Girl Talk: Why Being Drunk Is A Feminist Issue

Too Drunk?
If you're a drunk woman who gets raped, will you be taken seriously? Read More »

Last weekend, I stood on the subway platform, thumbing through a magazine and grumbling about how the next train wouldn’t arrive for another 11 minutes. As I waited, more and more feet descended the stairs. Two pairs caught my attention — one was manicured with bright red polish and strapped into a sky high silver sandals, the other was in electric blue stilettos. Both pairs of ankles wobbled as their owners awkwardly lowered their feet. It seemed like at any moment, one—or maybe both—of them would come plummeting down the stairs. A few unsteady steps later, two women appeared in full view—both their faces were flushed and they clung to each other’s arms for dear life. “Wha a you lookin’ at,” one of them slurred to a guy who shook his head as they passed.

These girls were trashed. It was only 8 p.m.

Watching them zig and zag down the subway platform, I felt adrenaline rush through me. I felt like I should do something. But what? These are adults. They’re just having fun, I thought. They can take care of themselves.

But then another part of me thought: how naive. Keep reading »

What Are Your Half Year Resolutions?

Happy June 1st, y’all. I’m not exactly sure how time is sprinting by so freaking fast, but we have already almost reached the half point of 2011. [The half point, I guess, would maybe be July 1? Six months completed, six months to go? Whatever. -- Editor] Which makes today a great day to push the reboot button and think about things you’d like to change going forward. Last year, I decided to make some Half Year Resolutions on June 1st because, well, why should January 1st have all the fun? After the jump, my very random list of Half Year Resolutions. Now, share yours in the comments section.

Dear Wendy: “What’s The REAL Reason He Doesn’t Want To Date Me?”

A week ago I met a really nice guy and we hit it off right away. We both are newly single and expressed to one another that we were just looking for someone to go out and spend time with. We went on our first official date a couple of days ago and it went very well. I was pretty certain that we’d see each other again because at certain moments during the date he would make references to future dates. Well, a few hours after the date he texted me saying that while he had a nice time with me and liked me he wasn’t ready for any kind of commitment and wanted to keep his options open. He also said that he felt like if we continued to see one another we’d likely end up in a serious relationship, and that that’s not what he wants right now. I know the answer here should be obvious to me, but it just really sucks! I have never connected this soon with someone before and we had a great first date and I could tell he was into me, but now suddenly I’m rejected because he likes me too much? He said he didn’t want to hurt me and that I deserve a lot more than he can give me right now. Do you think he was he being genuine and really looking out for me? Or was this just his way of saying he’s not into me without actually saying it? — Bummed After First Date

Girl Talk: How I Overdosed On Self-Help

This is how I used to start my day: I’d meditate for five minutes, read the daily passage in The Language of Letting Go by Melody Beattie, and do the daily reading and writing exercises from my Buddhism book. Then I’d log onto my computer and type my gratitude list of 30-50 items I was grateful for, followed by the 3-5 affirmations I was currently working with, written 1-10 times each. I’d email this to the approximately 40 women I exchanged gratitude lists with, and then read their lists in my inbox. Before turning off my computer, I’d scan Twitter for inspirational quotes to retweet.

On the subway to work, I’d listen to an uplifting playlist on my iPod, and/or recite affirmations in my mind. Keep reading »

Man Proposes To Girlfriend Via Mural (Updated With An Awesome Time-Lapse Video!)

Around the corner from my apartment, there’s a wall that is frequently reserved by graffiti artists for commissioned murals. Sometimes those murals are hideous, often they’re merely “meh,” and occasionally they are truly beautiful. Such is the case with the mural currently occupying the space. Jeff Gurwin, 28, proposed to his girlfriend, Caitlin Fitzsimons, 27, by having the above mural painted on the East Village wall — the Scrabble tiles are a reference to the couple’s mutual love of the game, and the pug is representative of Caitlin’s mom’s dog Parky. Fitzsimons saw the mural on her way to meet Jeff for dinner — she cried and said yes! Thank goodness, as the mural is going to be up for a month. Congrats to the happy couple! And check out an awesome time-lapse video of the mural going up, after the jump… [Village Voice, EV Grieve] Keep reading »
