Poll: Will An “Ugly Betty” Makeover Ruin The Show?
Since "Ugly Betty" began airing in 2006, the title character has been known for her kooky, not-so-stylish getups. Yes, her wardrobe has progressed in the show's four seasons -- from the Guadalajara poncho she wore in the first episode to the crazy patterned dresses of last season -- especially after Patricia Field took over as costume designer when the show moved to New York last year.
There could be even more drastic changes coming to Betty's closet next season. According to Entertainment Weekly writer Michael Ausiello, ABC has conducted focus groups to get feedback on a major Betty makeover. In scenes watched by the focus group, Betty wears a pastel pink suit in one and a black dress with a ruffled V-neck in another. Are the days of her style-defining mismatched patterns gone? (She's been an inspiration to me on that trend.) Supposedly, she'll also lose her braces at some point. Will Betty be as lovably fallible if she's chic? And are ABC execs changing the entire Ugly Betty character by making her well-groomed?

I can’t stand this show. I think it’s quite stupid and really annoying.

I think it would be better if they did something like have her get off her braces just because she doesn’t need them anymore and then got contacts or something because of some odd reason. Maybe then she starts to play with fashion differently than before as she is adjusting to those changes. That would be more natural without compromising the current themes of being true to your own style, even when you are immersed in the shallow and vain Mode world.

The show Ugly Betty or Betty la Fea is originally from Venezuela and in that show the character ended up changing her style toward the end of the run. People were rooting for her to change and actually liked the show more. The american version is more complex and skewed the original but I think the show would be the same because its not about her silly clothes its about the dynamic of the characters. I hate her clothes they make me dizzy and I want to dress her normally so I vote for change.

As an avid “Betty” fan, I love both Betty’s and the show’s quirks. I think it’s awesome that she got hired despite her looks, but I think that if the show is supposed to be real, it should have her evolve. Take “The Devil Wears Prada”, Anne Hathaway was frumpy, got a job at Vogue, and ended up a total fashionista…but didnt lose her personality. Betty wouldnt have kept her job at Mode dressed like that - the media would eat her (and Daniel!) alive! Even just the fact that she doesnt seem to be LEARNING from the magazine and her experiences that smart, powerful women can still dress well!! In fact, people take smart women MORE seriously when they dress well.
I think that they should have been making strides all along - as others realize how awesome she is inside, something could have changed on the outside of her (like in ‘Nanny McPhee). Like, she should have lost her braces AGES ago. Maybe fixed her hair last season and this season the wardrobe.

I don’t understand how genuinely good shows like Arrested Development get the axe, but awful shows like Ugly Betty somehow escape cancellation.

@JessicaGuillen Actually, the original is from Colombia.
It was a soup opera, so..it had to end shortly, at the ending was ...basically her change and she became more independent and secure and etc etc….
I’m not a fan of the show, but I always thought that at some point that was gonna happen.

it really depends on how drastic the change is. subtle things like a little different clotes, removing the braces, and trimming up the catepillars over her eyes. just subtly though. i mean come on, the show IS called UGLY betty. not chic betty.
