Poll: Are High-Waisted Panties Chic And Retro Or Dowdy And Outdated?

Comments (17) Bookmark and Share

high-waisted underwear Full coverage isn't just for period panties anymore. When we opened the current issue of Marie Claire with Ashley Olsen on the cover, we were a little shocked to see her wearing granny panties -- and making them look good. High-waisted briefs made the August cover of German Vogue, too. Then, while browsing for underwear online, we noticed that Hanky Panky has a few retro styles featuring a significant amount of fabric compared to their very tiny signature thongs. Has the understated sexiness of "Mad Men" rubbed off on the underwear business? For years, it's been "less is more" when it comes to undies, but now you might be able to find a pair that actually covers your butt and makes you feel sexy. But do they look like they belong in your grandmother's underwear drawer?

the 1st one looks kind of sexy, but i dont like the other ones. Sometimes #4 works when its a retro/vintage picture, but something to wear now-a-days, id have to pass for myself. But it def. depends on the girl and if she can make it work!

I wear the # 2 style. I would not be caught dead in a thong. I go for comfort and some pretty lace, not a string going up where it doesn’t belong which trend tells me is cool to wear. Thank you.

I like number 2 and would probably actually wear it, providing the lace wasn’t too bothersome.

I actually would like to “up” my undergarmets.  Right now, they are all functional cotton.  I miss pretty underwear.  Something about pretty underwear, even if worn under jeans and a t-shirt, makes you feel better.

#1 looks like a gridle with garter clips.  #2 looks good and #3 is so-so, but #4 looks out-of-place.

Plus, if women are willing to part with that kind of money for ONE undergarment, then they need to make the right decision.  I’m sure a lot of women would rather get cotton panties at a much lower price and be comfy with them.

You have to be taller or long-waisted or whatever term you want to use to wear these.  I love them, but even ‘low-riders’ look like this on me!

I love 2, 3,& 4, but #1 brings visions of grandma…not that she wasn’t awesome, but still, I’d feel obligated to wear white gloves.

@writergirl-Cosign! Theres nothing sexier to me than a girl peeling off her denims and revealing pretty unwear.
All the panties shown look fine especially if your backyard is booming.

I’m all about retro-hot, but I think you have to make sure the whole package is hot. You can’t throw on your gym bra and a pair of granny panties and declare it sexy just because. You have to have an attractive matching bra, etc.

Also, for what it’s worth, images 1 and 3 don’t seem like very sexy examples of high-waisted panty styles, IMO. Check out Kiss me Deadly, Secrets in Lace, and What Katie Did.

I have a feeling more coverage panties are the same as ugg boots, peasant anything, and high wasted denim. We want to believe they are fashionable because they are comfortable. But we are wrong. They look stupid and men are confused by them. And since when has fashion been comfortable?

I agree with Lynn and would add that sometimes you need a certain kind of underwear for certain outfits. You can’t get the sweater girl look without a pointy bust and tiny waist - underwear helps with the silhouette. You need high waisted panties for your high-waisted outfits which are so on trend for Fall/Winter 09. If you need them, then it’s all about finding the best ones and there are lots to choose from. Try the luxury satin pin-up panties at http://www.madebyniki.co.uk.

@melissaann - I’m going to have to beg to differ. Go to secretsinlace.com and find the highest waisted, most-coverage panties you can. Found them? THAT is the catalog my boyfriend most looks forward to me receiving in the mail, over Bravissmio and Victoria’s Secret.

A question: are high waisted bottoms really more comfortable? The women I have known seem to say they are not. High waisted pants are certainly less flattering, regardless of comfort, and I tend to think that of high waisted undergarments as well.

I absolutely agree with whoever suggested Kiss Me Deadly.  They make beautiful, modern reincarnations of retro-styled shapewear.

To tonykuehn: high waisted bottoms really are more comfortable.  I hate walking around and feeling like my knickers are about to slip off my bum, or feeling afraid to bend down because I might reveal things better left covered.  Full coverage knickers eliminate that possibility.  If your underwear is uncomfortable, it’s usually because you bought the wrong size.

My order of preference, 4, 1, 2, 3.
My husband’s order of preference 4, 1, 2, 3….
He loves shapewear on me and I enjoy wearing it both for me and for him. He used to buy me very skimpy strings and things but it gradually dawned on him that it didn’t have the effect he wanted because it didn’t make me feel good about myself. With shapewear and well-fitting knickers everybody wins!

I very much prefer thongs, as they are far more comfortable and don’t get bunched up…And it’s kinda hard to find a high-waisted thong that isn’t hideous, so I go with the low rise.
