What’s The Lamest Beauty Tip You’ve Ever Heard?

bad beauty tips

For all the totally useful beauty pearls of wisdom out there, there are also plenty of foolish pieces of advice. For example, no matter how many people swear by it, we’ll never put urine on our zits (!?), and matching our toe and finger nail polish shades isn’t something we’ve ever been remotely interested in. Beauty expert Courtney Dunlop alerted us to some of the so-called beauty “rules” she thinks are particularly ridic, after the jump!

  • Don’t grow your hair longer than your shoulder blades: “It’s rules like this that brainwash women into thinking they have to cut their hair into frumpy mom ‘dos the day they turn 28. Not cool.”
  • Don’t put foundation on your entire face; just blend it on the areas where you need it: “But if you’re wearing foundation at all it’s because you want coverage, and if you don’t put it everywhere won’t you have weird patches of perfect skin surrounded by uneven, splotchy skin? If you want to spot-cover a zit or something, do it with concealer.”
  • Play up your eyes or your lips, but not both: “This rule became popular as a backlash to the makeup-crazy ‘80s, but now it’s just as dated as the frosty blue eyeshadow/bubblegum pink lipstick combo it shuns. No, you don’t want to bust out a full-on smoky eye and bright red lipstick, but it is possible to do pretty washes of color on the eyes and the lips without looking like a hooker.”

See more here. What’s the worst beauty tip you ever heard? Besides that one about putting Vaseline on your teeth? Bonus points for actually following said advice!

Ok so I have done the body lotion straight from the shower thing and all this accomplishes is getting the inside of my robe all icky and requiring IMMEDIATE laundering.  lol

I read somewhere that blasting your chest with ice cold water makes them perky all day. I think it was in Cosmo and it was a quote from Vanna White.

I do the lotion thing and it seems to work for me.  I’ve tried mashing an avocado, mixing it with a egg, and olive oil and using it as conditioner….how fun picking bits of egg and avocado out of my hair for 2 days!

The lotioning just out of the shower thing works great for me…Of course, robes and I have NOTHING to do with each other. I towel-dry, put on lotion, let it sink in, then put on my clothes…

Lotioning right out of the shower is so gross to me. Even if I walk around naked while it sinks in, I just still don’t like how my skin feels for like an hour.

And toothpaste on a zit - I tried that a zillion times in high school and it never worked at all. I just looked like an idiot.

And…mayonnaise and a deep conditioner. All it did was make my hair look GROSS for like two weeks, no matter how much I shampooed.

“Cutting your hair makes it grow faster.”

No. Cutting your hair makes it shorter. Getting regular trims to cut away dead ends makes your hair look nice, but it does not make your hair grow faster. kjbfgajdhg;es!!!

I’ve heard the toothpaste on acne thing too, but I’m like if it were that easy then why are Acne companies making so much money?

Then I’ve heard lemon juice or bleach to lighten your hair….NO I have not tried it.

I think that’s it really. Not too bad.

My mother always used to warm up her eyeliner with the flame from a lighter… one attempt, a glob of melted eyeliner on my face, and I gave up that one.

The lotion thing works for me if I towel dry, then lotion, then clothes. actually, if I don’t put on lotion right out of the shower, my shin feels all tight and painful. The worst “beauty” tip I ever got was the toothpaste on the zip one, all it does is make me smell like a tic-tac. Use a spot treatment for goodness sake!

Olive oil as a leave-in hair conditioner. Left me with lank, greasy hair for nearly a week until it all finally washed out.

“Smash an avocado and use it as a face mask.” Not only is this the dumbest beauty tip I’ve ever heard, it’s a crime against guacamole.  I imagine the whole time it was on my face I’d be trying to dig into my face with tortilla chips, and cry when I had to wash the green deliciousness off. On the plus side, I wouldn’t be able to resist drinking a few Margaritas while it did its magic;-)

@prgirl: Are you saying it doesn’t work, or that you would rather eat the avocado? You can’t really say it’s dumb unless you’ve tried it and it didn’t do anything for you.

I always put lotion on after I shower and haven’t had a problem. I seem to remember advice that you should put the lotion on without drying off first, and that seems like it’d be a mess. I always towel dry before applying lotion.

Yeah I know lots of people who put on lotion right out of the shower, it only works if you’re still wet, your slin should be slighty damp, not wet!

