What To Wear Now (And Later): Bubble Shorts
Along with harem pants, bubble shorts (also known as balloon, puff, and in some extreme cases, bloomer shorts) emerged as a major spring/summer trend. Circus pants, you say? Anne of Green Gables calling? Enough of that, and hear out our defense:
- As a summer item, bubble shorts are going on sale to make room for the fall merch, so you’ll find some good deals on designer versions (check out some picks after the jump).
- They are a bit of a statement item, but easily lend a sort of Chloe Sevigny-esque sensibility to an outfit (if you’re into that).
- A pair will make your legs look thinner. Believe us, we’ve witnessed the magic firsthand. However, these shorts might not be for the butt-conscious.
- Best of all, they’ll take you into fall. For a chic Parisian look, pair them with plum tights and a nice, suede booties. With a set of thick enough tights, they could even take you through winter.
Click through to see some choices, then you tell us if you’re feeling bubble shorts (errmmm, borts?)!
- Double bonus: Cute pleating make these Elizabeth & James shorts super smart, and they’re on sale. [$73.50, Shopbop.com]
- Alex Lane offers a range of colors including this pretty dusty rose. [$50, Shopbop.com]
- Covetable brand Opening Ceremony gives its elastic bloomers a higher waist, which begs for a cute shirt tucked in look. [$169.40, Lagarconne.com]

First Harem pants, now these mutant formal shorts? Why is reason number one for both: “because they’re on sale?” Lots of things go on sale, but usually because no one wants them, they are defective or are about to expire. I think all three apply here.
They make your legs look thinner because they make your hips look like they are growing some sort of fungus and these garbage bag-esque bloomers are helping provide a nice, dark, roomy habitat for it.
ANNNNND shorts with tights during winter? Isn’t that a bit like socks with sandals? Just because you can do it doesn’t mean you should.

ugh. I saw a pair of these shorts at Target yesterday and tried them on for kicks. They were SUPER comfy, but they looked horrible. IF these trainwrecks of the fashion world made my legs look thinner as ya’ll claim, I was so distracted by how ugly and unflattering they were that I didn’t notice.

No, no, no. Bubble dresses were bad enough. Don’t let it extend into other articles of clothing.

I also saw a pair of these at American Apparel yesterday. I don’t think I’d ever rock them, but I did see an uber-skinny woman wearing a pair and they looked great. I applaud anyone who can turn what seems like a fashion don’t into a fashion do.

The first statement said it all. Bubble Shorts- my new nightmare. And I take issue with the “major trend” label, designers might decide on it but i dont think its a trend until ive seen them in person at least a couple times. At Ive seen some ridiculous outfits recently, both good and bad- but these atrocities have stayed in hibernation. thank god.
