Would Your Man Wear Meggings?

Russell Brand in Leggings For Men

While Steven Tyler has been rocking the man legging since he made love in an elevator, now his spandex groin gauntlet has been picked up by couture designers and tastemakers in Europe. Tights aren’t just for super heroes and glam rockers anymore! Over the past few years, influential designers like Calvin Klein, Marni, Givency, John Galliano, Bernhard Willhelm, and Alexander McQueen have all sent male models down the runway in meggings, aka man leggings. Fashionistas are already calling it a full-on trend as comedian Russell Brand, Marc Jacobs, and British GQ senior editor Jonathan Heath have been spotted in the skinniest of pants.  Heck, Russell can’t stop wearing his Sass & Bide ruched leggings made for ladies!

But is this new twist on the tight pant going to sit well with every Tom, Dick, and Harry?  When Marc Jacobs sent Kanye West a pair of the Louis Vuitton graffiti print leggings he’d been wearing, Kanye sported them as a scarf.  Apparently even couture courageous Kanye is afraid of a brotherhood of these traveling pants! But is the outrageous rapper a sign that meggings won’t cross the pond, or do you think they have a shot at becoming the next big thing in American menswear?

At least Skinny Jeans on guys give them some support. And gils wear leggings as pants, but there is a big anatomical difference here: I do NOT want to see random hipster guys junk swingin in their new fashionable meggings. What ever happened to those innocent days when pants were actually pants?

Hehh, Russell Brand is hilarious. He can wear whatever he wants, however I do think his hair makes him more insane than the pants.

No self respecting man (Brand excluded) should wear something like that.

No man I have ever dated in my life would wear pants like that. Not even skinny jeans. Actually, my boyfriends in high school wore JNCOs and Kikwears (and so did I). Aah those were the good old days. Can someone please tell me what the hell happened?!

@Chelle: I blame the ecomony. You can make two pairs of skinny jeans with the same amount of demin in a pair of JNCOs.

(Awesome giant pants reference though. I haven’t heard about JNCOs in years. I didn’t wear them but I definitely remember them. Mom and Pops controlled the back to school budget when they were popular and I wore Arizonas from JCPennys.)

Yeah, it is kind of a Brit thing, like the vinyl micro-mini of yore, which did finally make its way over, as will this trend.

Kinda dig the man-rouching on the legs. Maybe it’ on the nether-regions too, for comfort and support (ours).

I freakin’ love Russell Brand. That’s just his signature style. No other self respecting man should wear them though. It makes me want to gag when I see chubby teen age boys holding their head sideways to keep their oh so stylish side swept bangs from getting in their eyes, and skinny jeans made for girls. I mean really? It’s stupid looking so stop wearing them!

My man wouldn’t wear them but my friend Ed’s boyfriend would…

I’m sorry, there just isn’t any way a man can cram all of his dangly bits into those and expect them to stay in place.  Unflattering!

Leggings for men is not a new trend - one that’s been around for years. As someone who sells leggings to men and women around the globe at UnJeansDotCom - I know people are wearing and enjoying them.
It’s time to get over the body image constraints and go for the comfort. Just wear them. Leggings are perfect casual wear for women AND men. Having worn leggings for years, I’m aware of people’s comments both negative and very positive. After all, it’s not the leggings on the man but the man in the leggings. Everyone looks good in leggings and some people look great!
If more people, women and men, wear leggings then it will just be another apparel choice. At one time denim jeans were worn only by miners digging for gold. Now they are everywhere and nobody asks whether you’ve struck gold.
So never say never - when you do decide to wear leggings, choose a well made pair - not with cotton fibers that bag out over time but a high tech fiber that retains its shape. Go for the comfort and support. Leggings that go to the ankle look better than capri style that chop the leg. Plus the full length leggings support you from your ankle to your waist and give you an energetic lift.
