Trendspotting: Fashion Spandex?

Spandex shapewear doesn’t have such a great rep, previously making appearances in bad ‘80s music videos and being the culprit behind embarrassing hookup moments. But things might be turning around. DKNY is about to give the oh-so-trendy Spanx a run for its money by launching a new line of tummy-tucking underwear that is meant to be a bit cooler, thanks to neon pink and blue colors. Grazia has pointed out that maybe there’s a trend beginning here, since the presentation of Topshop‘s “Unique” collection was filled with workout-like looks—sports bra-like bandeau tops were paired with Spandex biker shorts under jean shorts.
Think you could rock this as a biker-cute look? Or do the granny panties belong out of sight? [Grazia, Topshop]

I love spandex, I am completely guilty of wearing cotton/spandex pants to work. lol. I just like to be comfortable! Last time some guy told me I looked like I was ready for my aerobics class, but my second job is being a messenger so I just blame it on that. I’m running around all over!

I personally think that workout clothing has no place outside of the gym. If you’re going to the gym and stop somewhere, sure ok, but otherwise ew. I even hate running shoes unless you’re running. Spandex isn’t made for everybody and if it’s under your clothes, for concealing fat or for the winter to keep you warm (I grew up in Utah and used to do that) that’s fine but otherwise it’s a no go. It’s ugly and tacky. The 80’s were a terribly scary time for fashion, why are designers trying to bring the ugly back? Keep it in the past! Unless they’re afraid to come up with new ideas and better ways to make everyone look great, because lord knows not everyone looks great in spandex.
