Wearing Kids’ Clothes—Wrong Or Clever?

stella mccartney gap kids collection

So, turns out adults have been chasing after Stella McCartney‘s new Gap Kids collection. Maybe it was Grazia magazine who put the idea into people’s heads that they could wear the line after its staffers put a video online of them trying on looks from the collection (and yes, the skinny ladies did fit into some of the styles that weren’t even the largest ones). Watch it here after the jump…

In any case, it would seem that the most popular item in the range—a Michael Jackson/military-inspired coat—has definitely been finding its way into the closets of grown-ups. Racked reports that in New York City, only one large size remains (although it’s surely gone by now). Is shopping the kids’ section: A) A clever and cheaper way to find some fun pieces, B) Upsetting because the only people who can wear it have to be super petite, or C) Sad because apparently the only really awesome designer collaborations out there are for the prepubescent set? Meh, I’m short. I have and will again, bought children’s clothes and worn them proudly. Why cause I’m short and they fit. Which most clothes for y’all Amazon’s don’t. This neither shocks, horrifies or gives me pause. It’s just normal. I need clothes like everyone else.

I’ve shopped in children’s sections before for tops. And I’m by no means petite (5’8”, 155lbs, athletic). Sometimes you just happen to find something cute, and there are always more sweater vests in the little boys’ department than anywhere else. smile

It’s kind of gross that the Grazia website says, above the video, “pieces (and sizes) your average adult woman can fit into.” That woman is not the size of an “average adult woman.”
I do shop in the boys’ section sometimes, and I have a great tweed coat from the girls’ section at Target. There’s nothing at all wrong with that—kids clothes are cheaper and often just as cute/almost exactly the same as the stuff in the juniors, petite, and woman’s section.

a. i work at a branch of the aforementioned and we are constantly heading over to the kids section for cute, cheap priced items. fun fact: women’s shoe size 8 = kids shoes size 6. this is mostly ideal for those super cute, faux leather boots that no one would know were actually kids items.
b. you don’t have to be super petite to fit in gap kids. i wear a xs/s in gap adult, m in almost any other store and can fit in a l/xl (depends on the sleeve length) in the kids section.
i will definitely be browsing later this week.

I have several pieces of clothing from boys’ and girls’ sizes. Certain pieces won’t fit if you have a chest (and I didn’t when I was thinner) but skirts are always a good bet, or larger boys shirts for “boyfriend” looks because mens’ sizes are usually too big for me even in smalls. Girls tops I can usually wear a large or extra large even now with a 34DD, but I’m also fairly narrow. And definitely not petite, I’m 5’7’‘. I’d say it’s worth checking out at a few different stores to see what you can find.

For those of us too short/small to wear clothing from Express, the Limited, Gap, etc, attractive kid’s clothing is a lifesaver. Many of my friends and I have to buy clothing from kid’s or adolescent retailers, which is incredibly frustrating and leads to long discussions about who has jeans that don’t have sequins and butterflies on them.

The pieces are cute, but who would shell out 78$ for sweater leggings for a kid. I totally would have holes in both knees after wearing them a few time.. b/c it was always necessary to slide to base in kickball.
This collection aside.. I have purchased kids clothes at the gap, esp when I needed polo shirts for work.

i know i shop in the kids’ section because i’m petite, so girls’ size jeans usually fit me better (i.e. i don’t have to cuff them so my pants won’t drag all over the ground when i walk)

I’m not a big fan of some of the styles represented by women’s clothing; the shirts are usually thinner and have less wear in them. So I hit the Boy’s and Men’s sections for tops often.  Plus it’s way cheaper on my poor-college-student budget.

While the woman in the video could squeeze into kids sizes, it didn’t look like any of it fit her all that well.

I got an adorable jean jacket from the kids section at target for about $5! If it fits, why not?

@Kiki: Definitely! My daughter and I are now able to shop in our own and each other’s departments. Cheaper and more flexible.

I found the perfect skinny jeans from old Navy in the Girls section.  Its not weird if they look age appropriate.

you don’t have to be super small to wear kids clothes. I’m 5’9 and a size 4/6 in Big Girl clothes and a 16 in Little Girls (okay, so I’m obviously not fat, but I’m not petite either) and have been wearing them for years—especially cardigans or sweaters which are intended to be longer on the kid. Also skirts—if it’s intended to be a little above knee length on a child, it’ll make a cute (and insanely cheap) mini. JC Penneys has a good collection too, and their child sizes go up to 18 1/2

I work at a children’s shoe store and I have tons of moms that buy shoes in our store.  This past spring we carried some awesome Nike Shox in a kids 7 (which is a womens 9) and I got them for around $45!

As someone who is extremely petite, I love buying kids’ clothing. It’s rare to find anything else that fits and most of the styles are just smaller versions of adult fashions. From my shoes up, almost everything I have was purchases from a kid’s section (the bra has to be special ordered, grr).

I do, however, disagree with the “needs to be super petite” statement; I know a lot of “average” women who can wear 14/16 in girls, no problem. There’s a lot more overlap than one would think.

A.  But tell me, am I the only one who tries and tries and tries to love Stella Mc and just can’t forgive her drab palette and very simplistic styling?
