You’ve Got An STD, Bro? That’s So Cool!

pic of man with STDs

Possibly ruining my appreciation for the noble Swedes and their fine IKEA meatballs, a recent study has found that Swedish men with STDs think their infection is an affirmation of their manliness.

University of Skovde researcher Kina Hammarlund interviewed an unknown group of 16- to 30-year-old men and women for her dissertation and discovered it was only male participants who put on rose-colored glasses, seeing STDs like genital warts or gonorrhea as a rite of passage to manhood. It’s a telling statement about sexuality that men viewed STDs as something positive about their manhood, while women didn’t think it said anything about their womanhood. STDs could imply, even erroneously, that a guy is kind of a stud. But it’s hard to believe anyone would be proud of an STD. Could this study be bulls**t? [The Local via Feministing]

As a self-respecting (half) Swede with really awesome cousins still living there I really hope this is bull. Although now I’m going to have to call them up and ask…

This had got to be BS, xifeng882 definitely give us the low down.  This is taking double standards to a whole new level.

I read in the book “Napoleon’s Privates” by Tony Perrottet that back in the day (we’re talking 1800’s or so), it was considered a badge of honor in France for men to contract syphilis, because it meant they were “really becoming a man” by losing their virginity (with prostitutes, naturally). However, I don’t know why on earth that kind of thinking would be encouraged in modern-day society.

I hope the participants were a very skewed portion of the overall population.

If some men have this POV about STDs, I wonder how they’re going to disclose their sexual history with possible partners….

Yeah, this study is complete bull. I talked to one of my cousins last night and just laughed. He said that it might have been something they were proud of in the late 19th century as a sign of their masculinity, but now, its complete bull. I wonder if they gave these studies to drunk Swedes, they’re quite impressive drinkers lol

this almost sounds like a study done at a college with a multiple choice answer that was way to funny to not choose like -

” How do you feel about contracting non-lethal STD’s”

A- deathly afraid
B- somewhat concerned
C- not at all scared
D- it is a manly badge of honor.

I mean, if your a college fratboy, not taking the quiz seriously, that answer amuses you more than any other!
