“True Blood” Recap: Erik Cries. A Lot.

Yesterday I enjoyed three of the things I missed the most while I was in Costa Rica (to be honest, the list isn’t much longer than that)—my dog Lucca, a big ol’ breakfast burrito from my favorite brunch joint, and “True Blood.” I caught up on last week’s episode first (Annika did a killer recap), which should have been called “Hoytsica & The Never-Ending Hymen.” Jessica is eternally a virgin! How awesomely strange is that?! Last night’s episode was just as thrilling—Hoyt continued to prove that he’s the most evolved man in all of Bon Temps, Mary Ann continued to spread her black-eyed craziness in her hunt for Sam, Jason “Action” Stackhouse kicked Preacher Steve’s ass, and Lafayette proved that gay men in eyeliner aren’t to be f**ked with. Sookie continued to be a pain in the ass (though she had one good line, telling Jason to use his brain instead of “letting it take up space in your skull”), Bill was a little less wimpy than usual, and Erik continued to dominate, tricking Sookie into drinking his blood, resulting in her having sexual fantasies about him.

You wouldn’t expect it, but “True Blood” has become a bit of a tearjerker. When Godric decided that his vampire existence must come to an end and stood in the sun, evaporating into a burning vortex with the help of totally ‘80s special effects, I welled up. I didn’t, however, blubber as much as Erik, whose mourning for his maker was positively heartbreaking. It’s a good thing we got to see his naked vampire viking ass in the flesh, because otherwise, he might have lost some manly points for that display. Clip above!

Awesome, thanks for the spoiler-laden title.

I think Sookie is so disloyal. Last season she dissed Bill and went to Sam, only to leave Sam for Bill. Now she’s all smitten with Erik and poor Bill can’t do anything about it. Sure, I know Erik’s blood has a hold on her, but shouldn’t a higher-functioning human being like Sookie be able to resist some of his advances?

Thanks for ruining it for me. I wasn’t able to catch it last night, but now there’s no need to watch. SMH. You could have at least put “True Blood RECAP” or something in the title.

@MissChaotic - Glad someone else thought it was a stupid idea to name it that way initially. smile

@Annika—who could resist Erik?  All kidding aside, no, she shouldn’t be able to resist Erik.  He’s a 1000 year old warrier, he knows how to get what he wants, has learned the art of manipulation—she isn’t SUPPOSED to be able to resist him in her 20 something years of experience.

That said, the Erik crying scene was the best way to hit home to her that Erik has retained some bit of humanity—the same trait she admires most in Bill.

While the story isn’t following the books exactly as close as I would like, the same emotions are being emitted.  It will be interesting to see what they do with Sookie and Bill considering how it has been written.

Thanks for the spoiler in the headline.  That really sucked, pun intended.

@Annika - While I do agree that Sookie ditching Bill for Sam last season was a bit of a tramp move, but how is she ‘all-smitten’ with Erik? I mean yeah she had that dream, but that was her subconscious and could not be helped and can solely be blamed to the effect of his blood in her system. Kind of like unsettling dreams when one’s sick or under the influence. Upon wakening and later when she was with Erik she didn’t show any attraction towards him besides maybe empathy.
But having said that I don’t doubt that they will later spin this sookie-erik thing outta control.

Argh. FINE. I changed the headline. I’m sorry. I was really into my rhyme. And I typically am of the belief that if you miss a show when it’s on, you should stick your head in the sand until you have a chance to watch it.

@Amelia - I can understand ppl’s frustration but it’s not like you gave EVERYTHING away..there’s still a lot of hidden surprises in the ep..but future spoiler warnings are appreciated.

For a show that aired less than 24 hours ago, spoiler warnings are commonplace.  I don’t go see a movie and then tell everyone the ending that didn’t see it opening night.

Next week, I’ll cancel my internet and call-in sick to work so that you can write all the spoilers you want.

The youtube caption title still is massively spoiler-ish.  Just saying.

On a more related note, Eric was a HOT mess this episode!  I thought it was a little overdone at times.

LOVED this episode.  Finally we get to see in the show how insanely complicated Erik is in the book.  More naked Erik!!!  Godric’s story line was great, so was the actor.  I totally choked up when he sobbed.  I believe Sookie was not unmoved.  Bill is like all first loves: intense, passionate and completely ill-suited.  Sookie has to grow up and out and away from Bill sometime.

@the spoilers-everyone calm down.

Actually, I believe the etiquette is - you don’t spoil the West Coast showing. The next day?  It’s public domain.

I loved this episode. I thought Skarsgard rocked the house. Eric is somehow both complicated and predictable. I love that about him. Plus, well, Skars’ butt. wink

When will Sookie wise up that part of her attraction to Bill was also blood related? She liked him before the blood in Ep 2 last year, but it really amped up after.

@cbass8 - Hop on any movie/tv series discussion board and lead with a spoiler.  It isn’t the end of the world by any means; but it is annoying to those that purposely avoid boards and read it somewhere else which didn’t previously post spoiler-worthy titles.

Everyone is allowed an over-reaction once in a while.  I’ve used mine.

@Riley lol, I’ve had a few of my own today. It’s Monday.

I hear you about tv/movie discussion boards - but I classify them differently in my head I guess. Go to EW, WSJ or other blogs and you’ll see spoilers. Just sayin’. grin

The YouTube caption is “Godric Dies”. I don’t even have HBO and am like 8 episodes behind. I avoid your weekly review like the plague b/c I don’t wanna spoil myself. This made it…well, impossible.

I’m still firmly Team Bill, but this scene made me want to give Erik a hug (and then some), so maybe he’ll win me over little by little ...

@earthgoddess- stay away from the books if you’re Team Bill.  They’ll turn ya.  If you are, however, Team Hot Men then read away!!

Hey!  I’ve been Team Erik since day one.  I get him first.  Then the rest of you can have him.

@mrsmccoy07: Thanks for the tip! smile

I’ve only read the first book so far since I know each book is one season. Once season 2 is over, I’ll read book 2 and so on. A friend of mine has almost spoiled a few things for me, and I know that things look grim for my Vampire Bill, so I guess I’ll have to wait and see if Erik can sway me ... I’m sure he can, too ... he’s yummy! I just have a soft spot for Bill, I guess. I think it’s kinda like Buffy/Angel (Sookie/Bill) and Buffy/Spike (Sookie/Erik) ... I enjoyed Buffy/Spike, but I adored Buffy/Angel.

Wow ... it’s been a long time since I loved a show this much! This and Mad Men make Sundays awesome! smile

@slestie—True Blood is based on the Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire Series by Charlaine Harris.  The first book in the series is called “Dead until Dark” and there are nine total, with ten to be released next May.

win. Thank you.
are they “adult” books? My younger sisters read a lot of books about vampires that are written for 14 year olds that are pretty lame.

then again, just watch the episodes, right?
that was kind of a dumb question, but I won’t delete it for posterity’s sake.
