Who Was Your Childhood Celebrity Crush?

Comments (42)
Bookmark and Share

Of course I thought Johnny Depp was dreamy in “21 Jump Street.” But my childhood crush didn’t turn truly psycho until I saw “Edward Scissorhands.” How did I express my obsession with Johnny? In a totally sane way. I tried to become him. One afternoon when I was home alone, I stole my mom’s manicure kit and taped the different implements to my hands to see what it would feel like to have real scissorhands. Crazy crush behavior or early indicator that I might have goth tendencies in my future? Either way ... mortifying.

Inevitably, childhood celeb crushes are only good for one thing: They make you do very embarrassing things. Take, for example, this young lady, Melissa Bell, who may end up in therapy as an adult after she discovers that it might not have been the best idea to read her crush story, “Ashton Kutcher Fan Fiction: The Middle School Dance,” aloud to her school. Poor girl. [BuzzFeed]

Just to make sure that Melissa and I are not alone in our shame, I asked the other ladies at The Frisky to share their most humiliating celebrity crush moments. Some stories you won’t want to miss after the jump.

“I LOOOVED Taylor Hanson. I mean, LOVED. I had a Hanson poster on the back of my bedroom door and all their CDs and even their documentary. In middle school, I wrote the lyrics to a song I thought they could sing and mailed it to the executive producer at a record company listed on the back of one of one of their CDs. Sadly, I never heard back. But in my fantasy, they would want to sing the song and somehow this would lead to them wanting to work more with me, and I’d get adopted as their sister and live with them in Tulsa. Not that I wanted to be their sister, I just wanted to be closer to Taylor.” —Jessica

“I had a huge boner for Axl Rose. I tried to have a yard sale to raise enough money to get a Guns N Roses ticket ... and yes, I heart Chinese Democracy. My love is unconditional, obvs.” —Simcha

“I loved Joaquin Phoenix back when he was Leaf Phoenix and starred in ‘Parenthood.’ There was something so sweetly vulnerable about him that made me swoon-so-silly. Then he became Joaquin and got too weird for me.” —Wendy

“I was in looooove with Tyson Beckford. I had more than 40 of his Ralph Lauren ads plastered on my bedroom walls. I went to see him at Bloomingdale’s once. I was the first in line, but when my friend, who is tall and model-esque, approached the table he started to make googly eyes at her and said, ‘Hey, Slim!’ I knew I wasn’t his type and my dream crush was crushed.” —Annika

“It was all about David Bowie for me. I always used to listen to his records (they belonged to my parents), but then when I saw him as the sexy goblin king in ‘Labyrinth’ that huge bulge in his tights totally sealed the deal.” —Erin

“I was obsessed with Simon LeBon of Duran Duran. He was the reason I got into astrology in the first place! I used to spend my lunch hours in junior high trying to contact members of Duran Duran’s family. I got copies of their birth certificates in some magazine and then used the addresses to try to get connected. As you can tell, I didn’t really have so many friends in junior high.” —Kiki

“My first celebrity crush was Wil Weaton who played Wesley Crush on ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation.’ Yes, I was a massive nerd. I sent him multiple fan letters and eventually I got a form postcard back in the mail. It was a photo of him dressed entirely in Batman regalia —hat, t-shirt, AND his denim jacket was COVERED in Batman buttons. This did not stop my crush.

But my second celebrity crush was Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam. He once lived in the same city as I did, so I decided I would find the house he lived in so I could drive by all the time. I did find SOME house that I thought he could have lived in, conveniently only a few blocks from mine, and I used to make my mom do drive-bys. What did I expect to see? A ghost? So effing weird.” —Amelia

“Mine was Davy Jones from the Monkees. When he went solo, I begged my dad to drive me three hours to see him in concert. Afterwards, I made him wait by the stage for more than an hour because I thought, naturally, Davy would come out and say hello. When he didn’t, I burst into tears.” —Kate

I won’t kid myself. Johnny Depp was my dream guy way-back-when… and he still kinda is. What’s great is that I actually watched Edward Scissor Hands last weekend for the seven millionth time, and he is STILL just as dreamy in that leather body suit. Someone explain to me why he was never Batman. That would have been HOT.

Holy crap on a stick Amelia. Really? Wil Weaton? Seriously? That has got to be the oddest crush I’ve ever heard, and I am a total geek.

My geeky crush, because it would be wrong to condemn you then provide nothing in return would be Slave Leia *swoon*.

mine was definitely taylor hanson….i had their posters plastered over my wall too, jessica!  i had their documentary, all their CDs, posters and milk ads galore, the “unofficial” biography, the book of sheet music…

...i wrote fan fiction too.  oh god.  luckily, i kept it private.  i was also a frequent member of the hanson website.  hansonchat anyone?

the worst part was that my brother embarassed me in front of my real high-school crush.  i was in my bro’s room, and natch, he didn’t want me there.  so he screamed, why don’t you go listen to hanson?  and needless to say, i cried.  (in high school).  haha.

***

now i have a “healthy” obsession with jason mraz.

My first celebrity crush was Eddie Cibrian—he was on a soap opera, Sunset Beach, and I watched it everyday for a few summers just to see him.  On the show, he got his girlfriend’s mom pregnant, but that didn’t bother me.
I also had a huuuuge thing for the three attractive members of 98 degrees (Nick, Drew, and Jeff).  My sister and I had a gigantic 98 degrees collage, a bunch of t-shirts, and like 8 biographies.  We used to try to get on a show on MTV called “Fanatic” to meet them, but it didn’t work out.  Jessica Simpson was on Fanatic once, and when Nick made a cameo appearance, my sister and I cried.

