What’s Been Your Recession Splurge?
We’ve already mentioned how sales of lipstick and home hair dye have been on the rise since the beginning of the recession, and now the Telegraph U.K. is reporting that “racy underwear” is selling at a record rate, too — at least in England.
Popular department store, Debenhams, reports that sales of “fishnet stockings are up 83 per cent, suspenders by 50 per cent and basques by 45 per cent. Garters are also up by 71 per cent and cleavage-boosting bras up 61 per cent.” Traditionally, Christmas is the peak time for lingerie sales, but this year, sales have only increased since the holidays. Lingerie designer Aliza Reger says: “Everyone knows staying in is the new going out and what better way to survive the crunch and keep spirits high than with nights or days at home filled with romance. New underwear is a sensible investment and an inexpensive way to treat yourself, and your partner.”
I’m more of a wine girl than a lingerie girl myself, and have been spending my money accordingly. Rather than heading out for pricey happy hours, I’ve been staying in a lot more, saving money by buying $10 bottles of red instead of $10 glasses of the good stuff. What have been some of your inexpensive recession splurges?

I *wish* I had an inexpensive splurge. I spent $400 at J.Crew on jeans, a cardigan, a handbag and heels. Groooaaan.

LOL I would love to have you girls’ lives in fancy big cities and cool careers… HOWEVER, Oklahoma has been pretty recession-proof and I haven’t really had to cut down on any spending *knock on wood*

Nail polish. Sinful Colors run about 2 bucks each at Walgreens and I change my nail color at least every other day. It’s a sickness.

Yeah, I’m with @shannac02 on not having been hit too hard personally(though AZ is taking a nosedive). I’m pretty frugal to begin with, but when I looked at my budget a year or so ago, I wrote in regular (~every 6weeks) haircuts now that I’m rocking shorter hair, something I normally wouldn’t bother with. And any time I find fabulous jewelry that is actually affordable, I get it. And I got a new phone the other day - FINALLY, but that’s an every two years purchase, so it’s very much a splurge in the sense that I don’t do it very often.

While I’m still a Sephora regular, I’ve started LOVING the beauty section at CVS. My recession inexpensive splurges is looking for the “buy one get on 50% off” or “buy one get one free” on whatever cosmetics brand is on sale and going to town on mascara, lipgloss and lipsticks! I can have a new tube of mascara every week or two! So long flakiness and clumps!

Sushi! I LOVE going out with the boy and getting a big plate of sushi and a bottle of sake and just talking for two hours. It makes me feel better, always! I can make some sushi at home, but I just love splurging and going out once in a while!

Target. I haven’t been to the mall in MONTHS. I go crazy in that store.

Pre-recession, I started saving up for a birthstone ring. It was going to be a custom piece that was paid for by all these little side jobs that I do freelance outside of work. When the recession hit, I managed my funds well and kept my secret ring stash. Two months ago I walked into a jewelry store and ordered the ring. Because the store was really hurting for business now, I was treated like royalty. Totally fun, even though they thought I was crazy for buying jewelry in a recession!

Oh lingerie, definitely. I’ve been dropping dollars on garters and sexy costumes lately like it’s my job. The boy and I certainly stay in more these days, so it helps keep things pretty exciting. Also: perfume. I never, ever wear cheap perfume.

I have been leaving the car at home and taking the bus to work. Aside from saving money due to the rising gas prices - again - it feels good to be saving the planet from some nauseous fumes and such.
Unfortunately, this has lead me to splurge on a few things lately such as larger handbags to hold all the essentials that usually ride on the car (book, waterbottle, hairspray…). Plus, I have been hitting the shoe sales more often since it seems I am wearing them out with the added walking.
