What Kind Of Beauty Changes Do You Make For Fall?

Fall Beauty

We’ve been pretty fall fashion crazy around here lately, and while nothing beats slipping into some thick wool tights and soft, chubby cardigans, it’s also the time of year when it might be a good idea to switch up your beauty regimen a smidge, too. A few ideas, after the jump!

  • Switch up your skincare routine: Chances are your skin is already getting drier and flakier, since your summer cleanser and light moisturizer (if you were using any) just isn’t cutting it anymore. Do keep exfoliating—you need to keep removing dead skin, but switch to a non-irritating, oil-based cleanser (try Shu Uemura Cleansing Beauty Oil, $32; it’s rad and a little goes a long way) and start using a creamier moisturizer. I love Eucerin Q10 Anti-Wrinkle Sensitive Skin Lotion SPF 15, $10, because it’s cheap, derms recommend it, and it has SPF. You’ll also probably want to start lubing up after the shower, too. Aveeno Skin Relief, $12 for a two-pack, is great because, again, it’s really affordable, but gets the job done.
  • Sort out your hair: In the summer we tend to let hair grow. All the sun and surf it was exposed to makes for a dull surface and plenty of split ends. Get a trim and, if you can afford it, ask for an added conditioning treatment. You can also do this at home by leaving in an extra rich conditioner like Alberto VO5 Daily Hair Recovery Deep Conditioning Treatment, $4, for an afternoon. Could be a fun time to start wearing your hair differently, too. Our Nina recently broke down how to use velcro curlers and a couple of us are intrigued.
  • Make subtle seasonal changes: A friend of mine dyes her eyebrows slightly darker for fall and insists that it enhances her skin and eye color. Why not? You could also ask for a gloss hair treatment in a darker, richer tone to enhance the color (and it’s usually a lot cheaper than a straight-up dye single-process), or start wearing a berry-colored lipstick to warm up your complexion. Nars Tamango, $24, is a gorgeous cabernet color that will look pretty with tweedy fall fabrics. Ditto for nails—classic red looks great right now, or try jewel-tones.

Do you do anything different, beauty-wise, for fall? Share tips, please!

No more self tanners.  But I tend to cut my hair more in the summer b/c its hot and humid and its less of a pain to deal with shorter.  Then it keeps my neck warm when its longer in the winter.  I’m not a fan of scarves or turtlenecks, they always make my neck itch.  I do also change my makeup shades a bit.  I wear neutral colors all year, but in the summer its more of a medium brown/pink/peachy neutral and in the winter more of a dark brown/deep berry/taupe neutral.  I also go a tad darker on the hair.  Try to make the skin/hair look as natural as possible, even though they obviously aren’t smile

I fill in my eyebrows darker and I wear deeper reds on my lips. Makes me feel like getting all bundled up and jumping in a big pile of leaves.

I tend to change my lipstick color to something more dark and I leave my hair down more as opposed to pulling it in a pony tail.  I throw some low-lights in too, since my hair is really light.

For some strange reason I do cut my hair once the seasons change, which is odd for WI since most people like to grow their hair when it gets cold, extra insulation, same reason I stop shaving my legs.  I’m not really a makeup person, so that stays about the same, but I do use ALOT of lip balm/moisturizer, cause once it gets cold, my lips just shrivel up and I got some big lips so the dry, cracking look is not good!

I’m the opposite with my hair, cutting more often or just shorter in the summer.  After nearly two years of chin-length hair, I’m considering growing my hair out a little bit as winter approaches.

I don’t change much. I tend to use a heavier hand with moisturizer and wear darker lip colors, but otherwise it’s business as usual.

I love love love Neutrogena Sesame Body Oil.
You can use it right out of the shower when skin
is still damp.  It’s smells awesome, you can even
skip perfume.  My man loves it and it makes your skin
super soft.
Check it out!

I’m a little more high-maintenance in fall/winter. I straight my hair more often because beachy waves can feel sort of out of place in the snow. And when it’s not so bright outside, I think you can get away with more makeup and/or need more makeup to get some color on your face.

I definitely moisturize a lot more. My moisturizers get heavier, I start asking BF to put some lotion on my back when I get out of the shower. I don’t really like lotioning my whole body so instead I get some Avon Skin So Soft bath oil and take a bath with that as often as I can.

I don’t do too much to change my routine for fall and winter. But I do swap my peachy blush for my Cover Girl cheekers blush in deep plum #154. I’ve got pale skin and love how fresh this looks when the weather’s cold and I’m more bundled up. Plus it’s my favorite smell in the whole world, call me weird, and I cannot wait to break it out every year as soon as the first frost hits us in Michigan.

I put my clothes in the dryer before I put them on and walk outside.

@Natalie W: Good tip!  Clothes are always so much cozier fresh out of the dryer.  I’ll have to try that.  I don’t really change the makeup or hair routine, but I do stop polishing my toes because I don’t wear open toed shoes once the cold weather hits.

Los Angeles: Sunny year round. *looks down at sandals and bright pink polish.*
I think I’m good on this one.

I deep condition my hair and go darker in color. For my face, I wear moisturizer and wear more browns/cabernets. And I love my bordeaux and chocolate brown shades of nail polish for fall. I pencil the brows a little darker, I guess. I wear lots more body lotion, because my skin gets really dry in the fall/winter. And I try to prevent my lips and skin from chapping, so I’m compulsive with the balm and body butters. Oh and since my face loses it’s sunkissed look somewhere between Sept. and Nov., I do wear some rosy blush and a hint of golden bronzer. And I usually swap out my light fruity summery fragrances (ones that smell of coconut, sunscreen or bananas) and go with something a little richer and sweeter, with notes like amber, apple, orchid, vanilla, fig, cedar, violet, rosemary, pomegranate, juniper or sandalwood.
