Trend Watch: Pregnant Brides On The Rise
A lot of brides have already got something old, something borrowed, and something blue, but now they’ve really got something new—baby bumps! According to the Daily Mail U.K., there was a sudden rise in maternity bridal dress sales to satisfy the estimated 20,000 brides in Britain who were with child on their big day last year. That number accounts for a record 10% of women under 45 who are tying the knot for the first time! Here in the States, one in six brides is preggers—just like Jennifer Garner and Jessica Alba when they married their spouses. And these gals are not just waddling down the aisle on their wedding day wearing a muumuu; they’re going for traditional white gowns with big price tags.
Mara Urshel, the owner of the infamous New York bridal superstore, Kleinfeld’s, says designers are excited to style maternity clothes and have even popularized cuts that suit that full-bellied figure. “There’s a lot of ‘empire waist lines’ being shown,” she’s noticed. In the U.K., Tiffany London, owner of the store Tiffany Rose, has watched sales for maternity bridal gowns double to 100,000 between 2007 and 2008. Her fellow Brit, Tracey Wilkinson of Expectant Brides, claims she sees a steady 40 brides per week in the summer. Oh baby! All the maternity bridal fashionistas cashing in credit a change in social mores for the bonus to their bottom line. Or as Ms. Wilkinson puts it, “A few years ago you’d have struggled to find a white maternity wedding dress. Now, you can find one easily—and people are much less embarrassed about wearing one.” Hey, it’s always a nice day for a white wedding! [Daily Mail U.K. and CBS]

Wish they had this when *I* walked down the aisle preggers six years ago….all I had for an option was the gown I was married in which I hated—hated so much I cried every time I looked at it—and dresses by maternity stores, which LOOKED like maternity dresses.

This isnt really that surprising to me since more and more couples are already living together before they get married so condoms and birth control after often left out. A friend of a friend was already planning to get married to his girlfriend, but when she found out she was pregnant they seriously did some crazy shot gun wedding in like 3 weeks because either she didnt want to be giantly pregnant at her wedding or because she didnt want her child to be a bastard. Lol.Either way it was way lame and stressful for my friend.

pipi - I don’t know anyone who just decided to stop taking bc after moving in with an SO - do you really see a lot of people doing that? Hopefully most people don’t ... doesn’t really make sense to stop bc just because you move in if you were already using it - unless you’re planning on having a kid. Maybe my circle of friends are all just paranoid about getting knocked up like I am. *shrug*

Pregnant women are so hot! I think this is awesome. I have a friend who’s wife was pregnant when they got married and they both did everything they could do to hide that fact, which is such a shame. They would have gotten married anyway, just the coming of the baby changed their time table a bit.

When my sister got married at city hall recently, with her baby in tow, I tried to convince her to breast-feed while taking her vows, for that extra classy picture. If I only quoted this article and the trendy statistics—she is an Aries after all and they love just being ahead of the trend. Plus, post baby, you lose the bump and have the boobs. Some people are just NO FUN!
