Asians Are Stepping Up Their Love Of Black Culture By Getting Perms

Harajuku girls and boys’ love of Black culture has seeped in their beauty routines. Behold the Asian Afro, also known as the “reverse perm.” It is catching on amongst Asians, especially Japanese and Koreans. The process uses a chemical cream to transform traditionally straight, silky Asian hair into tightly-coiled curls which are extremely similar in look and texture to African American hair. Ironically perms are equally popular in Black culture too, except the result is the opposite: it makes hair bone straight. I think the “Asian Afros” look really cool, what do you think? Let me know in the comments section! [Honey.Brown.Sugar]

The Asian Afros do look awesome.

I’ve always wanted an Afro but, being a very, very white girl, I always thought it would make me look kind of stupid.

I love it! I’ve always loved afros—although I don’t think people with light colored hair pull them off well. I’m sure some people will think the Asians that sport this look are not being true to their natural selves, but I say if it makes you happy, DO IT (pun intended)

My friend’s dad is Chinese and he did this back in the 70s! When we were twelve we were looking through an old photo album and saw a picture of her dad back in his college days and laughed so hard we were crying! I guess he’s the one who’s laughing now.

When I was in Japan, there were selling tee shirts that say, “I love black people” at la fouret, a cute shopping center in the middle of harajuku and in korea, they have floors of department stores just for hip-hop clothing.

I remember when I was a wee little girl seeing an article in Ebony magazine that talked about Asian culture (I think it was Japanese people) that liked R & B and the soul culture and they were sporting Afros. It was a strange sight to see, I assumed the people were wearing wigs.

LOL @ Kiki T. Y’know, the thing about this global melting pot we have now is that there really is no need to put race labels on anything anymore. Modern-day culture belongs to all of us. I love rock music more than any other genre, but I doubt I would buy a shirt that says “I love white people,” for making it, even though there may be some truth to it. LOL

I think the hair style looks awesome! I’ve always been jealous of people who can naturally have a fro. Are there any pictures of people with light hair having them? I’m blonde and I’d probably never have the guts to do it, but it would be neat to see what it looks like.
