Trend Watch: Moms Gone Wild!

Moms Night Out

It’s Jennifer Saunders’ (aka the boozer mom, Edina, from “Absolutely Fabulous”) birthday. And what better way to celebrate her then by visiting MomsWhoDrinkAndSwear.com? Yes, that is an actual website that recommends Capri Sun as a mixer. There’s also Mommy Wants Vodka, Why Mom Drinks Rum and June Cleaver After A Six-Pack with the clever tagline, “Warning…Alcohol Can Lead To Pregnancy.” These internet communities have been supporting party girl mommies who feel the need to still get a little wild in order to maintain their sense of self. These forums run by proud mamas offer honest parenting advice with manifestos like, “It’s almost summer and if you are like me, you are dreading the long days trying to keep the kids from killing each other. Beer can help with this task. I recommend it.” So much for sneaking mother’s little helpers, these broads are openly downing drinks. And it’s not just how, it’s where!

The days of “Mad Men”-esque dinner parties with social martini sippers are over. Jello molds have been replaced with jello shots and no one seems to be shy about it. MILF’s are the new Girls Gone Wild. Just take a look at photos of moms getting crunk in da club and tossing back boozey blow job shots that have been posted to the Facebook group Moms Who Sometimes Need To Go Out With Girlfriends & Drink Secret Society! According to its founder, Audrey Silver, the site started in 2008, and went from 10,000 to 200,000 page members in three months. Clearly, the secret is out and there’s evidence on the internet we hope none of their kids find.

Wait a second, is this trend really clever mom reverse psychology on binge drinking? Are they trying to ruin something their kids think is cool, like when my mom got into Alanis Morrisette? (Although, maybe I should thank her for spoiling that one for me.) And will there be total role reversal where kids be forced to worry that their moms are going to stay out too late partying and be shamed by their mama’s drunken Facebook photos? Perhaps. At least, we’re willing to bet the new popularity of drunken MNOs (mom’s night out) will make coming up with “yo momma” jokes that much easier. Bonus!

my wife works in sales for products w/mid-6 to 7-fig prices (no, not real estate) so she gets PLENTY of opportunities to wine/dine w/o the kids (or me) & get PAID for it (just did last night)...

Here, here. I think some mommies would be a lot happier if they took time to enjoy themselves instead of self-sacrificing for the kiddies and hubby all the time.

Just, you know, be careful if you’re still breastfeeding.

I belong to one of the groups mentioned above.  Honestly, if it wasn’t for those ladies, I don’t know how I would have kept my sanity some days.  Raising kids is hard and any mother who tells you different is flat-out lying.  Having a place to go and let off steam is just wonderful.  And not being judged for saying that you wish you had your tubes tied sooner is even better!

I can say with absolute certainty we drink less than we claim.  If we drank as much as we said we did, we’d all have been arrested for child abuse/neglect long ago.

If you’re looking for the “typical mommy” that have given everything over to the children—we’re not it.  We do an AWEFUL lot for our kids.  We love our children to death and recognize them for the miracles that they are.  We just are also realistic enought to know that sometimes, to keep from blowing, we need some space.  And maybe a few glasses of wine.

@writergirl - this is my ‘cheers’ing my coffee to you.

And please don’t be shy about telling young/new moms about this - my best friend kept calling her desire to get away from adorablebaby and bf for a few days “selfish” ... I did my best to convince her that preventing burnout and keeping yourself happy/healthy/sane is anything BUT selfish, but I’m not sure if she was able to let go of the guilt.

LOL! Really? We moms need a Web site and special night out for that? Add “Baby Margaritas” and “Kamakaze Chillers” to the list when my daughter was little. And never, never, never would Jello or Capri Sun be found anywhere *near* my drink, *nor* my daughter’s lunch box, for that matter. I have a great time all the time with my mom/nonmom friends, and my daughter… anywhere. Life and fun is what you make it.

ps: I wouldn’t turn down a MadMan martini party, either. Wanted: Don Draper, straight up and dirty. Mmmm

@joyy—thanks!

And no, it is not selfish when mom needs a break!  I think it makes us better mothers because we can deal with the kids without blowing on them.  My mother, I think would have been a MUCH better mother if she had been “Selfish”.  She wouldn’t have laid the guilt on either about “how I do everything for you.”  SO yes, spread the word.

@retro chic—No Capri Sun drinks here, either.  I guess in a pinch if you were depserate for something to mix the vodka with…well, then….maybe but not on my list.

I’ll just stick to my magnum of Pinot Grigio, thanks.

Nobody says anything when Dad staggers in Friday night and sits at the breakfast table Saturday morning blowing a 2.5 blood content. Let the ladies have a few.
