Poll: Do You Pee In The Shower?

peeing in the shower

Today's Guardian includes an article with the headline, "Peeing in the shower: the rules." Seems like a funny discussion for a newspaper, doesn't it? Well, the current water shortages in countries like Brazil are making it news. Television ads in that country encourage people to pee in the shower as a way to save water, and, always sticklers for protocol, the British don't want to get caught in the same situation without laying out a set of rules.

What makes this act, which some believe to be taboo, OK? Waiting to turn on the water before starting, but doing it toward the beginning of your shower so it gets completely washed away. However, peeing in the shower isn't always acceptable. For example, you can only do it in your shower, and not a friend's or a public facility. (My question is: If you share your shower with a roommate or boyfriend, is it still OK?)

Now that peeing in the shower has reached the mainstream, how do you feel about it?

Alot of people urinate in the shower, the feeling of water relaxes you and makes you feel the urge to go. Not only that but urine is made up of several things, ammonia is one or them, which is why cat lady I would like to tell you not to clean with ammonia around your cats litter boxes because if they smell that they will think you didn’t clean at all and piss all over your crazy ass house. I think that if you live with other people, roommates, you should not go pee unless your cleaning your shower at least once a week. Speaking as someone who has lived in a house with 4 other people I tried not to go in the shower unless it got to the point where I could not hold it and that I think is okay, not great, not nice, just okay. However when you live with other people you need to respect them and hold it or go before. I think another interesting question to ask would be “when you go poop, after you wipe do you check out your used toilet paper?. We were asking around at work, only one person said no.

I live by myself in an apartment right now and I have 2 full bathrooms, one of which has a shower but not a bathtub. The shower water falls onto the bathroom tile floor, but the floor is tilted slightly to drain into the middle of the shower area. But I would never pee in that shower. I pee in the bathtub when I take a shower, but I agree with the above rules. And in a couple of weeks, I have some roommates moving in with me, so I will definitely stop peeing in the shower.

@goldfinch: I like your question. Who wouldn’t check the toilet paper? You want to make sure you’re all clean afterwards.

We talked about this not so long ago because I remember a lot of us commenters proclaiming that we were proud shower pee-ers.

My boyfriend and I shower together every morning.  I truly cherish the closeness, not to mention saving time and hot water, but I had to train myself to pee before we get in!  The first month or so we’d hop in, I’d hear that water running and was about ready to burst!

Nope, can’t do it.  When I was little (4ish, 5ish), my mom used to stick me and my younger sister in the shower together to save time.  And to make sure we wouldn’t pee in the shower while someone else was in there, she told us that there’s only a small tank of water that gets used for showers and the water just goes out the showerhead, down the drain, into the tank, then back out again.  Since neither of us wanted to wash in pee, we’d always go before we showered.  I have long since figured out that no, that’s not how showers work, but I still have the irrational fear of one day peeing in the shower and getting hit in the face with it coming out of the showerhead.

This is so funny to me!  I’ve never peed in the shower or considered it, but I had this conversation with a friend.  She asked me why I don’t, and my response was, ‘the toilet it right next to the shower!’

But anyways, there is a great blog you should check out, http://postsecret.blogspot.com/ that ‘collects’ people’s secrets.  Frank Warren, the guy who started it says the most common secret he sees is peeing in the shower.  There are new secrets posted every Sunday!

I have an enlarged prostate and always tinkle before showering.  Still several times a week when the warm water runs over me I pee.  Nothing stops it and as badly as I feel about it the only alternative for me would be a cup in the shower to catch it.  On the other hand the shower drain is the same pipe as the toilet, so I shower in shame and take my meds.
