Topshop Or Not To Shop? We Say Not.

America’s first Topshop, opened in Soho last week. Supermodel Kate Moss showed up for the opening of this super-hyped British boutique and hundreds of die-hard shoppers lined the streets.  Is this Britastic clothing empire really worth all the fuss? We took Topshop for a test shop. Keep on clicking. [NYPost]

aw I loved topshop in London…everything seemed so cheap and most of the pieces were of the “everything goes together” variety. too bad it didn’t translate.. :(

I’ve been to several Top Shops throughout the UK and I can say that pretty much everything mentioned here was true.
The worst was how busy it was. No matter what day of the week it was, you could barely move. I have never experienced such crowded stores in my life. Also, everything seems to be quite expensive. It seems like a lot of the clothes are marketed towards teens and twenty-somethings and not many of us in that age group can throw down $200 on a pair of shoes. But, I did buy some really cute undies there smile.

I was excited about Topshop, but now I’m just scared. I think I’ll make a trip at some point, though.

i went there the other day and it was suck a$$...if I had to go to a store like that, I’d just go to h&m;, less crowded, cheaper and basically the same kind of stuff

Being from the UK, Topshop is always a place I think I should go, but always end up leaving massively disappointed. The clothes rarely fit me properly and aren’t very well made and are far too expensive (even with my student discount) for what they are. At most, I’d buy pants (as in undies!) and basic t-shirts, the odd bag and the occasional bits of jewellery, but mostly I think it’s just really trying far too hard and coasting on a reputation.

while it is pretty expensive, i went there a couple nights ago (i live pretty close though) and there was a short line to get in because it’s still new and novel. once inside, it wasn’t that crowded at all. i thought many of the shoes were originally designed. i loved alot of the clothes, but couldn’t afford any. i bought a necklace and a pair of earrings. i’m a little scared to wear the earrings cause they’re big, but they’re pretty. i didn’t think it was as bad as described here.

I think that part of the problem is that you’re expecting US prices - relative to other UK shops, Topshop is on the cheaper end of things. Clothes are more expensive in Britain, and since Topshop is importing the same clothes to America, they’re going to pass those prices on.

For a start Topshop isn’t the Uk’s H&M;because we have that too. I find it hideously overpriced at times with things such as t-shirts. However we do get a 10% discount for students which is pretty awesome. It’s okay for dresses but I don’t ever buy anything that isn’t in the Christmas sale, then you can get £100 worth of clothes for £20!

I went to Topshop to do a review for my blog as well this Thursday. No line when I went in but by the time I left it was around the block. The one nice thing I guess about crowd control is the fact that while inside shopping, the store didn’t feel the least bit crowded. The music though is AWFUL and far too loud. It reminds me of an edgier Zara than anything else (definitely not in the same ranks as H&M;). Similar fabrics and price points. I feel though overall that Topshop is just overrated.

On a related note, did they ask you guys for a press pass when you took photos or was it so busy no one noticed? Just curious because while I was taking a couple photos with my iPhone, they stopped me and said no pictures allowed. I asked if it was the case even for the media and they said that I needed to show them my press pass. Aynwho, got the pics, but it left an unnecessarily pretentious taste in my mouth.
