Urine Luck! Scientists Envision Pee-Powered Cars

urine can be used for power

Pee: it’s not just for toilets anymore! Scientists at Ohio University say urine from humans and animals can be used to make hydrogen, which creates the hydrogen gas used in fuels when an electric current is sent through it. The power of pee could hypothetically be used to get 90 miles to the gallon on a car and the pee from one cow could create enough energy to heat water for 19 homes, the scientists say. No word yet on how expensive or smelly it might be. But, hey, whatever works to be green, man. [NY Daily News]

I was reading the linked article, preparing to reply with something pithy (heh heh). Then I read this:

Historically, Stickney notes, urea is made into fertilizer, which is not the only way cow urine is used. In India, a soft drink made with bovine urine was recently under development and that country’s leading Hindu cultural group hoped to market it as a “healthy” alternative to traditional soft drinks.

I… well, I’m not really in the mood to reply any more.

Actually… this is the first alt fuel idea that makes sense to me. As beer-drinking Americans, we have 100& assurance of an unlimited supply and can be exported in abundance. There are so many “pull up to the pump”-type jokes to be told here… let ‘em rip…

I’ll finally be able to justify a late-night run to Wendy’s for one of their immense 42 oz soft drinks without worrying about pissing my money away on gas.

This article is out of context. It’s urea, which is a substance in piss which somehow makes hydrogen easier to separate from water. It’s been the running joke in the auto industry for a couple months now.

^ What!? Out of context! Poo.

@Retro Chi: I meant it’s the idling joke in the auto industry, rather than the running joke.

^ Hee-hee. I saw the word “running” at first and knew there was a trough of possibilities, but I dared not go there. Better left to the experts.

ps: I guess that makes you Chi-plural, n’est ce pas? Let’s say “Ohm” together… [your kind, or mine]

^The only ohm I’m familiar with is regarding electrical resistance, so I’m kind of adrift regarding your ps.

^ You are not adrift – thought you were playin, me playin’ back, (alright, alright, too remote and tic). My “ohm” refers to “chanting” in response to your Retro “Chi” above. Chi, another word for energy movement, not dissimilar to your scientific “ohm.” And Chi-plural = Cheese. Of course, your Chi to me may have been a simple typo – hmm, I hadn’t considered that… O-well. It actually was a typo, I forgot the last c.
