What From Your Closet Will You Pass Down To Your Daughter?

Sex and the City blue Manolo Blahnik shoes

In the December issue of Elle, cover girl Sarah Jessica Parker talks about becoming a mother (and loving the smell of diapers) and jokes that her two daughters, Marion (called Loretta) and Tabitha, will one day raid her closet: “The only tragedy would be if their feet are bigger than mine.” Having large feet would be unfortunate for the two girls, considering the number of beautiful designer shoes Parker has amassed as a result of playing “Sex and the City“‘s Carrie Bradshaw since the late ‘90s.

My personal shoe collection isn’t much, and I’m not sure future daughters of mine would be thrilled if I saved a battered pair of London Sole ballet flats for them. They would, however, have fun going through my jewelry box and piling on the diverse assortment of bangle bracelets I’ve collected—from fancy to 50-cent—along with tying the million and one scarves I own around their necks. What from your closet will you pass down to your daughters (real or hypothetical)?

I’ve already started stealing stuff from my mom’s closet. She spent some time in the Navy, and met and married (and had me) while stationed in Japan, so I have a VERY worn bathrobe, windbreaker, and hooded sweatshirt from the base she and my dad were stationed on.

She also remarried about four years ago, and for the ceremony, she and my stepdad insisted that everyone - even the pastor - wear Harley Davidson shirts to the small ceremony. I didn’t have one of my own, so I stole one of her spares, and she let me keep it.

It’s not haute couture, but I wouldn’t give up any of those things for anything!

Man, my mom has the “If you don’t use it in a year, throw it away” mentality. I have no idea what it means to inherit fun clothes. I poke at my mom about how I could have had all kinds of awesome vintage stuff, judging by her pictures from when she was in college, if she only could have been more of a pack rat.

My mom is a size 2. I’m a 10. So there’s no swapping or borrowing. And I pretty much donate all my old clothes to charity, so there’s nothing to pass down. Any children (if I decide to have any) will be left with a collection of worn out band tees from concerts I’ve been to along with bunch of ren faire costumes. I hope they like pirates…

If I had a daughter I would give her my family heirlooms.  Like my Grandfathers emerald ring from India, or my mothers jewelry.  But the cheep old boring tsirts probably arent worth saving.

My mother passed some of her jewelry, brooches and silk scarves down to me (most of her clothes and shoes from the 70s/80s she sold for food in grad school), and they are my most prized possessions. The 2 pieces of clothing I have of hers are both t-shirts but I love them—my favorite of the two is a blue, perfectly worn in and amazingly soft piece from her college graduation with a jumble of letters spelling out “Disorientation” If I ever have a daughter (or child for that matter), they will be inheriting my vintage burgundy velvet blazer, and the things my mother passed on to me, as long as she promises to share sometimes :D

I was fortunate enough to inherit gorgeous jewelry, custume and the real deal, from my grandmother and greatgrandmother. From my mom I’ll probably end up with a collection of hardly- or never-worn coats and shoes since she has quite a shopping fetish for these two items in particular. We wear the same size so it’s a bonus for me. As for my daughter, I read an article a while back saying that women in their thirties should begin purchasing investment items like designer bags and higher-end accessories. With that in mind I’ve made an effort to forgo the trendy $40 bags I am drawn to every month, and save up for better purchases down the road. So hopefully my little girl will get gorgeous heirloom jewelry, bags and shoes. With all this in mind she’ll probably be a major tomboy and be more interested in Converse sneakers. That will be fine, too.

If I ever have the opportunity I will pass down my Sweet 16 dress.  It was the one time in my life when I really felt beautiful and it wasnt when I wore it to my Sweet 16, I wore it again to my Jr Prom and it had to be taken in because I basically stopped eating after I saw my Sweet 16 pictures.  Yes I know it is ridiculous, I was an athletic 12 before and a bony 8 by the time of my Jr Prom, but for that night in that dress I was beautiful.  I still have it and remember it fondlty.

I’m just going to let them know tights are NOT pants.

I have a good amount of really interesting clothes - many are one of a kind.  One part about motherhood that I always thought would be so awesome is sharing those things with my daughter some day.  #1 on my list is probably this hand-made jumper I have that looks like an owl.  It is so weird and rad.  I hope my future daughter will some day rock it!

I’ve been lucky to have a similar experience with my Mama - she has some incredible hand-made things from my great great aunt, who was a designer/seamstress.  Most fit, even though my Mama is a bit shorter.

So I’m making my mom earrings on the condition that she has to leave them to me when she dies.

When it comes to passing down things from the closet I normally pass on jewelery and such. Or really that’s what has been passed down to me. Even though I’m a metalsmith, I almost never wear what I’ve made. I’m almost always wearing jewelery handed down to me from my grandmother. I actually hijacked a ring from my mom that an ex boyfriend gave her when they were in high school. I still don’t think she’s noticed.

my darling little late mother and i probably only wore the same size of clothes for a month during a growth spurt of mine.  but during that month we shared a FABulous pantsuit.  i did keep her wedding gown had it turned into a baptismal gown.

as for the classiness that i’ll be able to pass down; i usually keep clothes until they fray & need to be pitched.  but in my illustrious hobby in local theatre i’ve acquired some fun pieces.  a daughter of mine will end up with a way fun costume box.  smile