I’m guilty of the mayo and eggs as a conditioner, they really just weigh your hair down, so does honey, I’ve tried that too. Another bad one is oatmeal as a facial mask, it’s doesn’t work and you might end up with a weird film left over on your face usless you use a facial cleanser right afterwards.

The lotion thing works just fine for me…it’s never been a mess, and I’ve never noticed a gross feeling.  I just towel-dry, use lotion, and then get dressed maybe a minute later.  Perhaps it depends on the type of lotion you’re using - or how much.

I read that putting vinegar in your hair would get rid of any product build-up and bring out the highlights and shine.  It DID look really goo.  However, no matter how much I rinsed, washed or conditioned it over the next three days, I smelled like a salad.  A rank, nasty, vaguely feminine hygiene product-based salad.

@elizabethmarley; What is meant by that tip, is that trimming it often prevents breakage, making it appear to grow faster. It grows at the same speed, but since pieces aren’t breaking off the ends, it gets longer than if you didn’t trim it.

@ equnsuocha - I have a space heater in my bedroom/bathroom and it is the BEST for the mornings. I can sit in front of it naked and get dry and stay toasty at the same time.

I heard strawberries can whiten teeth (at the time it came with evidence). I used to mash up strawberries and put them on my freshly brushed teeth while reading or watching tv. i didn’t see a difference but it left a nice taste in my mouth.

as for trimming your hair, as it grows it will break. the split hairs will have the appearance in growth but it’s really dead hair and will continue breaking at the spot or higher in the strand until you get rid of the dead part. otherwise you get thin, weak long hair.

I was only 6 years old…...but someone told my friend and I that if you put a babies wet diaper on your face on April Fool’s Day it would take away your freckles (kids use to call me Freckle Face Strawberry!)....we were so excited and of course totally believed it…..and DID it…...now that the freckles have faded from my face if someone said that if I did the same thing my freckles would come back…..I probably would be up first thing on April 1st looking for a diaper!

My mom use to rinse my hair with vinegar to make it shiny…...but just a little vinegar in a glass diluted with water…....I still do it a couple times a month and it works great, and doesn’t leave you smelling like a salad when you use straight vinegar (and I always use apple vinegar)!

Toothpaste on a zit doesn’t work, but Queen Helene mud masks are great as a nighttime spot treatment. Proactiv absolutely rocks. i think I was one of their first customers and i still swear by the stuff.

I dry off and then put my body butter on right away, and wait for a few minutes to dress or put on a robe.

And for someone who thinks they won’t put urine on their face- read your lotion ingredients- if it says urea- guess what that is?

For the record, toothpaste doesn’t heal breakouts. But it does help minimize the appearance of them. I always thought it was a lifesaver when I needed to look nice for a picture or date or whatever. Toothpaste shrinks the zit and takes out a lot of the red so it’s less noticeable. You do have to leave it on for a while (30 to 60 minutes or more depending on your skin) But if you want the pimple totally gone, you’d best look elsewhere.

Oh and the stupid beauty advice I’ve heard is, “Don’t pencil your brows because it looks fake.”

On the contrary, I think about 80 percent of women overpluck their eyebrows and would look a lot better if they added a little color and definition courtesy of a pencil or even some eye shadow with a brush.

My face looks totally washed out unless I enhance my brows just a little with some dark brown pencil and smudge it in. If I use too much or go out of the lines, I just wipe it off with tissue.

My brows aren’t that overplucked, it’s just that the natural color isn’t deep enough to frame my eyes and make them pop.

I think every woman needs to try enhancing their eyebrows.

Now it does look bad if the eyebrows are totally gone (either plucked to nonexistence or shaved off) to draw them back with a pencil!! I agree there!

Another black lady who has a natural afro like mine said “Put baby powder on your scalp to prevent it from getting super oily”
I did it> I looked like I was trying to make pancakes with my head! :( It didn’t do anything but leave a chalky residue for 3 days in my puff..and I smelled like a baby.

I tried the toothpaste on zits thing several times in high school…never really worked, yet for some reason I kept doing it. I’ve also tried putting eye drops on zits to make redness go away; again, didn’t do jack.

@ meg: I had a teacher in high school who only had a small bit of natural eyebrows, then penciled in the rest. I always thought it looked weird!
