporting a subtle, summery ombré fade in my hair, I am ready to join the rest of the world and get a tan. Not a real tan, of course — I still hate laying outside. It’s so boring. Whatever! Problem is, I can’t seem to find the right self-tanner for my skin tone. I figured Jergens Natural Glow was a safe place to start, but the incredibly overwhelming smell put me off after applying it twice. Seriously, I wanted to run away from myself. Keep reading »

Oh, Desmond Hatchett, I thought what we had was special, but alas, so did 11 other women. The results of your smooth moves and shocking virility? You’ve fathered 30 children over the past 14 years, and now you’re in court requesting a break from child support payments. I guess I can’t really blame you, because even though some of your kids only receive $1.49 a month, when you’re making minimum wage, that’s gotta add up fast. But remember back in 2009, when you told an interviewer you were done having kids, and then you had nine more? What happened there? Is there a massive condom shortage in Knoxville, Tennessee? Were you trying to break the county record (which you did, by the way)? I have to admit that I’m kind of impressed. There is a good chance you’re a modern day god of fertility mingling with mortals for fun. But still, we’re breaking up. [LA Times]

If you are unfortunate enough to be born with dry skin, your life will go something like this:

  1. Everyone from dermatologists to fashion magazines will tell you that you have to wash your face with Cetaphil.
  2. You will realize they are right, so you will wash your face with Cetaphil.
  3. This will get very boring very quickly and possibly not even work.
This was the story of my life. And then a lovely actress decided to try her hand at skincare and beauty products, price her line, called Nuance Salma Hayek, quite reasonably, and sell it as CVS … and change my skincare routine forever. Keep reading »

Working Women Ugly?

As if the “mommy wars” need even more ammunition to make women feel bad about themselves: a new Gallup poll found that stay-at-home-moms were more likely to be unhappy than working mothers.

Gallup surveyed nearly 61,000 women between the ages of 18 to 64 who had at least one child under the age of 18. A quarter of SATMs said they felt a lot of sadness “yesterday” and one-fifth said they felt anger, compared with only 16 percent and 14 percent of working mothers, respectively. Gallup said SAHMs were more slightly more likely to say they felt stressed “yesterday” than working moms (50 percent to 48 percent) and more SAHMs said they had been diagnosed with depression as well (28 percent to 17 percent).

What does it all mean? Eh, probably nothing.

Women have complained for years about the lack of diversity in the modeling industry, and while we’ve seen some small improvements, models are still overwhelmingly very tall, very thin, very young, and very white. However, a recent study might provide companies with just the motivation they need to change their ways: women spend a lot more money when they see clothes on models and mannequins with body types similar to theirs. Here’s the lowdown… Keep reading »

Our Top 10 Nail Color Picks For Summer 2012

Every year I look forward to summer’s vivid, unabashed nail polish shades, but this season’s selections are especially blazing — eye-searing, in fact. We’ve been seeing a major upswing in all things neon since winter, and colors just keep getting brighter and brighter. Where fashion goes, nails follow suit, and isn’t it wonderful? Nothing yanks me out of my summer up-all-night stupor in the morning like a huge iced coffee and a flash of neon. I’m actually a religious wearer of flesh-toned fingernails, but my toes are all about the flashiest of pinks and oranges come mid-May. Here are my top ten must-wear shades for the summertime (and beyond, if you’re brave). For best results and maximum impact, pair with all-white and a contrasting neon lip color. The sun will thank you for taking some of the heat off.

I just got back from a totally blissful six-day vacation in Tulum, Mexico, a quiet beach town about two hours from Cancun. I went alone. I’ve traveled solo (i.e. not in the company of a friend, boyfriend, or family member) before, but always as part of an organized group. This trip was the first time I was traveling alone without built-in activities and social opportunities. It was wonderful. I really enjoy my own company and loved having the freedom to do whatever I wanted — including nothing. But as a single woman traveling alone to a foreign country, I also knew I needed to be cautious and mindful of my safety. I took cabs at night if the area I was going to wasn’t well-lit, I locked my cabana door tight at night even though the ocean breeze would have cooled things down, and I kept a watchful eye on my drink at all times.
