Victoria Rowell Explains Her Obama Gown At The 2009 Emmys
If Victoria Rowell had worn her Obama gown to the Emmy Awards last year, it probably wouldn’t have been so shocking because a lot of celebs were showing their support for Barack Obama‘s presidential campaign at that time. But she donned a dress with his face all over it at a time when most people are still trying to figure out whether it’s appropriate to still wear their Obama paraphernalia now that he’s president. Victoria said she was trying to make a statement and she certainly did, but I think her reasoning was lost in the shock value. She told Essence.com that health care reform was her motive for wearing the gown ...
“[Sunday], the opportunity presented itself. Lights, camera, and no health care action? Setting the ruffles and caviar dreams aside is but a meager gesture to echo the herculean efforts of a health care reform package long overdue and one which President Obama is introducing for all Americans. I spent 18 years in foster care, enduring inadequate health and dental care and unforgivably turned away more than once at a doctor’s office. Nationally, 25,000 foster youth annually emancipate from foster care without health coverage. I emerged from Washington, D.C. Health and Human Services as a proud American citizen—an advocate not a victim.”
Victoria serves as the National Spokesperson for Casey Family Services/Annie E. Casey Foundation and a National Angel in Adoption.
What do you think of her statement dress and the meaning behind it?

I think she answers the question, “Can you bring the crazy, exploit the President, and wear an incredibly ugly dress to a formal event at the same time?” with a resounding, “Yes, we can!” There have to be better ways to draw attention to supporting health care reform without being tacky at best and detrimental to the cause at worst.

Is this dress ugly? Yes! But I appreciate Ms. Rowell’s ability to take a celebration of the the vapid and transform it into a conversation about the things that really matter. Cheers!

Yes, this is an issue that she should be bringing up but she did it in a completely backwards fashion. It looks like she is attempting to exploit her “connections” to President Obama so as to gain larger recognition for herself by wearing such a dress. It just draws a negative light to something that we need. It gives the bill’s detractors something to poke fun at, rather than herself vocalizing her opinions on the plan. The dress doesn’t even appear to make any allusion to the plan, but looks more like crazed Obama paraphenalia.

Yeah, I mean it’s great that she wants to bring attention to health care, it’s something we all should be concerned about, but this was just a tacky attempt to try and do that. This dress look like it’s left over campaign wear or something, why not wear a dress that had something about health care reform on there? I mean this is just showing support for the President, which is great, but don;t make it seem like you where trying to get a message about an issue across, because it failed and the dress failed. There is just no good excuse to be so generic.

@cbass8: That was my first thought yesterday when I saw this pic on another site. Also….where in the fresh hell do you find a frock quite like that, let alone that crazy ass Obama/Zodiac fabric?!

She’s Canadian. My mom used to be friends with her. That explains the whole damn thing. Obama has a higher approval rating here than God.

Or, if she is not Canadian, she has definitely spent a significant amount of time in Toronto hair salons;)

The Emmys disappointed me. 7 nominees for best series, at not one was Battlestar Galactica!