My girlfriends and I all had a crush on different members of Duran Duran. Horny as we were, as virgins we had no idea how to express our lust for them.  So we’d shove pictures of the guys down our pants while listening to “Hungry Like the Wolf.” We knew our desire for them was heating up that part of our bodies, but we weren’t smart enough to figure out there might be better ways to smother the flame.

Pretty damn embarrassing.  I think I’ll send a message to my old girlfriends on Facebook just to remind them!

Noah Hathaway from the Neverending Story!! I wasn’t even born when the movie came out but I saw it when I was probably 7 and it was the early 90’s…I loooooved Noah Hathaway! I still do actually, I saw some child star special and he’s looking good and doing very well.

I had SEVERAL crushes but the biggest were:
- Edward Furlong: This is going to sound weird, but him and I are about the same age, so it’s okay… Sexiest role for a teenage boy EVER
- JTT: I used to rehearse my red carpet speech every night because of course, him and I were going to get married and I needed to be prepared for reporters questions.
- Tom Cruise: Don’t knock it.  He was dreamy in Top Gun and you know it.  I still melt during the scene where he puts on his aviators and smiles all toothy-like.
And the award for biggest crush goes to:
- Brad Pitt: Any confusion I had about my sexuality was resolved the moment that I saw him tilt his cowboy hat and walk away in Thelma & Louise.  I have never wanted to be a pair of Wranglers so much in my life.  He is the only one on the list who I still have to change my panties for.  I think I’m gonna go home and watch Se7en tonight.  Or Interview w/ a Vampire.  Hell, even 12 Monkeys does it for me.

@ cheese:  “Playing, playing with the boys…After chasing sunsets one of life’s simple joys is playing with the boys!!”  In my defense, I was like 9 when I first saw it and didn’t catch on to the homo-erotic blatancy of that scene.  Hmmm, I wonder if Kenny Loggins is secretly gay?  Highway to the Danger Zone?  C’mon!!

I, too, loved Hanson…but not as much as my three best friends. They started a band (none of them could play instruments), one girl hand a permanent little braid in her hair like Taylor’s, and one night they all sneaked out of their houses with their bikes in an attempted to run away to Tulsa to be with them. Unfortunately they were busted before they could get out on the road.

When I was, oh I don’t know, 4 or 5, I was was a huge Star Wars fan and was IN LOVE with Luke Skywalker. (Didn’t know who the hell Mark Hamill was. Pretty sure I didn’t even know the name. It was Luke I was in love with.) Partly I wanted to marry him, and partly I wanted to BE him. I remember trying to get myself to dream that I was holding a light saber by positioning my hands appropriately, but the only way it ever influenced my dreams was once I dreamed I was holding a bucket of water. *sigh*

Now I realize that he was a whiny brat and not so attractive (compared to Han…), but… well… I was young.

From about the time I was eight to thirteen, I thought that Tim Curry was the hottest man alive. My dad thought it was so funny that he would have his friends ask me about what sort of boys I liked. Naturally, they’d start teasing me about N’Sync and The Backstreet Boys. When I’d stick my tongue out and tell them how wrong they were, they’d always turn to my dad and go “Yeah. You weren’t kidding when you said she wasn’t like the other girls.”

It’s amazing how much that statement has followed me through my life.

My very first celebrity crush was on Niel Patrick Harris when He played Doogie Howser (sp?). My mom tells me that when I was like 3 or 4 she found a picture of him in a magazine and she cut it out, framed it, and hung it above my bed and every night before I went to bed, I had to stand up on my bed (on my tippy toes of course) and kiss him goodnight. red face

After that, my tween crush was Lance Bass from N*Sync, but that was mostly because in the 5th grade you *had* to pick between N*Sync and Backstreet Boys (just as you had to pick between being a Gator or Seminole fan) so I just picked the one that I thought annoyed me less (and to this day, I still find Backstreet *far* more nauseating than N*Sync). But of course, once you found yourself in the appropriate band clique, you had to pick a member to marry, and I always thought Lance was the cutest.

apparently I had a thing for gay guys. *sigh*

Heh, crushes? I had a few. Most notably:
-JTT: I saw him in Home Improvement, but loved him in Man of the House because he was in it more. And I could rent it!

-Joe Lando: Yeah, that guy Sully from Dr. Quinn. Or, at least, before his balls were cut off when he got married to Michaela. We all know who wore the pants in that relationship.

-Leonardo DiCaprio: Well, c’mon! Duh.

And Taylor from Hanson, Devon Sawa (that scene from Now & Then??), and whoever else graced the covers of Bop. But those three, those were the top hitters. Sigh. That devotion was BRUTAL.

(Kevin was my favorite from BSB… never much liked AJ or Howie. I loved Kevin’s voice.) I still listen to them, too, but only some of their songs. Mostly BSB. Too bad Kevin left…

I had a taste for distinguished older gentlemen, even as a child. I was a HUGE fan of Val Kilmer…HUGE. He was actually honorary King of Bacchus last year and my friend and I made a sign that said “I’m Your Huckleberry Val” but he was in the can when the float passed us. He waddled down off his thrown like a latter-day Elvis…all puffy and full of sandwiches and pills. Saddest. Day. Ever.

I had a harry potter poster that I used to kiss every night before I went to bed. One night my mom caught me doing it and I still haven’t heard the end of it.

Oh and then years later, I saw that picture of him naked in Equus, two words, no thanks.
