Poll: How Much Do You Drink On A First Date?
I was conversing with a dude this weekend about imbibing alcohol on a first date -- how much is too much and even too little. As someone who enjoys a good glass/bottle of wine, especially paired with food, dating someone who drinks is kind of, well, important to me. No offense to any readers who don't drink (especially those who are in recovery), but it would be difficult for me to date a non-drinker. That said, I don't want to date someone who can't have a good time without boozing it up either. I always do my darndest not to get drunk on a first date, mainly because I want to make the best decisions possible if I'm just starting to get to know someone -- and I certainly would be buggin' out a little if my date got smashed while I remained fairly sober. So, what about you?

I have a self-imposed 2 drink limit, because when I dirnk more I get super affectionate… which is not really the best way to keep a clear head.

This is funny, because it’s something I’ve run into recently, having just started dating after coming out of a long relationship. I forgot how much you drink on dates!!
The first date I went on after breaking up with my ex, we met for drinks before dinner and had 2. Then we had a bottle of wine at dinner (so 2ish glasses each), and then we had time before the movie so we went to a bar for a few drinks to kill time. I ended up not liking it (who wants to sit through a movie half drunk?) and have since altered my date drinking habits.

Why does the appropriate poll answer for me *never* included?
Really, the lack of non-cute/sexy halloween costume poll options was one thing, I suppose; a culture bent on the objectification of women is hard to get away from, but seriously?
No “Only one *insert silly catch-all explanation here*”?

I think that a 2 drink (or if petite, 1 drink) limit is really sound advice. Relaxing is one thing, but part of what a first date is about is coming to a decision about whether the two of you have some potential chemistry, and the extra chemistry of a lot of ethanol in your bloodstream isn’t going to help.
So unless your goal is to end up the next morning with a hangover in your head and regrets in your gut…

I rarely drink, but my husband thinks that’s great. I’m quite capable of being fun and out-going sober, and he always has a DD. On the rare occasions that I feel like drinking, he willingly stays sober, so he can drive. It’s a win-win.

I have a one-drink limit when I’m out, period. Date or not. It’s more of a safety issue than a not-looking-like-a-loser issue.
I would NEVER want to get tipsy on a first date, and I wouldn’t want to see him get tipsy, either.
